Looks like Wigan are in trouble - money due to be were due to be paid by 2 June have still not materialised and 2 directors have resigned.
According to the article, they also own money to HMRC

I believe they've so far been deducted four points before the new season has started.
It's criminally wrong that people/players/anybody don't receive their wages on time, having said that when you look at the amount of cash swilling around the Prem.

I've thought for a while Wigan could be the next Bury. Maybe this new owner will spin it round, I hope for them that he does.
But what you have here is a club that when I was a kid up in Grimsby and Scunny they played in league games much like we occasionally play Yeovil or Rotherham in league games. Plucky little upstart having a moment. Non league ground, non league support, in a town built for rugby league with no interest for football.
You look at what happened at Gretna, and Rushden, and it's a club inflated and elevated half a dozen leagues or more over what it should be on the whim and cheque book of one bloke. And if that bloke loses interest, health, dies then you're fcked immediately. Dave Whelan took Wigan Athletic into a place they should never naturally be, and without him it's just one chancer after another paddling against maths.

I was looking at an old program from 35 years ago and it's amazing how little the top two divisions have changed in terms of team movement.
The only teams who are in an 'artificial ' position are probably Bourmouth and Brentford, everyone else is pretty much in the same place, namely bouncing between the Premier or Championship.
Makes me think the gap between the Championship and L1 and 2 is bigger than the Premier and Championship. No wonder teams like Wigan, Oldham and Scunthorpe get into trouble trying to compete. |  | | |

They definitely got there on their footballing performances Ted, but it was never sustainable. Just as Blackburn could not stay at the top of the pile without Jack Walker.
I would disagree with Clive that they are still above their natural position as they were always one of the top non league clubs in my lifetime. They earned the right to replace the likes of Bradford Park Avenue, Gateshead, Workington Town etc in the Football league.
Personally, I would say that League 1 is the "right" level for them & I do hope that the new owners are able to keep them afloat. | | | |

Clive - our owners have much deeper pockets compared to Whelan who had made £210M via his business.
Wouldn’t dispute your point on swimming against the tide but our owners can easily stay afloat (quite comfortably) give their wealth is in the £BN’s. Granted, if they eventually get fed-up and sell just to move us on we would certainly be sailing close to a Wigan scenario.
Having worked with investors in the Far-East they do tend to pay for their mistakes and generally play the long game. London is a huge draw and investment opportunity for them (they know that) and a football club allows you to enter that investment game a tad easier. |  | | |

until late 80s the bottom team in the old 4th division would face a vote by the other chairmen, if they go down or not and if the top non league side can go up, usually the league was northern dominated and most times they voted in favour of staying up, wigan got voted up and rose quickly thru the leagues.
wimbledon was another . they blocked enfiled town, when they had good cup runs and were decent. scandal later with chairman ruined em i think??
