The Labour solution seems to be: crack down on the people smugglers, returns deal with the EU, and extra safe routes.
My problem with this is that the Tories are already trying the first without a great deal of success. Just in relation to paying France to police its border, the HoC Library states that the UK paid £232 million directly between 2014 and April 2023, plus another £86.9 million on related expenditure such as Channel tunnel security and border strengthening. Moreover, the UK has committed to spend around £476 million to fund French assistance between 2023/24 and 2025/26. (Just as a reference point the amount so far spent on Rwanda is £240 million up to December 2023.)

There have been attempts to engage with Belgium, Germany and Turkey to slow the supply of rubber boats to the French coast, which will also have cost something. It is unclear what more Labour could do and what the cost would be.

The safe routes proposal has never made sense to me as the numbers of people wishing to move from conflict-affected countries, or those where some people may be at risk of persecution, is very high indeed. There will always be a fair number of asylum seekers who do not meet the criteria for refugee status. We have seen what is happening on the US Southern border with safe routes already provided. The people smugglers would still have many takers.

You are right about the immigration numbers they are huge. Governments have allowed the population of the U.K. to increase significantly over the last 20 years, initially there was an influx from Eastern Europe when we were in the EU which governments and employers liked for different reasons, but more latterly over the last 3 years legal and illegal immigration has rocketed. Some parts of the government are still advocating increased levels of immigration because it benefits the economy and public services, NHS etc.
While there are benefits to immigration, there are downsides too and we are seeing that in terms of the lack of affordable housing, whether that is social housing or private housing - it’s mental that the average house is around 9 times the average wage. We don’t have enough doctors, we’re not building hospitals , we’ve got one of the lowest number of bed to patient ratios in the developed world , we’re not building houses, not investing in our infrastructure, water, sewers, power generation etc etc.
Immigration is also masking another major issue - we’ve got a lot of people who don’t want to work and that really needs addressing. Benefits should be a safety net not a life style choice, but addressing this is a difficult one. If you cut benefits, there’s a risk of pushing people in to poverty, but how do you incentives work without cutting benefits? I spoke to a lady this week, she was 79 and it was clear she knew her way around the benefits system and how to get round things, I was astounded.
In terms of children and the birth rate, it’s defo falling across many socio economic groups because quite simply people can’t afford kids. When houses are 9x the average salary and child care is so expensive, people can’t afford many kids. Fairly recently a couple of conservative MP’s drew attention to the falling birth rate and suggested axing the cap on family allowance and a few other measures because they can see what’s happening, but I don’t think anything came of it. The only people I know having multiple kids are the chavmungous, the NEETs etc who don’t give two hoots, drag up their kids etc etc- they are the very people we don’t want having masses of kids as they are likely to be the clients of the Courts, social services etc etc in the future. | | | |

Looks as though I missed a key element in my earlier post. Labour will add the nearly 100,000 undocumented migrants who are ineligible for asylum under current legislation to the asylum backlog. This represents a 7-fold increase in the number queueing and appears far beyond present processing capacity. To deal with that, Labour plans to recruit 1000 new officers, plus arrange new returns agreements. At the moment very few returns are possible, so it looks like rejected cases will be allowed to stay on a more temporary basis. I think it is fair to say that in reality they are talking about an amnesty.
If there have been signs of a deterrent effect with the recent influx of around 7000 migrants into Ireland, that seems to have just gone out the window with a Labour election victory likely. Was that the plan in making the announcement now? Were the Labour front bench afraid that the Rwanda policy seemed to be starting to work? [Post edited 2 May 7:26]

There has been the predictable outrage from the predictable sources to the Governments plans to reform PIP, but it is, at heart, something that probably does need looking at. I do question whether someone who suffers from mental health issues needs extra funding. More to the point, in my experience, the worst thing you can do for people with poor mental health is pay them to sit at home all day.
Covid saw an explosion in the cases of people reporting poor mental health. Quite clearly as a direct result of the lockdown mandates, especially amongst the young. Humans are social creatures. They need to be outdoors and with other people. Forcing or enabling them to do the opposite has done a tremendous amount of damage. [Post edited 2 May 8:03]
