It was!
This test match is already bubbling up nicely, looking like a 5 day draw is unlikely. Great performance from the England bowlers but then India huit back to have us at 5-2.Terrible shot by Hameed in a test match with absolutely no need to play any shot at it
Need Malan & Root to be there in the morning

Shane Warne @ShaneWarne · Sep 7 Congratulations . @imVkohli & the entire Indian team on another terrific win. What you guys have all achieved together over the last 12 months is absolutely magnificent ! Clearly the best test team in the world & that title is thoroughly deserved too !

He's pulling our legs with his spin
NZ have the title in the bag
On another note, worth keeping an eye on Lancs tomoz, chasing an unlikely 444 to beat Notts but made a great start
The weather and flat pitch will help, and records have already tumbled in recent days; Middlesex posted their highest ever total of 676

Absolute classic rear-guard action going on now!
Our first innings made it uphill all the way and we didn't make it, but losing quick wickets - first in the morning and again later on - made an escape unlikely, but 341 is still a great effort
Thinking about the players who were missing: Anderson, Buttler, Livingstone, Parkinson and Mahmood who was injured early doors makes you wonder how we can still even be competitive

I see there must be a new scoring format since the resumption of county cricket. We have drawn 1 & lost one
However the table ( BBC) says played 2, won 0.5, Lost 1.5, drawn 0 6 batting points and 2.5 bowling points. We are third and ahead of a team who won a full game
Is it just to account for the weather?

The batting has been an issue for a while. We started each competition strongly and faded quite dramatically. Davies has looked disinterested since his move was announced too. The middle order has let us down too often and you’re then relying on the tail to dig us out of a hole.
The bowling attack hasn’t looked quite the same since Onions stepped back. He was the perfect cover for Anderson. Parkinson is a world-class bowler but a leg spinner alone cannot salvage an innings. With Mahmood looking like a potential regular international in red and white-ball cricket, too, we need another top-class steamer.
And, yes, missing key internationals or players through call-up and injury hasn’t helped, but, as you also rightly point out, we just don’t have the depth to cover it.
The signing of Salt for next season is a step the right way, but hopefully we can add to that and get some decent overseas players if permitted too - ones that aren’t going to play just a handful of games.
In terms of red ball cricket the batting line up has been painfully underwhelming. The previously derided Bohannan has actually developed into probably Lancs' most reliable batter which says it all. Wells has been okay, but the injury to Jennings has left a massive hole at the top of the order. Vilas has not contributed many runs and Croft/Jones are really depth players who cannot be expected to score runs on a consistent basis. Livingstone, whilst destructive in the white ball games has not really found a happy medium to be much of an impact in the longer form of the game.
The injury to Gleeson has left a massive hole in the seam bowling department. Bailey has been excellent again and Danny Lamb has had to shoulder a massive burden across all formats, but really he is a fourth seamer. Ideally Bailey should only play red ball cricket but injuries and Mahmood's international call ups have have forced Lancashire's hand. Hurt has stepped up and contributed well in the limited overs games, but again he is really depth.
I would agree about Davies not looking interested. He is a decent player, but I am not sure his move will bring him international recognition, although he will probably get to keep full time. One of his problems was that he tended to get injured and Vilas kept to avoid additional pressure on these injuries and he never got the gloves back. I suspect Lavelle will take over behind the stumps full time next year and was partly a reasons why Davies did not get the contract offer he was looking for.
Salt should be a good signing. He can contribute in all three formats and, barring injury, will be available throughout the season. I would like to see an overseas signing that who is available for most of the first class matches, even if it is a fringe international it should add to the depth of the squad. Finn Allen was a good signing for the T20 competition. Hopefully there will be a red ball seamer/top order batter who can be signed for next season. Especially if Covid restrictions ease.
At times I do feel some of the selections and captaincy decisions have been questionable. No frontline spinner last week, Croft bowling the last over against Essex in the Royal London cup.
There are some decent prospects coming through with the likes of Balderston and Lavelle. With Parkinson, Hartley and Morley the spin bowling department is well stocked. Bell, Fielding and Aspinwall are probably a few years behind in terms of the first team. The real gap is in the young seam bowling department. Burrows and Moulton have not really kicked on and Blatherwick has been a stop gap signing, who has not figured for the first team.
I wonder if Vilas will be under a bit of pressure. He is towards the end of his career, probably Lancs' highest paid player, takes up an overseas spot and has not really contributed this season with the bat. Some of his captaincy decisions have also been questionable at times.
To answer DAlien's point. In this final group stage each team plays the other teams that were not in their initial group. Lancs have carried forward half of the total points scored in the games against Yorkshire from the first group stage.

...Nigeriamark's point
But good in-depth analyses from yourself & Fitzo, thanks
And i'd forgotten about Jennings
There were high hopes up to about the mid-point in the season across all formats. Still a chance in the Dog's Breakfast Championship, although it has produced some pretty good cricket at times

If you believe the rumours, Davies has already received international recognition, much to Lancs' annoyance... hence why he's decided to leave. A real shame the way he's been treated by the club, but he's not the first and he presumably won't be the last given the way things are being run at Lancs.

I may have missed something but what international recognition has he received? I have certainly never seen him in an England squad, or even a Lions (A team) one. I suppose he has been a victim of the salary cap and the emergence of Lavelle, as much as anything. Lancs were not prepared to pay him what Warwickshire have and from a squad balance perspective, the money saved replacing Davies with Lavelle frees up wages that can be spent elsewhere, such as the signing of Salt? I remember Jordan Clark going to Surrey to take the next step, which has not really worked out.
I think Gleeson is out of contract as well at the end of the season and with his age and recent injury record I cannot see him being offered another deal.

The rumour doing the rounds was that he was selected for the ODI team to play Pakistan earlier this summer (when we had to rotate pretty much the whole squad) but Lancs wouldn't allow him to play. Not sure why, or how much truth there is to that, but I heard that was the reasoning behind him wanting to leave as much as the money.

Thanks.
I had not heard that. I am not sure how true that could be, as I don't think a county can block an England call up, especially considering the money each county recieves from the ECB.

That's since been changed by the greasy Indian cricket board
Any option to re-schedule the test was also stymied by the IPL starting in a couple of weeks time
Reading a few articles and between the lines a lot of this is due to the IPL and bubble fatigue rather than Covid. If they were 2-1 down in the series and there was no IPL after the tour I suspect they would have played.
I can quite understand that the players are mentally fatigued as they have been here since June, but ultimately none of the playing staff have tested positive so India could fulfil the fixture but they have chosen not to.

And that's how i'm reading the overall picture too
Have no problem with the mental fatigue issue (Ben Stokes has made himself unavailable and rightly so) but as you say, 2-1 down and i think we'd be playing now (weather permitting)
India have played the better cricket overall and deserve to be ahead but the international cricket board need to ensure they don't gain an advantage in the rankings due to this
There's also talk of playing the 'fifth test' next summer, when India are due over here to play some one-dayers but there's apparently room in the schedule. I think that'd be a good outcome
With Yorkshire losing today, next weeks final fixtures mean that 4 teams have a reasonable chance to be champions. If we beat Hampshire we would be champions if we can get 1 more bonus point than Warwickshire, and don't let Notts gain 3 more than us. Just 6.5 points covering the top 4.
