Southampton At Leicester The Debacle
at 08:43 24 Apr 2024

I have tried to calm down before writing anything as last night I was so angry and frustrated with the manager, the team and the club. Last night epitomised what has been endemic and wrong in our club for some while - appointing the wrong manager for the club repeatedly, appointing players who do not care or are not that bothered about SFC.

Long before the game started, as early as Saturday evening all the noise and mood music coming out was that we were going into that game without intent to win. What sort of attitude was that and for all the possession there was no intent. No intent to attack, no intent to offer any real opposition. The goals were easy for Leicester (though had we been given such gifts I am not sure our attack would have put them away anyway).

How must those 3000 plus fans have felt last night and really what can we expect from our final 2 games? If the manager and the team can't be bothered why should we. I suppose today we'll get all the usual excuses and diatribe about how we must do better, etc, etc and how they must react. It's too late guys, you gave up, plain and simple and you have now made us look easy to beat. You look disinterested. Any of the other teams in the playoff positions will not fear us in the slightest. Those other teams may not have as good a players but they have something we don't - team spirit, togetherness, a never say die attitude - you saw that with Coventry on Sunday.

I could say it is all down to this manager and this group of players but the truth it isn't. Yes, they are to blame for what is happening now but this attitude, this stinking lack of fight has been there for several seasons now. Is it poor management recruitment or poor player recruitment or just plainly both. Whoever runs our club just keep making the same p*ss poor mistakes and errors of judgement.

We don't have a single player in our team who I would identify as leadership material. There is no mental or physical strength in our team. We go a goal behind and before you know it we are several goals behind. We miss one chance on goal, we miss several chances. We are weak in midfield and out of all our goalkeepers whether fit or otherwise I am hard pressed to say whether any of them are really upto the task.

Last night was dreadful and we have unravelled completely in the last few weeks especially away from home. But, it has been underlying and there for so long.

If I am honest, I did not expect to be in the playoffs this year so in that respect my expectations have been exceeded. But, what I did hope though is we would be building a real team that can form a foundation and platform. Those foundations were left bare last night and for all to see. We have a long way to go before we can say we are a good team and we are moving in the right direction.

Cardiff down to their barebones
at 11:41 20 Apr 2024

I mentioned this yesterday but in the past we have not come out at all well in these situations. Claims of an injury crisis have all too often resulted in a 1-0 defeat for us. But, as long as we have the right attitude etc then hopefully we will get the win we need.

Cardiff City supposed injury crisis. Can we not........
at 12:50 19 Apr 2024

........have any of that attitude that all we have to do is turn up because the opposition have an alleged injury crisis.

I have lost count over the years of opposition teams that are supposedly struggling to put together a team to play due to an injury crisis only for us to lose 1-0. I don't want us to care who is playing for Cardiff we have to play to win and win well if possible irrespective of who is in their squad.

Sorry but Russell must be either irrational or unprofessional or both
at 17:31 17 Apr 2024

There have been many times I have questioned RM's decisions but to be honest, I am basking in what was a good all round professional performance and outcome last night. Though there won't be a single fan that does not have a view on who should or shouldn't be picked I have to assume that the manager knows alot more about the players than I ever will and entrust that the decisions he makes will by and large be for the right reason(s).

From an outside perspective it does feel harsh on Lumley but I assume there is a good reason why RM felt he was not the man for the job on this particular occasion.

At the end of the day, I am not too bothered who plays if they perform like they did last night and get a good result. It is a team game and as a team they did what they had to do, albeit against a largely supine opposition. AM was largely a bystander last night and many of us regulars are aware of his frailties. If he is the (preferred) person between the sticks in the coming games he will undoubtedly be tested alot more. How he performs, whether it is good or bad will determine to some extent whether RM has made a sound or questionable decision - but that is what being a manager is all about and what they are paid for.

Brilliant Pat.

Thank god you don't have a Jack Stephens in your tank. I mean, where would he go and would he fit in with all the other fish and can you imagine the fall out if Nick found out that you were trying to fit him in at the expense of another fish?

Well, having had a thread about our fans leaving early, watch the Arsenal fans. About a 3rd of them left when Villa went ahead and even more when they got the second goal.

It irks me to be honest Nick, though it shouldn't as people pay their money and can do whatever they like but I just don't get it really. I can partly understand it if you are losing badly and there is no way of coming back but when games are so poised I do not get it. The other time I get it is an evening game and fans from the IoW may have limited time to get back.

