About time we had one and it's got the word "official" in the title so that makes all the difference. If a mod wants to sticky it, feel free.
I seem to remember that five years ago (on the old, better Planet Swans) we got to nearly 100 pages and then another 60odd with the "aftermath" thread. They were good fun but there were more posters then and we were all a bit more tolerant of others' views. Let's try to be nice to each other, eh.
Anyway, best site for opinion polls is this one in my experience:

Polls are so tight the only conclusion is that the Tories and Labour are head to head nationwide. Can't put a whisker between them.
Tories need about 39-40% for an overall majority. Labour will probably get one on 36-37%. God bless our ridiculous voting system.
So, enjoy yourselves. I'll start with a prediction. Labour to win most seats but slightly fewer votes than the Tories and end up forming some kind of minority government with support from various parliamentary lefties on a vote by vote basis. And then all of a sudden many Tory supporters will discover that they've always hated first past the post and can't understand why we perpetuate a system under which the party which more people voted for than any other can lose the election. It'll be quite funny and lead to calls for a proper voting system. Which everyone will forget about in six months when all the fuss has died down.

these land of my father issues come up again and again people actually get angry when you suggest not to vote labour as they are not working for us. Thinking about it Mrs thatcher was probably a double agent shes certainly kept the labour party in.

Maybe. But I am more in the camp that the difference between red and blue in Government is substantive when it comes to the economy. There are ideological differences between the two which are big enough to have a real impact on the macro economy.
And the macro then has a massive impact on the micro.

Not a huge amount, no. Both of them in the main fiddle around the edges of an economic system they have no real control over. There are varying degrees of difference in philosophy about the best way to spend and raise money of course but little of real substance changes. But I'm no economist and now that I know what you do for a living I'm not about to argue the detail of this with you!
My problem with the current government is not so much their handling of the economy, they've actually done very little in that respect, it's how they've decided to raise the money to pay down the deficit by targeting those that are least likely to be in a position to absorb it. Easy targets, perpetuating negative stereotypes that the voters can't wait to buy into. Political bullying. | |

I can see Labour being far more willing to work with the greens as they pose no threat, whilst SNP and Plaid are direct rivals in Scotland and Wales.

The Greens will have one MP, max. So unless Labour finish one short of an overall majority that's a non-starter. Tories plus LibDems may not provide a majority this time either, Libs are going to lose about half their seats. | |

Why would it matter? If somehow Plaid scrambles together enough seats to be relevant ... They won't, sadly, as frankly Wales will need a voice while every sop goes to Scotland ... Then that is the source of their relevance not whether someone who can't vote for them thinks highly of them. |  |

The whole charade makes me want to donate all my bones to science and live in a bucket to be honest.
Why isn't anyone allowed to mention progressive tax increases and a fairer less divisive society without being labelled as the anti-christ? Why can't our aspiration model be Norway, where people are happy and conspicuous consumption is considered as peculiar anti social behaviour, instead of America where selfish greed and showing off is considered acceptable, nay, laudable. I suppose I'm just an ageing hippy. |  |

But everyone should own their own home mun, even if by selling off the limited stock that already exists it's just going to store up further problems for the future. What sort of basket case country wouldn't use this as the ultimate aspiration model? Who mentioned Germany?

It's not beyond the realms of possibility we'll end up with some form of Con/Lab/Lib ruling coalition if there has to be a second election. It's not that far-fetched, you can barely get a Rizla paper between them as it is, they are all just there to carry the coats of the multi-nationals anyway. | |
