Binnerettes game called off
at 08:53 18 Feb 2026

I think there is a world of difference between having away fans in hospitality and away fans upon home terraces. I was fortunate to spend a long career embracing sports marketing, often hosting hospitality at soccer, cricket, racing, squash, table tennis etc.

When we lost 5-0 to Norwich I enjoyed hosting 20 of my pals in the main sponsors box at Carrow Road. Flybe was (soon) pulling out of Norwich Airport and I was given free access (and food/drink) as I had done some work for the airline that their Board felt warranted reward knowing I was a U’s fan . Frankly, none of them were remotely interested in Norwich City versus Colchester United, so I probably did them a favour by it not being left embarrassingly empty (which might have prematurely set tongues wagging at the airport).

Most of us were in U’s colours (albeit with ties in pocket, just in case they enforced their rules) and the Delia Smith inspired hospitality was out of this world. There was good humoured banter with the Norwich fans on the terrace below, but nothing that would have embarrassed the real corporate owners of the facility. Post-match Hat-trick Cureton got more ribbing than he expected when he did his MoM appearance in the box, but it was all well behaved. As I said, hospitality is totally different to the foul language blighted terraces, even though by the final whistle the former is typically the more alcohol fuelled. Resisting free Prosecco takes much willpower.

A Clean Sweep
at 08:03 18 Feb 2026

Olympic action has inspired me. My missus has been away for a hen party fortnight overseas and I claim a number of personal bests…..

1. Managed to encounter all of the washing machine error codes in merely 8 days.
2. Zero black bag litter (as ready meals fill only paper and cardboard sacks).
3. Zero food waste (ditto)
4. Put out a record number of empty glass bottles for a single week.
5. Water consumption drops 80% (what does she do in that bathroom?).
6. Maybe (4) has relevance to (5) as beer replaces tea.
7. No worry about forgetting Valentines Day. She was ahead as regards time zones excusing me.

CUFC vs CUFC Take 2
at 07:42 18 Feb 2026

Just watched the full match replay on I-Follow. What struck me most was how many empty seats were in the (new) Home End Family Stand that we usually sell out. Instead we get allocated only 1045 tickets and U’s ST holders like me miss out. Cambridge got this badly wrong.

How we played so badly at Barrow, then deliver this excellent performance escapes me. We were also excellent at Crewe, but lost. The issue is patently that we need a reliable goal scorer and yet again Tovide failed to put away his chances. I bet Luton are grateful he failed the medical, but then he probably fell over and rolled about in the medical centre. We are really missing MBick.

I’ve not given up hope of still having something to play for in April, but it’s a relief to not be scrapping with Newport, Harrogate and Barrow on the brink of relegation. I hope Newport is the survivor as it is a decent away day, unlike the other two inadequate venues.

CUFC vs CUFC Take 2
at 08:25 17 Feb 2026

Nice work, but Tovide doesn’t deserve a start after Saturday.

Goodwin has shown a few glimpses of improvement but needs wide men that will give him service, rather than a teletubby that is always falling over and feinting injury. Tovide is no winger! Frankly, I’m not convinced Goodwin is a solution in the absence of MBick.

Our most influential player, Payne, has also been playing deeper to accommodate Akachukwa or Barbrook and (IMHO) Payne has therefore become less effective. I wonder, could Payne lead the line and become a Cureton like fox in the box? Drop Tovide and Goodwin to accommodate the two loanees that have impressed? A change of formation might then be desirable (or select a proper winger). The absence of Iandolo and MBick is a real headache.

I reckon Back is a better defender than Hunt, who is better in midfield. The conundrum there is neither are natural left backs. Might KVY go left and Back then right?

Along with many other ST holders, I don’t have a ticket and fear that tonight could be when the Johnny come latelys turn on Cowley. There was evidence of that at Barrow where the levels of player (and Cowley) abuse from some fans was over the top. With so many U’s fans in home areas, what could possibly go wrong? Cambridge ticketing is likely to create major issues, unless we win…..

