Footballers investigated for tax dodge on 14:31 - Aug 10 with 913 viewsNewBee

I was listening to some radio discussion the other day and one of the contributors mentioned that in Italy, footballers only pay 25% income tax.

I thought this must be wrong, but it turns out that he was referring to foreign footballers moving to the country, under a new law passed last summer and in fact it could be even less than 25%:

Huge tax reduction for foreign players who move to Italy

Under the new tax law players who move to Italy from abroad will be given a tax exemption covering 50% of their salaries, meaning a player earning €10M euros would only be taxed on €5M. That would give a tax bill of around €2.15M at the top rate of 43%, which is an effective rate of 21.5% (compared to 45% in Spain or the UK). Given that players almost always receive their salaries net of tax, that is the club pays both the salary and the tax, this new regime makes it far cheaper for Italian clubs to bring in foreign players.

Of course, we can still take it as read eg that Christiano Ronaldo only signed for Juve because he needed the challenge of winning the CL with a third club and in a third country. The crap weather in Spain probably had something to do with it as well...
