Will 50 points mean safety? Prediction competition
at 16:33 3 Mar 2024

I think we'll do it but will need to get over 50 points.

Agree that Birmingham and Sheffield Wed at home are crucial games to win (or at least not lose) , but given our away form at present it may be the matches at Swansea, Sunderland and Plymouth that turn out to be key.

Millwall

I think we were 8 points clear of relegation or something when Ainsworth took over. Millwall are only 1 point clear. He's got a tough job and a poor recent record in the championship. Madness to get rid of Rowett. .

Currently seems like excellent business in transfer Window

Agree. One of our biggest problems has been the 'Sat-Tues-week' where we have rotated the squad. That revealed our lack of depth. Millwall away and Cardiff at home seemed to confirm that in the midst of a busy schedule. We know for example that when Cook starts we rarely lose. Cook and Clarke-Salter seem key to our survival but strengthening other areas also important to get through the two match weeks coming up.

Relegation beckons.

Agree Brian. 19 games to go. I also don't accept that all the home January matches are the make or break games, given we are just as likely to win - and lose! - away from home. We should have won at Ipswich and will get other chances. Though we will definitely need to beat Huddersfield!

Agree with this. Also he was part explaining the change that all players were coming back to defend corners

Nick London gone!
at 16:39 26 Nov 2023

One of the things he was particularly good at was an awareness that coverage was for both TV and audio. Billy Rice didn't seem to have that yesterday. Listening to the audio it was difficult to know what was happening a lot of the time.

Very sad to see him go. Nick and Andy were a terrific duo. Couldn't they have just given him a yellow or a three match suspension?

False 9 anyone?
at 20:10 25 Nov 2023

Yes, agree Brian. Early signs very promising and can see big change in style, though he has little time to turn things around.

Intrigued to know what he plans for January, after a good look at this squad, and working within our very limited resources.

At least until January. If so who would it be?

Elijah Bonner Dixon

Thought Dixon-Bonner was excellent. Mystery why we have seen so little of him, but I suppose partly explained by Ainsworth's approach and style. Saw EDB in a friendly against Livingston during the world cup break and he was one of the best players on the pitch. Technically very good, energy and pace, always wants the ball and made late runs into the box a couple of times. Unlucky not to score.

Not a one off in my view. Think we will see a lot more of him.

Optimistic about this. Felt like relegation was inevitable under Ainsworth but now time for (yet another) new start. Or false dawn. I don't think it should be too much of a culture shock. As some have pointed out already, Cook and Begovic played under Eddie Howe and Cook and Colback played under Steve Cooper at Forest. Most of the rest have played under Warburton/Beale. The real culture shock would have been Ainsworth and the Haka. Wonder what (if anything) will happen to backroom coaching staff. Will there still be a role for Paul Hall? Will Marti have more input on the coaching set-up?

Ainsworth post-match interview
at 11:49 25 Oct 2023

Among many of Ainsworth's weaknesses, it seems to me, is that he can't set up the team in a way which gets the best out of our players. With the players available, and injuries permitting, I think 4-2-3-1 would suit the current squad

Begovic

Cannon Cook JCS Paal
Field Colback
Willock, Chair, Smyth
Dykes

If is to be Warnock (who knows?) then that was the kind of system he favoured with us before.

Some good, gradual progress with a stronger spine and more know-how in the team, with some light at the end of a long dark tunnel assuming we can improve our home form.

Think he might go for same team and formation we had against Cardiff, with Dykes just behind Armstrong.

Few Thoughts
at 07:34 8 Aug 2023

Richards and Willock are two different cases. Richards has shown only glimpses of his potential so far, but Willock for a while was our best player, highly rated, and when playing with Chair has been our most creative force. His injury set him back but Ainsworth played him in the pre-season friendlies - admittedly out of position and on the opposite side to Chair - and even commented on signs of returning to form and fitness. Willock did an interview on the eve of the Watford match and it seemed he was up for it. Then Ainsworth preferred to play Kelman instead. Clive suggests that was because of Willock's attitude but it seems to me that it may have more to do with the way Ainsworth prefers to set up and his reluctance to use the number 10s in their best position. With our limited resources surely we need our best players in their best positions, and to reunite Willock with Chair.

Ainsworth on Oxford

Completely agree. Would also be very happy with Eustace who played a key role in rebuilding after McClaren, and seems to be turning Birmingham round (who were in a worse state than us).

Yes, mistakes were made under Warburton but, as Antti says, on all the big issues, improving young players, establishing a style of attacking football, and making us outside contenders for a play-off position, he delivered.

Dixon-Bonner
at 08:30 30 Jul 2023

The few times I've seen him, in the friendly against Livingston, a couple of cameo appearances for first team and a couple of B team/U23 games, he has impressed. Looks composed, good on the ball and as we saw against Reading, shows a bit of pace. Not sure what his best position is as he's played both as a defensive midfielder and as a 10. I thought he would be a good option with Field in a 4-2-3-1, yet Ainsworth seems content to keep the unimpressive Dozzell there.

We've lost Tim, Johansen and Amos from last season and have not replaced them. Yesterday, we were outplayed by Oxford's midfield, led by Brannagan. Surely Dixon-Bonner is worth starting. Need a new presence in midfield to give Field some support. Just as important as sorting central defence in my view.