Binnerettes game called off

Wish the game at Holker Street had been called off. Being turned back at Corley Services would have been far less miserable than travelling 15 hours to watch a U’s team lacking effort and motivation that allowed bottom of the league Barrow to do the double over us.

Now watching England cricket’s top order throwing away wickets to the Italian Australians. At least I won’t suffer at Cambridge tomorrow given the fiasco about tickets. Many ST holders amongst the 154 faithful at Barrow also haven’t got tickets. Perhaps a blessing….

Congratulations Concordman on your narrow victory. Had Wolves scored +1 more or Arsenal -1 less would have been a different result.

As I predicted, me and Concordman deadlocked after day one. Now it is probably down to the outcome of Birmingham v Leeds, our only non-consensual outcome. Surely the Premier Club must start as favourite?

After 15 miserable hours on the road to watch a dismal U’s performance, sadly, I suspect Leeds might similarly capitulate to complete my frustrating weekend. Villa is my other team (e.g. my birth legacy), and a bizarre goalkeeping decision ruined their FA Cup weekend. England Rugby also capitulated to the jocks. Even the comedy channel on SkyGo couldn’t lift my distress.

Why did I move to Colchester to suffer this eternal disappointment? Cowling Out!

Bluebirds to be overwhelmed by the Eagles

Disgraceful performance. Now seven hours home on a bus full of misery. Many fans firing verbal abuse at D Cowley. No urgency until we went behind.

Tovide simply awful, let him leave by mutual consent as he doesn’t look interested. U’s toothless in attack. This was THE worst performance I can recall since we were thumped 0-6 by Stevenage.

I was then a Villa fan, as this was long before my arrival in Essex and my undergoing conversion therapy in the Victorian Inn.

My wife is an inch taller than Gerry’s and accompanied me on my first four visits to Terrace Four, Layer Road. She then asked to be excused further attendance as “she hadn’t seen a ball kicked in 360+ minutes” and “her only pleasure was a cup of Bovril and my company at half time”.

She now buys me an annual season ticket on my Birthday to ensure I’m not interfering with her Saturday afternoon pleasures, which often involve Prosecco (and cake) along with her buddies.

I’m on the 0600 bus tomorrow hoping this will be my last ever visit to this ghastly ground. That wish being due to their relegation and not my mortality. Only Bromley is worse, although Harrogate comes close. Crawley at least makes an effort to welcome travelling fans. Even Layer Road was paradise compared to these s***holes. The EFL should revive re-election so that only those with suitable stadiums reach it.

Barrow (away) have always been bogey opposition for the U’s. Frequent diabolical refereeing (and Lino) decisions have often undone us. However, I don’t think we prepared well when our players were expected to travel cheaply rather than settle in early and climatise/recuperate. With DC at the helm that won’t apply tomorrow. We also have the boost of many long absent players being fit again. I hear Anderson might surprise us given he was in a knee splint at Brizzle. Flanaghan was similarly an unexpected returnee last week, but unless we play three CH’s (or back five) he should start on the bench. Barrow tend to be tall brutes, so the former could be an option.

We ought to slaughter them, but I suspect it will be tight on a boggy pitch and potentially uncomfortable.

Bromley tickets
at 16:36 10 Feb 2026

Had a chat today with a pal who is with the Essex Police Football Unit. The Police are aware that dozens of U’s fans have now bought tickets in the home areas for Bromley and notably for Cambridge, and fear problems.

If clubs can’t sell out the home stands themselves, why not allocate more seats to away fans to avoid this situation? Merely 120 Col U seats offered at Cambridge is a joke. When a sell out is predictable, surely clubs can apply some common sense?

I’m just hoping the game is on Sky HD+, as I suspect there will be huge disappointment.

