Best/Worst Inventions
at 19:15 9 Jul 2026

I was going to say the alphabet. I accept there are many of them around the world, but the principle of my call remains the same.

If people insist on suggesting that's not an invention, then I'll suggest the printing press, which facilitated education for the masses as well as providing records of human history over time.

To put the importance of this in context, where would your workplace be without an Ops Manual?

Hull clearance sale

I would be interested in reading the small print in that deal. Maybe there's a buy-back clause for Stg2.75m which could be triggered by either club within the next 12 months?

I went to Croke Park this afternoon and witnessed an almighty resurrection by Dublin in the last 10 minutes of the match to put another heavily fancied All Ireland challenger to the sword. This is the same team who narrowly beat Wicklow and lost to both Westmeath and Louth a few weeks ago.

The team proved to themselves over the past two weeks that if they up the tempo, start making selfless runs into space and work together, that they are capable of challenging at the highest level. Dublin are beginning to believe.

The Irish men's team have just beaten India again in a T20, to win the series 2-0.

Fixtures thread - announced at midday
at 15:51 26 Jun 2026

There are only eight home games on Saturdays this side of the New Year. That's before Sky Sports announce which matches they'll move to facilitate their coverage. Planning a day-trip over to London on a date which suits several people probably rules out the three matches in August and December combined.

Does anyone know when Sky will announce their selections, so I could then book flights with confidence?

Drinking Alcohol in the ground.
at 23:18 22 Jun 2026

You can drink at rugby matches here in Ireland. The problem is that you are being asked to stand up on a very regular basis to either let people out to the bar, or let them back to their seats while trying to balance four pints in a fragile cardboard container. Often times there is spillage. All of which means it can be a poor experience for fans who just want to watch the match without such distractions.

The Irish rugby union are charging a fortune for international tickets. Too many corporate types are attending and are just there for the beer, and the true fans are getting very frustrated and disillusioned with this type of expensive experience.

Nobody in Dublin gave the team any chance of beating Donegal before today's fixture. The recent performances have been so poor that one journalist wrote that you'd get a bigger crowd at the 8.00am mass in the pro-cathedral than at a Dublin match these days. But the team turned up today.

While the Dublin defence and midfield were solid, their front line were misfiring. Unless the coaching team sort that out, nobody is going to be worried if they get drawn against Dublin tomorrow morning.

Kerry are looking ominously good. They destroyed a very good Armagh side this weekend. Now that Kerry's recent nemesis ((Donegal) are out too, who is going to stop them?

I just hope he finds it within himself to pass the ball forwards. Maybe then he'll realise his potential.

Barbecue thread.
at 12:50 15 Jun 2026

I tried this out over the weekend. I bought the leg of lamb, trimmed off a lot of the fat, diced it and marinaded it overnight. The following day I made the tzatziki and cooked the kebabs with flat-capped mushrooms filled with cheese & pesto, sliced aubergines drizzled with olive oil, thyme, salt & pepper and a salad.

It was delicious and everyone loved it, even the most fussy of eaters! The only thing I'd do differently next time would be to cook the onions separately and for longer. The lamb itself cooks quite quickly, but you really need to cook onions on a BBQ for a good bit longer to get rid of that raw onion sensation.

I will be doing it again and would highly recommend it.

I'm surprised that FIFA hadn't agreed and arranged visas for their officials in advance. Their arrangements with the current administration are so cosy they even have their New York office in Trump Tower!

Buy a striploin joint, ask your guests in a timely manner how thick they'd like their steaks and slice the joint accordingly. Marinade and then cook.

My tomatoes and chilli plants have been grown from seed and are thriving on the kitchen windowsill. They'll be moving out to the garden tomorrow, when the cold snap is forecast to finish for good.

I think the coaching team just want to have a look at a broader spectrum of players who may not be/have been involved in the underage international squads.

I'm surprised that so many of the senior players are taking part in the training camp, they have had a long season.

If a defender had his arm positioned in a similar manner on a forward going for the ball in the box, does anyone think the ref would award a penalty?

Dare I be the first to say it. But given the combination of our tendency to accrue a lot of injuries, the fragility of our defense and the fairly pathetic performances at the tail end of this season, we could struggle next time around.
