Oriol Romeu Set To Return To Southampton As A Free Agent Monday, 3rd Nov 2025 15:05 With our centre of midfield stretched by the injury to Shea Charles and the illness that dogs Flynn Downes we could do with some reinforcements and Saints fans will be pleased to here a familiar face might be about to return.
The Daily Echo is reporting that Oriol Romeu could be about to make a dramatic return to St Mary's.
They say that "Romeu, 34, has been without a club since he mutually terminated his contract at Barcelona to help the Catalan giants.
"A deal has been agreed for Romeu's return to Saints, with the deal now pending a medical and other transfer formalities."
This will be great news for Southampton supporters who have been saying that we lack experience in the centre of the park, the Spaniard played 256 times in all competitions in a 7 year spell at St Mary's including being part of the team who lost to a late winner to Manchester United in the 2017 League Cup final.
He left in the summer of 2022 to join Girona before a season at Barcelona and then a return on loan to Girona.

Last season on loan at Girona he started 17 League games plus another 8 off the bench with 5 more games as an unused sub, missing the other 8 through injury or not in the squad.
He did play regularly in the Champions League starting 5 of their 8 games plus a run off the bench with two absences with injury.
If Romeu was to return for the game against Sheffield Wednesday it would go a long way in turning a potentially toxic atmosphere into a positive one.

I'd be happy to see him return. He might still be the onfield hard man we've so badly missed.

We have got a leader with bags of experience. Hopefully he will support the manager and cut out any nonsense in the dressing room.

May not be the same standard as before, but still a better bet than others in that role. If the rumours of a return for JWP is also on the cards(?)..it would give us a reprise of the best MF pair we've had in the last... 8 years.

We would never have gone down the season after Sports republic took over if they hadnt of sold all the experienced leaders and replaced them with academy players with literaly zero professional exerience between them. Its that simple. Since then, we have had limited experience and certinly no leadership on the pitch and off it managerially. Welcome back Oriel

The fact that Romeu was able to mix it in Spainsh top division including with Barcelona after leaving us showed he still had plenty in the tank. Based on our current squad he walks into the first XI. Maybe SR have turned a corner with their decision making. Lets reserve judgement until the new manager is named.

At last, a sensible decision by Saints' board! One wonders whether its timing correlates in any way to Still's departure … .

Sooo much more of a leader than Captain crap Stephens. Has the drive an d know how to form a great partnership with Jander. Let's hope this good news is not ruined by the return of Russell Martin.

What a stroke of brilliance this could be. Experience, class and leadership. I wonder if it's just a coincidence that he played under Ralf
