Anyone else been following the Indian tour of Australia?

Three great matches so far, the third test just ended with India 330-5 after being asked to make 407. Looked on at one point before Pant was out for 97, but just 3 wickets taken on the final day

All set now for the decider, and Rahane's captaincy has turned it around since the first test debacle under Kohli

England due to start in Sri Lanka soon, too

Great victory - the evergreen Jimmy Anderson making the breakthrough. With winning the toss being so important in the sub-continent is that going to be the deciding factor in the next 3 tests?

Winning the toss is only part of it, though. You have to do the right things once you win the toss and Root's captaincy was brilliant on that score.

There was a lot of surprise and, dare I say, criticism, when Root choose to bat on on Day Four without declaring. In hindsight, it was very sensible and contributed to today's quick mopping up of India with fresh, energetic bowling. Even bringing Stokes on just to keep Kohli on his toes was inspired - and it worked when Stokes found that rough patch to keep the ball low.

The team is full of unified character and individual resilience at the minute - from Root with the bat, to the evergreen Jimmy Anderson with the ball, to Leach, who, despite being tonked in the first innings, kept his head and delivered the goods in the second.

India will come back fighting for sure, but we have what it takes to match them and this has the makings of a sensational series.

Re: captaincy

Made a point earlier in the thread about the potential for disruption in Indian unity after Rahane's successful spell as captain Down Under. Kohli's return was of course inevitable and won't be changed, but pundits such as Michael Vaughan have commented along the lines of "India played like a team of individuals"

The togetherness in the England camp is there for all to see, and the player rotation policy seems to be working well with no grumbles

Excellent point. Kohli has captained using his extreme competitiveness and bullish personality to push his team on to the feats they have achieved. Rahane, by all accounts, played on the adversity his team faced to push them to victory in Australia. Kohli may well have had his day as a Test captain. As long as he's in the side, though, it would be awkward to have another captain on the field - and you cannot drop Virat Kohli the player, no way, no how. An interesting dilemma for India.

Lets not forget that India got demolished by Australia in the first test...bowled out for 36. OK captaincy changed but not because of that result.

Beware the wounded tiger.

The teams
India XI: Rohit, Gill, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Pant, Patel, Ashwin, Kuldeep, Ishant, Siraj.

England XI: Burns, Sibley, Lawrence, Root, Stokes, Pope, Foakes, Moeen, Leach, Broad, Stone.

Big changes for us - and Stone getting a spot before Woakes is a gamble, but they've left out Bumrah. Hmmm....

Dream start for Stone with a wicket in his first over. India starting to look comfortable now (48-1) & Stokes limping

It's a concern always lurking with Stokes

Much will depend on our spinners keeping control, need some Moeen magic

At least it's not affecting his slip catching. 85-2

Evens up the session. Kholi in now - this is a big partnership. Quick wicket and the game starts to swing our way

EDIT - Kholi clean bowled second ball by Moeen. Pitch already a turner

Magic

Difficult day in the end primarily due to 1 big partnership and I big ( and brilliant innings). Need to keep it below 350 which if Pant is there for 1 hour will not happen. Unlikely to be a draw with this pitch, so if England can pull this off it will be a much bigger win than the last one

Great day of test cricket (including controversy) but as you say, the balance is in India's favour and tomorrow morning will be crucial with the new ball

Will need our relatively inexperienced top three to make contributions to give the middle order a chance

329 all out. Pant left stranded on 58 not out after cracking 3 sixes this morning. Thank goodness the other 4 batsmen couldn't hang around.

Still a very good score though. 1 hour 15 minutes to survive to lunch, ideally no more than 1 wicket down.

Edit: Burns out 3rd ball !!!

If young Sibley and Lawrence wondered what test cricket would be about when they were growing up, they're finding out now

That's not a proper test match surface. Game decided primarily on the toss of a coin where you get 1 half decent day & then the ball is all over the place. 8 wickets in the first session today ???

I agree. There's "playing in Indian conditions" and then there's a doctored pitch

India would've been prepared to gamble on the toss, having lost the first test. At least it did for Kohli...

Strange watching a game with a real crowd not dubbed!!
Is it to much to hope that we will be watching games here soon?

With appropriate distancing measures, perhaps at cricket during the summer but i doubt we'll see fans at football this season; or maybe very limited attendances right at the very end

Not that there looks to be much 'distancing' going on at Chennai... but it's good to hear the partisan home crowd react, in a reassuringly annoying way

The match situation aside, i love the way cricket throws up quirky stats

India's 329 in the first innings was the highest test score without the fielding side conceding a single extra, beating the previous record of 328 in 1954/55

That's almost as miraculous as scoring 482 to win...

Hes a bell of a 'keeper is Ben Foakes the old one at the end to Broad was probably fatigue and a but of oge rcockyness but he has to play in this team, itll be a fighter battle to get back, time for a Bens miracles.
But going forward after India imo I'd have foakes 7 butler 6. Weve got find space for him and hes ahead of Pope atm. Crawley, Wood,Anderson, Archer and Jonny available for the next test we could see changes.
Leach, Lawrence, Broad Stone(which would be harsh) out? Bairstow, Archer, Jimmy, Wood in? It's a day/nighter so could be fun under the lights

This is the One, I've waited for

Day/night tests handily start at 9am our time too.

Looking forward to this

The pink ball should favour us if we're bowling in the evening

Civilised start time in the UK, and if the game's coming to the boil on Saturday afternoon it'll be no contest between Ahmedabad and Spotland

The pink ball thing doesn't sit right with me when it comes to a test match. A cricket test match is about more than a fancy ball and floodlights. If it works in our favour I might be convinced but just feel saddened that it's light led and TV led, not that I'll mind the viewer friendly coverage in the UK which has been most welcome. Could be worse, have been watching too much BBM Dale. Cricket has to be better, what isn't ?

Tough start with 2 ducks in the first 40 mins. 27-2 and need a good Root/Crawley partnership here. Crawley looks in good nick

3 man pace attack for England which is interesting as India have brought on a spinner 7th over of the match & he has taken a wicket first ball. England obviously don't have confidence in Bess so we have Leach and Root.