Bromley tickets
at 13:33 9 Feb 2026

Merely 594 Bromley tickets are available via Colchester Utd with priority for ST holders. Thankfully, CUSA has already been able to resolve this for its ST holders that have booked along with their coach seat. I suspect (like Cambridge) around 400 U’s fans will be disappointed.

The Bromley ground capacity is merely 5,900 with only 1600 seats, How on earth will they cope if they get promoted to League One (which seems likely). The EFL should impose tighter ground rules to prevent clubs that don’t meet reasonable standards being admitted (or promoted). Last season, away women fans had only a single toilet and catering was a disgrace.

Anecdotal feedback suggests that it seems likely that many U’s fans might now have purchased home tickets for Cambridge. Home tickets are freely available on the Bromley website. As most of the ground is standing terraces, no specific seat numbers apply. Given that only ST holders have priority, and it’s certain to sell out, I wonder how many U’s fans will get into the home stands?

Only one thing would delight me more than seeing these tin-pot grounds relegated to the National League along with Harrogate. That is a U’s promotion and we then struggling to accommodate Sheffield Wednesday fans.

My semi-final looks like being decided by who gets the most three pointers as Concordman has matched all of my outcomes except one. It could possibly be that single outcome is the one that divides us. Birmingham to beat Leeds…….A bold prediction by my honorable opponent….

It gets worse….

It seems CUSA did obtain some standing only tickets, but were 17 short. Me and my best pal were hence disappointed, with the selection probably being based upon who is least prepared to stand (or was it who will make least fuss?).

Cambridge only allocating us 120 seats to Col U fans is a disgrace. I am aware of dozens of Col U fans that have since bought HOME tickets. What could possibly go wrong????

Next week, I will be on the 0600 CUSA bus to Barrow, unlike 80% of those that got Cambridge tickets. Loyal supporters? Where were the Johnny come lately kids when we were struggling?

Via CUSA, we were asked (by Bromley) to confirm that we are season ticket holders so I assume that priority is being given.

It’s a fair observation that many U’s season ticket holders can’t get a ticket for Cambridge. I also suspect one more defeat and the Johnny come latelys will probably lose enthusiasm. Few will be out of bed at 0500 for the trip to Barrow! I’ll be there…..

Cambridge FC Ticket Shambles.
at 14:41 6 Feb 2026

1. Cambridge FC have moved us from behind the goal to the side.
2. Behind the goal is now the Family Enclosure (Home only).
3. They release merely 120 seated tickets, probably taken by those that want to stand.
4. They release more standing tickets, which sell out in a day.
5. Zero tickets were reserved for the official Col Utd supporters club (CUSA).
6. Col Utd and CUSA were given no warning of this.

The result is many amongst the two already fully booked coach loads of regular supporters now don't have tickets where reliant upon CUSA to obtain them.

This is not CUSA's fault as they timely entered the scramble for tickets when announced and were simply unlucky. Hopefully, the game will feature on Sky HD+.

A similar situation is occurring at Bromley away which will also sell out. Fortunately, there has been prior liaison with the official CUSA supporters club to secure a sufficient allocation. Hopefully the problems of last season at Bromley will be avoided (such as having only a single female toilet for away fans and appalling catering provision).

The fact that Cambridge feel it satisfactory to allocate only 120 seats to away fans is appalling. If being honest, most of those without seated tickets don't want to stand. What ever happened to the EFL aspiration for all seater stadiums? It is pretty shambolic to offer us so few seats given how Colchester United bends over backwards to accommodate away fans at the Jobserve Community Stadium.

Let's also not forget the incident last season where Harrogate refused to let us drop off our elderly and disabled fans outside the ground. My guess is that Cambridge will do something similar insisting that the coaches drop off and park in the industrial estate about half a mile away. Whatever happened to disability discrimination!

Time to bring back re-election into the EFL, then tin-pot clubs like Bromley, Harrogate and Barrow with inadequate facilities might not be admitted. Cambridge should be denied promotion if they cannot better accommodate away fans with more seating.
