Lockdown loan signing fun 22:44 - Jan 19 with 1969 viewsRSCOSWORTH

After today’s loan signing it got me to thinking about the number of impressive loan signings we’ve had at the club over the last 20 years or so, although sadly not too many recently. So to lighten up this period of lockdown I thought we could list all the loan successes we’ve had over the years.

There are two rules to this, firstly they must have had a successful loan period with us and two you can only suggest one player per post and can’t suggest another one until someone else has posted.

I’ll kick things off with one of my personal favourites...Neil Danns.

Looking forward to remembering some favourites that I’m sure I’ve forgotten about.

Not sure if he would make it into the starting XI for the loans team, but a maybe a good impact sub. My next nominee is Hogan Ephraim signed on loan from West Ham in our 1st season in the Championship!

According to Col U Data:
Appearances: 21 (5 starts, 16 as sub)
Goals: 1

Goalkeeper - Tom McAlister had great influence in organising and managed the back four successfully which resulted in us not being relegated out the league a season before we eventually did, due to not having a experience keeper.

Shortest appearance probably Fumaca - crocked against City.

Played only part of the game, but would have been brilliant for the U's

I'm pretty certain Fumaca wasn't a loan

I'll add Andy Woodman as another goalkeeper. Great character, thrown into the side for an away trip at Reading and we pulled of a shock win and cleansheet.

...or conscious after 19 minutes!

You could well be right Daniel, so sorry Durham, might have to drop the interloper :-)

Wikipedia has him down as a loan, but I'm sure he was a free agent and signed for us on the basis that he was free to leave if a 'bigger team' wanted him

Chris Barker (RIP). A season long loan from Cardiff for our highest ranking season. Probably the most consistent and reliable loan player we've ever had.

Fumaca was a loan deal from Brazilian club Catuense
Though at only 14 minutes probably one of the shortest ever!!
My shout goes to Bongani Khumalo no-nonsense South African defender

I'm certain he was on loan. I watched the game on TV and he was taken out I believe by Morrison.

If you won't let me have him then Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

One of Parky's heroes at Yeovil.

Going back to 1974. Gary Moore, a striker we had on loan from Southend, scored 7 goals in 11 games at the end of the 1973-74 season, to help get us promoted.

Team list is shaping up nicely, we now more or less have all slots filled, plus some extras, and we have a decision to make on the sub 'keeper. Bongani is traditionally a centre back, but I've stuck him out on the right for now.

Colchester United Loanee First XI

Manager: Steve Foley

1….Goalkeeper: Sam Walker
2….Right Back: Bongani Khumalo(?)
3….Left Back: Luke Garbutt
4….Centre Back: Chris Barker
5….Centre Back: Matt Connolly
6….Central Midfield: Tony Kelly
7….Right Midfield/ Wing: Michail Antonio/ Jamal Campbell-Ryce
8….Central Midfield: Fumaca
9….Striker: Graham Barrett
10..Attacking Midfield/ Striker: Jamie Cureton
11..Left Midfield/ Wing: Isaiah Rankin
…………………………………………………………………………….
12..Sub Goalkeeper: Tom McAlister/ Andy Woodman
14..Sub Defender #1: Danny Batth
15..Sub Defender #2: David Coleman
16..Sub Midfield #1: Hogan Ephraim
17..Sub Midfield #2: Jacob Murphy
18..Sub Forward #1: Gary Moore
19..Sub Forward #2: Mike Masters

Left on the bus: Rowan Vine, Will Packwood, Rekeil Pyke
Treatment Room: Kevin Beattie
Taking an early bath: Guy Branston
Post-match entertainment at The Lamb: Roy McDonough

Edit: missed JCR, so another decision to make. Notably, he was eligible for and participated in both ours and Southend's open-top bus parades following promotion to the Championship.

Solid at the back and plenty of goals. I'd pay to watch this side.

A player who went onto better things than his loan to Colchester from Man City suggested was............

"Put your hands up, put your hands up........
Put your hands up, put your hands up for Matt Mills
He's from Man City"

I'd also pay to watch this side provided Humes & Ball are not in charge.

If season 2021-22 starts with that management combination still in situ, I might not renew my season ticket and revert to following Aston Villa, my childhood team.

Admittedly, every game then becomes an away game. But with Southend and Stevenage relegated, and with Cambridge promoted and Carlisle not, I reckon I would travel less than if following the U's home and away. I have also enjoyed following Villa on TV and Sky and BT Sport will still offer plenty of armchair opportunity. Cowling needs to wake up that lockdown is changing everything. It's time he made changes too, else lose some of the support base. I've not felt this way in 18 years, but can now understand why so many have drifted away ever since promotion from within became the practice. What comes next doesn't inspire me whilst Humes remains pulling the strings.

After his two goals for West Ham last night, making him their top Premier League goalscorer, Michail Antonio, to my mind, has been our best ever loan signing. We taught him well.

Don't think you'll have many arguments there. Certainly one of the best players I've ever seen play for the U's. He looked a class above when he was here and what he's gone on to achieve at West Ham is impressive.

What did you guys make of the loan signing of Tariqe Fosu from Reading?

Has gone on to play for Charlton and Oxford in League One and then won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League with Brentford.

Now rumoured to be going to Swansea in the Champ.

I personally thought he was very good. Another player who looked a class above from the first moment he played for us. He was pretty much the reason that we nearly made the play offs that season. Not surprised that he's gone on to do well at a higher level.

Deal fell through.

Quote from the website:

https://the72.co.uk/249123/brentford-man-tariqe-fosus-stance-on-swansea-city-mov

"There’s no indication as to why Fosu’s move to Swansea City fell through but given the amount of transfer dealings that Swansea had to finalise yesterday (mostly outgoings that is), bringing in Fosu seemed to take a backseat."
