EFL clubs to vote on expanding Championship playoffs to six clubs 16:45 - Feb 10 with 8180 viewsdmm

EFL clubs will next month vote on an expansion of the Championship playoffs to six teams after being given approval to pursue the radical change by the Football Association’s board. https://www.theguardian.com/fo

Do we really need any more football matches?

Hopefully reject that. The play-offs are absolutely fantastic as they are.
Rewarding mediocrity never a good idea.

I would guess that this will happen as enough clubs will see it as an opportunity to get into the play-offs to vote in favour

Yep, neither does Chris Wright

Of course they should reject it. But I don't think they will, the clubs will act in their own self interest which is going to be to maximise the chance of going up

How are they going to work out how 6 teams can get into a final of 2 teams?

Yet again, Execs pi$$ing around with stuff 'cos they can't leave things alone and need to keep themselves in a job.

3rd & 4th Straight to Semi Final
5th - 8th to play off to get in to the semi final
Don't mind it actually..

It's wrong, leave things the way they are.

They should open up playoffs to 20 teams . Those 20 teams then each play each other twice. The top four then go in to the playoffs

It’s what they already do in the Conference

They do a version of this in Conference North/South and although my general feeling it we don’t need a change, this appears to work well as it is could be worth exploring. Would keep the season going longer for many clubs and a bit more end of season revenue.

Farcical. May as well just turn the whole thing into a tournament.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Should just be a 1 game semi final with 3rd and 4th playing at home, and the final. More reward for a higher placed league position.

They've had worse ideas. Would certainly make the league season a lot more open

EFL should be focusing on the League 2 -> National League promotion / relegation wayyy before this. 2 up / 2 down is a farcical system

I'm all for it. Modern football is all a bit farcical anyway. Could make our seasons a bit more interesting, that's all I'm bothered about.

Assuming you stick with home and away ties in the playoffs up to the final it will mean teams finishing 5th-8th will have to play five post-season matches, or effectively a 51 game season if they reach the playoff final.

This will give clubs yet another incentive to sack off the cup fixtures.

It's a terrible idea.

In the article mentioned in the opening post it says this:

'The fifth-placed team would play the eighth-placed team, and sixth would play seventh, at the higher-ranked club’s ground in a one-off tie to determine progression to the two-leg playoff semi-finals against the clubs that finished third and fourth.'

So a maximum of 4 games instead of the current 3

My initial reaction was no but actually I also don't mind it. When the playoffs were first discussed lots of people were against it, how could 6th go up instead of 3rd.

This is an expansion on that - will keep the league competitive a bit longer and aurguably give the teams in 3rd / 4th a better chance of going up by having more rest and one less game before the semi-finals.

I like the current format and don't think it needs changing, but I don't think this is a terrible idea.

I can't see it not being voted for - you'd think neatly all clubs would vote for it.

I'd be much less keen on this happening with relegation places.

Fair enough.

But I still think it's a terrible idea, and I still think it will give clubs another reason to "concentrate on the league" and ignore the cups.
