Seeing that African countries seem to be basket cases with people looking to do anything to escape, I ask the question.

Were they better off under colonial rule

It would undoubtedly be better if African countries were drawn along tribal lines not colonial ones.

Should have been left to sort their own borders. Same goes for the Middle East.

Racialism in excelsis.

That's quite a curious stance for you to be taking given that you have been quite an outspoken opponent of that line of argument when it has been advanced on here in the past.

Straw man argument re South Korea.

The thread title was about colonialism. I suppose if you're bringing other countries into it there's an opportunity to post the 'interesting' amount of beheadings in Saudi Arabia, our beyond reproach allies

It took me 50 yrs to realise I might not be right all the time.

We all bullshite but look in the mirror and the truth, which is humpy, you're morphing into a very unpleasant poster unable to avoid unpleasantness.

You also misquote or simply ignore posts you can't answer to.

I d have a rest now leave this thread alone.

British colonialist did bad things but as regards India, for example, speak to an Indian and you lol find they respect us for introducing many things to their country they stlll adhere to.

For bad, read about Leopold the murderious pig of a Belgian king.

Perch starts a deliberately provocative thread and then screams victim when someone disagrees with him. Quelle surprise.

Some may. Others can't. They were murdered by us for wanting independence.

Whether I'm boring or not has got f*ck all to do with anything.

You read what I posted. Do you think it happened or not?

Now I know a fair bit about the events you're raising here, Hump, if you'd posed that question to me then I'd have no doubt whatsoever that they did, though how much direct culpability Britain had in reality is open to question? You could well argue that as the Colonial Administrators the buck stops with us. Did HM Forces turn a blind eye? In all probability it amounted to a bit more than that but the fact remains that these atrocities you're referencing were not undertaken by British soldiers but by Embu and Meru loyalist militias.

Kenya was a savage, messy business. The Kembu and Meru had suffered grievously by the predations of Mau Mau and "we" had let them off the leash.

Have times changed? Think on this: how much do you REALLY think the man in the street would care if ISIS terrorists were similarly treated? Forget all about the etiquette and parameters of decent behaviour, the public facade of propriety, deep-down how many do you think would be saying "good enough for them?" Be honest.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

People on this forum are still deluded in thinking that somehow we're the good guys. We're. F*cking. Not.

Good point.

Just like to add that we're. F*cking. Not. The bad guys either.

The fallacy of the superior virtue of the oppressed is an easy and popular seduction. But still a fallacy.

And those who believed it are starting to see just how cuddly certain cultures can be. Do they imagine this will get better or worse when they get more power which they surely will?

The British Empire will and does look RELATIVELY mild. There will always be empires it's entirely logical to prefer to live in your own.

It's human nature which is the real enemy of all people.

The orthodox are always orthodox, regardless of the orthodoxy.

Yeah. But let's acknowledge what we doing ourselves not very long ago. Of course, that's too hard for some people to stomach.

It's not to hard for people to stomach at all......all countries have done horrible things in their past history, lets acknowledge that fact and move on.
It's history book warriors that perpetuate hatred and terrorism....close the book mun, there's enough horrors happening in today's world to concern yourself with.

Sorry, but it's my new riposte to being arbitrarily mentioned unnecessarily by a certain poster when I deliberately haven't engaged with him. It's either that or argue back, which is entirely pointless and exactly what he's after.

I'll change the hymn to a less catchy one but only after this one is exhausted.

Which tribes were Eric Griffith-Jones and Sir Evelyn Baring members of Loh? As they were corresponding about Britain's torture practices in the detention camps Britain had set up? The British colonial tribe?

Many on here would support it Loh. I wouldn't myself. Call me a silly old liberal but I don't think female detainees should ever be raped with bottles of boiling water. Ever. Especially by a country that likes to call itself civilised. Tree hugging tw*t that I am.
