Thanks Clive - and indeed a big shout-out to the Plymouth contingent.

Very balanced and fair minded Clive. 4 points at home in a week against two of the best coaches in the division is a good return and a million miles from what we would have achieved 6 weeks ago. It's great that it still wasn't good enough for the manager though.

Poll: Is time up for Ainsworth?

We’re not a good team when we are expected to have the ball, been like that for years now.

Dreadful decision to play Kakay and Kelman in that formation, set the scene for the game and we never got over it.

Mentioned after Hull about the joy of every player knowing what their job was and the perfect drop into formation out of possession. Perhaps that was easier for them against a side who wanted possession of the ball but still, was hard to believe the chaos it caused when we lost possession versus Plymouth.

Thought the ref was good. I’m not so bothered about the time wasting this season, thought it should be north of 6 minutes and he played 8.5 so no complaints.

Good support from the Plymouth fans, as per usual really. Hope we are able to meet again next season, preferably on a weekend afternoon and a near full house.

Great stuff, Clive. Amongst my own disappointment I had to pay credit to Plymouth, both team and fans, like you. Thought they played really well both with 11 and 10 and they had some proper fans in that away end.

Only bit I would disagree with is that I thought Dykes did fine. Perhaps only one of his headers was a decent chance, the rest were ones where he had to do all the work.

Whether you like him or think he is useless, you've got to add Dykes to the list of one-injury-away-from-disaster? I mean, Kelman and Armstrong? We really, really need him.

Have to disagree on the time wasting, Steve.
If you read Clive's referee piece before the game, you could have written the script.

He spoke to the keeper just after half time, kept watching him carefully, waving him on and pointing to his watch. If I remember correctly, he spoke to him again and then eventually gave him the virtually meaningless yellow in stoppage time.

Good stuff Clive, agree with all of that.

Was pleasantly surprised at the eight minutes of injury time (which Chef Jr. correctly called) but one of those where we could be still playing now and not score.

Good learnings for the manager, the fans, the players as this goat rodeo rumbles ever onwards.

We go again, etc.

Overall that looked worrying like one of many performances over the last year prior to MC where we rarely looked likely to score and as long as the opposition had 11 men we were extremely lucky not to concede. We created very few clear chances, but Willock still managed another great effort outside the area 1st half that went inches wide of the far post, whereas his goal against Hull went inches inside. Hopefully too perhaps it won't be every week we will have to play against a 10 man parked bus for a half or more of football.

Thought Dykes had a decent game, good hold up play and plenty of early runs in 1st Half to either receive the ball (as with that header just wide of near post) or create space, 2nd Half was a different game but an excellent near post run and flick for Cooks 'penalty appeal' and good movement to win headers but we didnt get to bye-line enough to create real goal-scoring opportunities. Kelman missed probably our best chance this season in turning that the wrong side of the far-post but I dont think anyone sees him in the match-day squad let alone starting XI.

Thought Dozzell was always passing sideways and EDB managed more forward passes when he came on, we really need a creative player in the middle of the park who can run and beat a man and either Colback and EDB should be starting in front of Dozzell for me.

Cook I'm still not totally buying, culpable as any in that shambolic first 15 minutes, still playing 'hospital' passes to Kakay and only really stepped up when they went down to 10 men and there was lots of space in front of him, exact same as Stoke game. Even looking at 2min highlights on 50 odd secs left Dunne to run past him and close-down their attacker running clean through on goal, still not seeing a team player or team leader there, hope I'm wrong.

Excellent report of the game and good to see a manager who is far from satisfied. When I saw the team selection and the way we played up to the sending off, I had visions that Ainsworth had returned, locked the Cifco Kid in a cupboard and delivered the team talk.

It was like we had lost by four on Saturday and Plymouth had won three on the bounce. There was I expecting us to go for the jugular at the start full of confidence at home and it was the total opposite! There are times when I feel nobody in our team can play to Dykes strengths which he must have somewhere in his game.

Plymouth have always had great support but then they also have Cornwall as a catchment area as well as Devon whereas we are surrounded by bigger London clubs. I have Pilgrims mates living in Bedford, Oxford, Basingstoke and California so they are sprinkled around and no doubt they have London based followers too to attend midweek games in the capital.

spot on Clive

as fair and balanced as Marti was post match, refreshing to listen to a a manager talk for that long an not just throw the usual cliches in.

Wow, so I do not rate Dykes and I think Cook is doing a decent job.....exactly the opposite to you

Dykes main job is ....to score goals - he fails to do that in most matches, he doesn't even get into many goalscoring positions and when he does he frequently fails. Wins headers when he should win headers and at his height I would expect him to win most duels.

Not a very good player at all and did very little against Plymouth.

Great report Clive, in full agreement with the ref, who I thought was very good (30 seconds more at the end should have been allowed considering he made Cook replace his boot when he was happy to let the game carry on as he did his laces). My one beef was not so much the goal kicks - you can add on time for that. It was how long he held the ball in his hands for. That I think should've been stamped on. But I also think we wouldn't have scored if we'd played another 98 minutes.

' I do wonder, when the memory of Ainsworth fades and the novelty of the new man wears off, whether our poor little loves will take kindly to the manager coming out after games and saying things like “we were dreadful”. '

Interesting point. I think he has their respect already, and speaking the truth, followed by positive comments I don't think will upturn the apple cart. I think and hope all of the players would stay the same about the first 20. With Critchley, he had done little to gain their respect before slagging them off and ignoring his own shortcomings in the gameplan at Cardiff and getting them ready for Fleetwood. As I've said before, I saw no lack of effort for Ainsworth: they just had no idea what they were supposed to be doing. Gues we'll see when we hit our first bad patch... which may have started for all we know!

Bare bones.

Great report, as ever, and very self-aware. Thank you.

Kakay may not be the best, but it looks to me like he just does enough to put off the Plymouth player who is clean through around 29 seconds into the highlights video. In real time, I couldn't work out how Argyle failed to score, it was such a good chance.

We didn't play well and that was the sort of game we often lose, so I'm not too upset.

We're certainly not out of the woods yet, though.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I actually think we looked more dangerous against 11 men than 10! Even in that period, when we did attack, I thought they looked very susceptible. It was after, when they had more discipline, that we really struggled.
I also don't think Plymouth were that great in the first 20: in fact, I'd say the opposite. They created little themselves, almost every chance was gifted, and their finishing and decision-making was, thankfully, woeful.

Bare bones.

Spot on Clive - If you don't win make sure you dont lose.

Same theory for Saturday just make sure you don't get beat.

Then we might just surprise Southampton before the Christmas break.

Good to call out the Plymouth travelling fans too - Great support from them.

I’m with anti on the 11v 11 . I actually thought we had weathered the storm somewhat when the sending off came . We certainly would have more chance getting in behind an offensive Argyle rather the than the ten we faced for over an hour.
Smyth should have been introduced earlier as he was the only prepared to run in behind them .
Overall , not a great performance but a clean sheet and well in touch of those above us now.

I think if we had got one, we would have got two, three, or four. They defended really well so to end up with a point and a clean sheet was, in my mind, a reasonable result.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end
