Well before the game the crowd was struggling to get in and there was a serious crush right before the game.

I strongly suggest sending complaints into Charlton, that was dangerous.

I'm sure the rush to get out could be as dangerous!

The Chelsea fans who went there for the cup (I know, I know) said it was a death trap.

Getting Whatsapps from people who'd left London bridge at half six saying they were kettled in some narrow alleyway at ten to eight and going to miss kick off.

They're not wrong.

I'll be drafting something tomorrow. Especially because one steward said 'should hand got here earlier'.

It was appalling to get in. Could have been some serious crush issues there this evening. The stewards were equally bad. Seem to be chucking people out every few seconds. How the hell that place gets a safety certificate I don’t know? We had got there at a reasonable time as well. Entry system was like the old days.

Train at around 6:50 got cancelled so it was carnage then the train we ended up on at about 7:15 got kept outside Charlton so more than usual turned up 10-15 mins before KO but there was a lot they could have done to ease the crush and between the police and stewards they just couldn’t be arsed. Opening all the turnstiles may have been a good start. Only missed the first few minutes and most of that was probably the Vale yellow.

Entering the ground was as bad as I've ever known, anywhere. We missed the first 15 minutes of the match. There appeared to be no reason for the problem other than an atrocious crown control plan. They need to get it sorted.

It wasn’t helped by the queue to scan out of Charlton station as there were only two scanners.A 10 minute queue to get out and another queue at the turnstiles to get in.It would have been nicer to have more than 3 turnstiles open.
It’s as if they aren’t used to seeing that number of away fans turn up.It really was dangerous, and I’m surprised that they didn’t delay the ko.

If too many people complain to them about the issues tonight, they’ll just reduce our allocation for next season, assuming they stay up.

Haven't been for a while but Ipswich used to have only Two visiting fan turnstiles.

It was deliberately bad. No other explanation.

Open the gates at the station and have more than 2 places to tap out, and have more than 2-4 turnstiles to let 3,000 fans through.

What was it like getting out of there ? Stomached 10 mins outside Charlton station then decided to walk to North Greenwich ! Long fking walk !!!
Navigate to London Bridge then onto Euston and delayed again cos our transport system is in place but fking useless!!
Not home yet and still on the train now, would be easier to get home from Sheffield or somewhere!!

Saw various trains were being cancelled so we ducked out in injury time and made the 2205 back to London. No issues getting on. Know from previous games you either go slightly early or you’re stuck in that queue for ages. The farce at the station for 2 places to tap out was a joke as well at the station.

Yeah, we got a bus from North Greenwich and back, no chance we were going to Charlton station. Got home around 00:15.

It was a similar ball ache to getting there in the first place in terms of huge queues, but actually moved quite quickly if you stuck it out.

We made the executive decision that ‘it’s a friday night, ive nowhere else to be…’ and doubled down on the trains. They closed the gates to the train station after the station filled up, for the 10:20ish train, but got on the 10:40 relatively comfortably. Suspect that anyone who wanted a train would have been able to get on the subsequent one at around 11:00ish

Can we not knock it?

Posted this in the match thread before I saw this thread:

“I was outside the stadium 20 minutes before kickoff and missed the first 10 minutes of the game. It got a bit squashed as they funnelled us through the tight alley to the 4 turnstiles that looked like they’ve stood there since the ground was built. Had people shoving me in the back trying to break through the stewards. First time in a while I’ve actually been a bit worried in a crowd.”

Charlton fans on the championship Reddit were even saying it’s bad and needs to be sorted.

We were quite lucky getting in as just after we got there they put up a cordon blocking everyone getting up to the entrance for some reason. I was searched by a steward before the turnstiles who then insisted on going through all the compartments in my wallet. I told him I thought it was a bit ott and that I’ve been to loads of away games and never had that done before. He said I could talk to the police if I wanted and that people were taking drugs. I said lucky them! Got past him and another one tried to search me! Seemed to me like they were all under a lot of pressure, police and stewards.

Did get the vibe a bit before the game it was one of those where the police/stewards were as interested in creating a scene as stopping one. In the ground it was do whatever you want which was a relief.

It was mismanaged and is regularly managed badly. FFS, I've been to Luton several times, and that is probably the worst away end I've been to, but I've never felt as unsafe getting into a ground as I did last night.

I am sending a complaint today – children, older people and people with mobility issues were seriously at risk last night. Imagine if we'd scored in the first couple of minutes – what would that crush have been like?

This is the kind of stuff about the game that we should get right.

This shouldn't be happening getting on for 40 years after Hillsborough.

Complaints should go to the club with a copy to the local authority and the Sports Ground Safety Authority.

Club in the first instance – they're the ones responsible.

As I said in my email:
I am copying this complaint to the Football Supporters’ Association, as they support away fans with safety and stewarding concerns, and my own club, QPR, so they are aware of the safety issues affecting their travelling supporters.

Please respond by email. I am retaining a copy of this complaint and your response in case escalation is required via the SAG at the Royal Borough of Greenwich, EFL or the Independent Football Ombudsman.

I copied in:
Safety Officer
Matchday Safeguarding Officer
Senior Safeguarding Manager
Metropolitan Police Football liaison for CAFC

You have to give them a chance to respond first. I've asked for an investigation, including CCTV and interviews with stewards and supervisors, with explanations as to how the decisions were made, executed, and followed up. They KNEW it was a clusterfúck - a supervisor told me to write in – they weren't coping, let alone managing the crowd. They've 15 working days to respond before escalation; it doesn't make sense to escalate above the club now since they have to prove they were in control (they weren't) and able to manage the crowds (they can't). An unsatisfactory response moves it up the ladder.

Sadly, as was highlighted in the West Ham thread a few weeks ago, supporters are their own worst enemy with drugs being so openly used at games. If more people called it out as inappropriate there would not be the requirement to do these needless searches.

TBF, many years ago we didnt need the searches then, its only been higher in more recent times.

And to be clear Cate, I am aware it may be the minority but the majority need to report it so as it ceases to be an issue.
