Travel advice - PTY
at 11:25 26 Dec 2022

I lived there for three years and Johann’s advice on areas is spot on. Lots of the fun nightlife is moving into Santa Ana now and lots of parts of it are safe. Generally, Panama City is safe so long as you don’t wander into the wrong neighbourhood.

Casco Viejo is beautiful and great for bars and restaurants. There is more upmarket stuff is along the Cinta Costera, Paitilla, Pacífico and San Francisco. It is, however, a better city to live in than it is to visit - aside from CV and the Canal there isn’t tons to see. That said, you can be in the rainforest in 15mins, Pacific beaches in 30, mountains in 40, Caribbean in an hour and on beautiful islands within a couple. Highly recommend visits to San Blas, Bocas del Toro and the peninsular around Las Tablas, Venao, Santa Catalina, etc.

Panama

Having previously lived in Panama for a few years a I couldn't be more delighted. Four years ago they looked like qualifying but let in two late goals against the USA to get knocked out. Will be great to give a positive imagine of Panama and Panamanians after having their reputation destroyed by the Panama Leaks. And I mean by that the ordinary, party-loving, incredibly diverse, and generally struggling Panamanians that you see in their support (the 'red wave' or 'marea roja'), not the well-off elite behind the scandal.

Also, annoyingly, I think Tozser would fit really well in this system...

I think Hall contributed to making us a lot more solid, and Derby barely had a sniff other than the goal. So on that account he was a positive. But I also agree that he 'got in the way a bit' - he was frequently too close to other players, not really offering an outlet, etc. If he is to develop into that role, he could do worse than learn a bit from how Johnson played for Derby, controlling the game from the base (admittedly he didn't have the best game either).

I also felt that with Hall out the back four we lost our best forward passer from defence. Our other centre backs are weaker at distribution, which made it harder for us to break through Derby's lines to find Chery and the other attacking players in space. And made harder still because we couldn't go direct to Washington - it might have worked better with Polter/Sylla.

Overall though there were signs of improvement. Cousins was excellent. The potential for a partnership with Luongo is clear. Hall could improve into the role with more experience, though I suspect we'll be looking to recruit another defensive midfielder who holds but can also pass. The lack of width was frustrating throughout, and a clear weakness of the system. But on the plus side it keeps us solid and allowed us to control the game. We did have several chances and on another day might have found a bit more luck.

How old is he now?

Maybe I'll curse him by getting his name on my shirt as I did to Balanta (I had just been to Colombia and fallen in love with the place).

Scored another brace for the under 21's today. I'll admit I don't keep as up to date as I might on youth players, but from what I have followed in seems consistently in the goals. Can anyone else with a better knowledge than my own let me know their thoughts on this kid?

non QPR: Italy holiday advice
at 22:56 16 Nov 2014

Strongly recommend Puglia region which includes Lecce as mentioned above. There are some beautiful small towns, particularly coastal ones. It's not overly touristy, it's cheap and the food is incredible (raw seafood if you're into that, otherwise usual Italian food). It's also really easy to explore by car, perhaps using Lecce as a base.

Verona is a lovely city that you've not seen yet too.

Strongly rumoured on Twitter, by a relatively reliable source, that we've agreed deal to sign Matt Phillips from Blackpool. Somewhere between 4-6 million. I'd count that as pretty mindblowing (I.e. not a championship manager 2008 signing).

Back to Harry... Don't want to be pessimistic, and I agree this is the most positive statement we've had from Redknapp in a while, but there is one element here that concerns me.

"He said he HAS to get QPR back up this season for personal pride and if not then he will be off."

It's not impossible. After all, Warnock basically turned us around in a summer. And I think it's a great piece of business getting our money back on Samba, giving us some room for the right signings.

However, what about the scenario where we don't get promoted? We all know that is a realistic outcome. Then in 12 months where do we find ourselves? Back to the drawing board, looking for a new manager, new players to fit that manager's style, players coming and going, etc. Once again we are taking another gamble, rather than trying to build.

This, of course, isn't a surprise. There isn't really an alternative whilst Harry is in charge due to his age, wage and style. Many of us would probably like to see us gamble again - the rewards are so great and we do still have talent in our squad, so it's not impossible. I might even be in that camp(!). But the other side of me would love to know we had a manager that was going to be with us for the next 5 years, building something. A journey rather than a roller-coaster. But then, that wouldn't really be QPR, would it?

Went to Panama vs Mexico last night. Whole country was a sea of red all day. Incredible how far little Panama have come to be able to draw with Mexico and have a decent shot at World Cup qualification. And the 500 or so Mexicans who made it, a puddle of green amongst the red masses, were impressively brave.

Certainly beats watching England.

I've been calm since the Wigan equaliser. But the thing still getting me down is that as an expat it's going to be a lot harder to watch the R's next year. Hopefully that will be countered by there being a few more wins to celebrate.

you could not make it up

The UK has no power to resolve the issue on its own. Without allies, including obviously the US but also support from the region, any intervention would be a disaster. And even with that support it would still be highly likely to result in the kind of mess that Iraq ended up in. Unlike Libya, any military venture would be extremely complex and have little guarantee of success. Other options like effective sanctions are off the table so long as China and Russia wield their vetoes.

Obviously there are some crap politicians. Many good politicians have made crap decisions. Not all act in good faith. Changes that were made to banking regulations were crap, and have resulted in a big mess. There were questionable links between the City and politicians. But we were talking about Syria, not the banking crisis. And the decisions that have been made so far on Syria I would suggest have been made in good faith and are probably the right ones for the UK, the people that our government represent. I'm sure they wish they could do more. By the way I don't get this automatic hatred of all bankers and Etonians. Many are prats, as are many of the working class you so desperately care for.

Neither Iraq or Afghanistan were justified on the basis of freedom (George Bush probably said it though). Both were in the name of national security. I'm sure you don't actually advocate this response anyway.

When does the season start again?
