 | Forum Reply | Fearsomely in-form Boro too hot for QPR to handle – Report at 11:50 15 Dec 2025
I didn’t see it live and I haven’t watched the ‘highlights’ back so can only comment based on other opinions that I value and respect. We seem to have been completely overwhelmed in the first half and quite fortunate to only be two behind. You can debate all day long about a third midfielder, but even if you went with two, surely JS could have introduced fresh legs there? Hayden for Varane seemed a logical choice. What can be overlooked is that euphoric endings - despite being what we love the game for - can be very emotionally draining, especially in the wake of an energy expending performance like we put in for the full 97 v Brum. And mid-field is the area hardest hit when driving your team on as Madsen and Varane (esp 2nd half) were doing on Tuesday night. I have some sympathy with JS for playing RND again on Sat despite having to ‘manage’ him from an injury perspective. What was the alternative? Field not fully fit and he couldn’t risk the Brazilian kid after the Ipswich fiasco. However, I believe Morrison should have played instead of JCS as the latter is still way off the pace and this was too big a game for him. Good to see him getting back to fitness and he could have a big say in the second half of the season if we can keep him fit and get him up to speed - but Sat was the wrong game for him. |

Well I don’t know. I have started reasonably well-balanced, mildly interesting threads in the recent past and received zero responses. Perhaps inanity is the way to go? |

I mean I fully get the euphoria of scoring a last minute winner and that can lead to us losing the run of ourselves. But seriously, we have been down this route so many times in the past and it has -without exception - ended badly. Consequently we end up taking two or three years cleaning up our mess and getting back to a position of substainability (where we are now). Honestly we have been extremely fortunate not to have been relegated to League 1 on at least two occasions as we lurch from ‘boom or bust’ in the past decade or so. Let’s be patient. Personally in no rush to get back to the Premier League, just enjoying being competitive and winning more than we are losing at present. But IF we are to gain promotion lets do it in the right way, like Brentford, or Bournemouth or Crystal Palace, so that we can make a decent fist of staying there and perhaps challenging for a European spot eventually. First we will have to endure some pain, like selling Burrell and /or Madsen. But for a decent wedge, not because we have to and replacing them with a better version that will make us stronger in the long run. We have got ourselves (once again) out of the mire, let’s not blow it by behaving irrationally. Let’s learn from previous mistakes and become stronger incrementally over the next few years. |

That's the second year in a row we have had a Chair with a dodgy back. |

I do feel our defending of set -pieces has improved incrementally but steadily in recent weeks, so credit Mr Bould for that. Our ‘long’ throws are at best amusing. If Dunne is not standing a couple of yards inside their box, then it is just going to be cleared with interest. I love Smithy, but it’s biologically impossible for short people to take long throws. No matter how far he arches himself backwards, he hasn’t got enough length/strength in his arms to provide the necessary trajectory. But also, as you pointed out elsewhere, if our players are just standing there, waiting for him to throw it then it is easy to defend against. You need runners, decoy runners, general off the ball movement, to create a bit of mayhem in the box and then hope the ball drops kindly for someone to have a strike at goal. |

I think this is true. Even top non-British keepers have always opted to punch rather than catch. As long as they make decent contact it’s fine, no different than a solid header. It’s the flapping away with fingertips that causes panic. |

Fantastic run and cross for Dunne - agreed. Didn’t do much else imo and would have hooked him much earlier. The header he ‘won’ was when he was totally unmarked and just nodded it back in the general area of the penalty spot. ‘Smyth should have scored’ I mean I know he has two headed goals this season. But there were three Birmingham defenders around him and he’s 5’6’’. He tried his pushing the defender at the last minute and remarkably got his header on target despite the odds. Sadly straight at the keeper. Don’t feel Saito contributes much overall. Might be better as an impact sub. Looking forward to seeing more of Poku. Get Chair back and can’t see Saito being a regular starter. |

Yes felt there wasn’t a lot in it first half, but felt we were much the better side second half and a more confident Kone buries that chance and the game is over. But delighted we came again after conceding so late and got our just desserts |

Put in a crunching tackle on Gray down by the corner flag not long before the equalisers too. Grew into the game and looked very good second half. |

Ridiculous save, just hope he hasn’t injured himself just as he is running into a bit of form. Second game in a row he is denied a well-deserved clean sheet. Coming out and (sort of) dealing with crosses now. Even playing as a sweeper even if he scarred the bejaysus out of me in the first five minutes! |

Tbf I don’t think he was fully fit for the first dozen games or so. Lot more running at FB than CB so playing with a hip injury probably hampered him a bit. Think it was a great switch back to CB by JS and he is back to his best now. Birmingham must hate the sight of him! |

What I love about the ‘long shot’ pic at the top, was that the three Milwall players in view were busting a gut to get to the sideline (I’m sure to ‘mediate’) while the two BC, players were just standing there, hands on hips. Tells us all we need to know, methinks. [Post edited 7 Dec 22:50]

Even Nardi came outside his box to head the ball! Next thing he’ll be venturing up for our corner kicks |

Are coming from very unexpected sources this year . Meanwhile Dunne is casually flicking the ball home with his left foot. The world has gone mad! |
