Hi all, has anyone on here been to Hong Kong, I am flying out from December 12th - 23rd, first time to Asia not inc the likes of Turkey.
My Mrs is a nanny and will be working a lot of the time while we are out there during the day, so we will mostly being doing stuff during the night when she has finished but hoping she will get 2 or 3 days off also.
Got a real nice 5* hotel booked in Lan Kwai Fong which I think is meant to be central and the trendy busy part, but other than that I'm pretty clueless on the whole place, so if there are any R's who live out there or who have visited then any feed back is very much appreciated!
also have stop over's in Dubai on both way out and way back which again is a new place, my friend who lives out there will pick me up from the airport both times one is for 8 hours the next is about 17 hours ... so if any has any recommendations for my quick visit there then again very much appreciated.

Was out there for work 2 years ago for 5 nights, spent half the time getting kicked around by our customer during the day and then half the time trying to stay awake from Jetlag during the night, but I absolutely loved the place. Stayed in central Mong Kok which I think is across the water from where you will be, but I found it an amazing experience and can't wait to go back there with the Mrs on a more relaxed holiday visit.
Very Jealous!
Their underground is very new looking and clean and easy to use. There is plenty to see there so I would just check out the guides before you go, see what takes your fancy and just hit the ground running |  |

I've been to HK a few times and love the place. Going on the star ferry is great and there is a really good restaurant on Victoria peak looking over the city. You can also take one of the ferries to some of the nearby islands. I think the place has a great feel to it and its so easy to get around.
We went on the train to some ancient village where you have to get a cable car to get there. That was really enjoyable. Maybe someone here knows the name of it.
I remember that in the city there were lots of happy hours everywhere, so that's always good. |  | | |

I have an extensive knowledge on Hong Kong so here goes. Where you are staying is indeed in the trendy part of central. LKF is good for nights out as well, there are two pedestrianized streets full of bars that are open throughout the night. LKF also has a famous goose restaurant but I can't remember it's name.
Wan Chai just down the road is also a good and wild night out, however one end of the road is just strip clubs but the other end is fine. From Dusk till Dawn is a great place to see in the next morning.
Plenty of shopping to be done, there is the IFC mall in central but I liked the Ocean plaza in Kowloon. Get the Star Ferry (good old fashioned ferry, sit in the front of the upper deck) across the harbour to Kowloon, walk along the 'avenue of stars' which is a sort of raised promenade looking across to HK island. Kowloon also has a great restaurant called Hutong (very old fashioned Chinese style) at the top of a skyscraper. It's expensive but the view and the experience are worth it. If you're interested book well in advance and get a table by the window.
Happy Valley racecourse have races in midweek if it's still in season. If you like dim sum go to Tim Ho Wan but I can't remember where it was. It's famous because it's the cheapest Michelin star restaurant (more like a caf) in the world (or it was when I was there).
Go to the viewing point at Victoria Peak overlooking HK. Do it by day and you see the landscape or by night to see the lights Get the metro to Admiralty and walk through the park to the tram station and take the tram up to the peak. Get an Octopus card for public transport.
If you want to look at markets then go to the Ladies night market (ignore the name) and Temple Street.
Go see the BIg Buddha on Lantau Island. Take the cable car from Tung Chung (which also has a good outlet shopping centre).
Plenty of villages to visit outside of the city and in the new territories. Don't bother with the pink dolphin sightseeing - I didn't see any!
Can also go to Ocean Park and Disneyland on Lantau if you like those sort of things.

More than enough info to go of there, the two main things I had looked at was Macau and ocean park as I'm quite into all that and want to see the Panda's so glad you mentioned that.
I will definitely be printing off your post and taking that with me to HK, Very interested in museums especially anything to with War if you know any ????
Also a quick cheeky question I really to watch the ashes when I'm out there think the time difference is only 2 hours, do you think they will be anywhere that shows the cricket ?? Ocean world is great for the pandas but can get horribly crowded.
Trams, do them on HK island, only $2HK per journey no matter the length and you can go top deck front and open the window and see HK at your leisure.
Nathan road on Kowloon have hantastic deals on on cameras and lenses at the moment. Just unpack them and leave the packaging there. It never fails :-)
I'd forget the hollywood style walk too, unless you like to walk as there's no history there.Lol
Try tea in the Peninsula hotel on Kowloon for a treat. (Featured in the man with the golden gun)
As you come back on the tram from Happy Valley, almost at the end of the racecourse, on the left is the graveyard that Bruce Lee was in in 'Enter the Dragon'
An evening in Discovery bay is cool if you fancy mixing with the Brits. Ferry from HK terminal 'E' I think.
Macau is cool, go to Kowloon and choose your type of travel company (terminal is under the Royal Pacific Hotel) and once you arrive in Macau the busses to the casinos are free.
A walk into the old town is good, with views of Mainland China from the fort ramparts.

I went to two museums, the Hong Kong museum of history I think was near TST in Kowloon. I found it very impressive it has a sort of walk through time from pre-historic through to Chinese antiquity, European trading, opium wars, colonization, ww2/Japanese occupation, independence, post independence etc. I really enjoyed that one. The other I went to was the art museum also in Kowloon. I think if you go on a Wednesday (best to check) it's free entry.
Wan Chai has loads of bars and expat bars all showing sport so it won't be hard to find somewhere. The two main roads of interest are Lockhart Road and Hennessy Road (parallel with each other).
As someone else mentioned you could go across to Discovery Bay (which is where I was) which is just like a huge housing resort for expats and pilots. Has a plaza with a few bars and restaurants. Get the DB ferry. (they run throughout the night by the way) | | | |

Yes Discovery Bay is where I used to live.
We were working on the Tsing Ma Bridge to the new Airport at the time. Easily the best job I have had (or will have) in my life. I am not sure it is worth a day at DB though. I went but that was purely for nostalgic reasons and to show our sons where we used to live!
As well as those markets you mention the Bird market is worth a visit as well. A trip to the New Territories would give you a real flavour of China as well. | | | |
