| 3 at the back with wing backs Saturday? 12:21 - Feb 26 with 829 views | thehat | The one (and only) thing we seem ok on now is centre backs so could this now be the time we get to see it on Saturday. I thought we switched to it for the last 15 minutes on Tuesday and it seemed to close some of the gaps. My thoughts are 3,5,2 when attacking 5,3,2 when defending: Walsh Dunne Cook Edwards/JCS (either can play on the left of the 3) Mbengue/Smyth (RWB) Saito/RND/Esquerdinha (LWB) Hayden/Varane/Morgan/Vale (3 from these 4 for midfield) Kone/Kolie/Bennie (2 from these 3 for up top) I think if we go 4,4,2 or 4,2,3,1 Sheff Utd will have a field day. | | | | |

So it would have to be Esq. Also have to consider whether Varane is ready to start Would it be a good idea to leave Walsh out - like they did after the Coventry thrashing earlier in the season? For me; Hamer Dunne Edwards Cook/JCS Mbengue Hayden Varane/Morgan Vale Esq Kone Kolli

I was also thinking this, especially if JCS is fit (!). That gives us two ball-players who could both do that Sheff Utd overlapping centrebacks (tm) thing. And since all of our wingers are injured (Chair, Smyth, Dembele, Poku) or out of form (Saito) it's easier not to play with any. That gives us: Kone Kolli Vale Hayden Varane Esq JCS Dunne Edwards Mbengue Walsh Bennie time shares with Kolli. Morgan comes on in the middle for legs if needed. Saito can come in if we need to change shape. Hopefully JCS and Vale as lefties can help Esq out. Dunne's there to win headers. Mbengue can get up and down.

I think moving Edwards into midfield is the most solid option overall, with Cook or (hold your ribs) Clarke-Salter back in beside Dunne. Edwards seemed to be getting a bit of practice in the other night, after the game was long gone of course. He was much further forward and getting lots of touches like Madsen would've been. Things are getting laughably threadbare but I think that could work as a sticking plaster for now.

Losing runners from set pieces, not stepping out to block shots, skewed clearances, poor shot-stopping - these are all basics of the game, not Southampton exploiting tactical gaps in our set up.

Esquerdinhas best moments have been attacking, his best position currently is probably wing back, the formation gives us a chance to play three in midfield which would be very useful now Madsens unavailable, it will be a tough game but I still think with some smart team selection we can cause them problems. Walsh had a mare (alongside the rest of them) and if we drop him then we might as well pay him up and let him go. I shudder to think what this would do to his confidence. Don't get me wrong, I'm to be convinced, but if he's perpetually one game away from being dropped, then it won't work. He needs some notion of belief in him, albeit if we've all got a question mark over him on here. I remain of the view that there was a keeper in there (may still be) but this lad's development has been atrocious by QPR. If we drop him for Saturday, then this will really be on us!

To be honest it was more like a back five. Adamson Mbengue Dunne Edwards Esquerdinha Saturday will be tough but it does feel a bit defeatist playing at home to set up like that.

That Warburton team never looked back for almost a calendar year with the loans in Jan helping. Aug- early Dec we were sublime to watch. BUT, yes all day long if you want to play football through the lines vs pumping it in the channels as we mostly do now