I understand the point that getting out of Southampton is a nightmare but whenever I go to a game, wherever it may, I expect to be stuck in traffic on departure.

My favourite Saints player. Loved seeing him play. He always showed enthusiasm and just played. He and Keegan were great together but my favourite moment was his goal against Liverpool following several one touch passes - almost Total Football as it was known then.

Top 3 dropped points ...
at 22:27 10 Apr 2024

If only we had won on Saturday against a poor Blackburn or had not conceded late against Middlesbrough at home and those top 3 would be really looking over their shoulders. It is not impossible but I still think it is unlikely but obviously some nerves are setting in at the top. I think we were better last night but we were not convincing. We have Watford and Preston next and neither are going to be easy.

I agree. I think he has shown recently that he could be an asset if used properly. I just don't think he was getting long enough before to show it and that was effecting his confidence.

Southampton V Coventry Matchday Thread

I didn't see the game and could only go on what I was listening to and various other outlets. Pleased to see a win and it sounded like we had a reasonably good first half but faded and on the backfoot in the 2nd half. A win is a win and for that I/we should be grateful.

You need your Weetabix Pat.

I can think of a few supposed winnable games this season that we have failed to win and arguably easier than the ones we face in the next 3 games. Saturday looked like they had finished the season and were just going through the motions. Still, I like your positivity and belief in our manager and players to lift themselves.

Truly dire experience yesterday
at 13:29 7 Apr 2024

Thank you ericofarabia.

That final free kick summed us up. The final whistle was not far away and we get a free kick not that far out of the box and instead of launching it into the box we do a sideways move which gets closed down and we invariably give it away.

I don't know what KWP's role was yesterday. He was all over the place but not in his usual position. He looked p*ssed off and I would suggest our manager has done just that. RM has probably sealed his fate to leave our club.

Rothwell. He is no longer a footballer. He cannot play - he is overweight, unfit and cannot run. What he can do is strike a ball and for that he is (as has been proven) as a last resort can score a vital goal. If you must start with him plonk him front in the hope a ball might come to him that he can strike but does not involve much running.

Truly dire experience yesterday
at 09:10 7 Apr 2024

I have been to alot of games this year, home and away - but more away. In a season that I have mostly enjoyed 3 away games stand out as being awful - Sunderland away, Huddersfield away and yesterday. At least Sunderland away you have to say Sunderland were good on that day but what we had yesterday were 2 very poor teams playing as if it was a meaningless end of season game with nothing riding on it. If our intention was to keep a clean sheet and just not losing then in that respect I guess we succeeded but my god, it was dire and painful to watch.

It would be difficult to pick out someone that played well as no one did. Not one of our players had a good game or even looked like having a good game. Even the players that you could once rely on barely broke sweat. Edozie when he came on seemed to be the only one prepared to put some effort in. Bazunu had a quiet uneventful day which given his recent record is something, but only because Rovers were as toothless as we were. 4 attempts in total on goal between the 2 sides - one of ours did actually hit the bar!

Playoffs is more or less certain but if we truly think we will get anything playing like that or recently then we may as well not bother. Teams that may not have the supposed quality that we have (though I am getting tired of us saying we have a good team on paper because they are not showing it at all) will fight and give their all and get around our boring, dull and insipid tippy tappy possession, going nowhere football.

I don't know what has gone wrong but we just look a team that has lost its way, no passion, no fight, no direction. Even Frazer looks a shadow of the person he was a little while ago. We were awful on the left and what is the point of crossing high and wide
out to the wings when we have a player is about 5ft tall? Smallbone when he came on was awful - his corners - not one got past the first man and one of his corners actually allowed Rovers to make a run towards our goal. Aribo tried but to little effect. Our midfield offered little anything as an inspiration and there was no creativity or imagination. No one seemed to want to have a go..

There was a thread earlier in the week of people being tired of football and Saints and yesterday I felt that. I am tired of us as a team be it under this manager or previous ones losing their way and being unable to motivate and create a team that fights to the end. I can cope with losing if we have tried but where was the effort yesterday?

A day wasted to be honest. The trip to the ground was good and the locals appeared friendly. I was tempted to boo at the end - I didn't, but I didn't wait around to clap when the team gave nothing deserved nothing back in my view.

Yet perversely Blackburn Rovers named him man of the match, yet he was non-existent for most of the match - having said that, just about all the players on the pitch were non-existent for most of the match. A truly dire game with 2 very poor teams. One was no better or worse than the other.
