Dire in series overseas this year yet brilliant in the 2 home series Why??

You're not wrong

Half way through day two and it's 444-4

Edit: and here's a stat. The most runs conceded by England spinners in an innings without taking a wicket, currently 62-3-261-0

Would you agree with me that our bowlers are just not that effective away from home or indeed any conditions that don't produce swinging and seaming help?

I'd say our bowlers were on a par with the bowlers of other test sides away from home, with the exception of playing in Abu Dhabi

Jimmy Anderson's opening spell belied the conditions and should've been better rewarded

Thanks for that. Can see your point re other teams playing away from home. We will see how Pakistan bowl when we bat.

Sadly didn't see Jimmy's opening spell yesterday.

I wonder if there is a case for having more Test cricket played on neutral grounds, be interesting to see. England V Austrailia in Kingston, Jamaica would be interesting. What would you think to that D Alien?

The cricket would be interesting but it's never going to happen through choice. It's down to revenue and most Test playing nations can't attract people into the ground to watch their own National team, never mind two neutral countries.

Feel a bit sorry for Rashid. Making his debut bowling on day 1&2 here. Probably the most unfriendly bowling conditions anywhere in the world. If we had won the toss may have had more chance bowling later

He must be gutted at the cheap wickets being given away at the end

Now it;s up to the batters - Any score above 50 for no more than one down will be decent

Just gone down in history as the worst bowling figures on test debut. I like Rashid though, and as he showed after coming back from an early hammering in the one-dayers earlier this year, he's a resilient chap.

To answer 1mark1's question about tests being played in neutral venues, the main issue around revenues has already been highlighted. I'd add that an addition to test cricket might be a world test series, based on points similar to the points gained in county championship matches and keeping the five day format, with the top four countries playing knockout matches - perhaps at neutral venues - over a 4 or 5 year period.

Well played Cook and Moeen, their 4th consecutive 50+ opening partnership (the first 3 were in one-dayers)

Lyth opening against the Aussies, you just knew we were going to be 1 down in no time. A bit like when the opposition get a corner against Dale.

Hold a test World Cup. Take it to a country with guaranteed sunshine, air conditioned stadiums etc.
How about Qatar in 2022?
Not like they would play football in a country that is as warm as that.

The wickets doing nothing but there's still scoreboard pressure to contend with when the opposition score over 500 in the first innings. It's a good effort but they need to keep going until tomorrow tea time. There's a double ton for Cook if he wants it.

This pitch belongs in the 1980s. It's the type of surface that creates the type of cricket that gives the sport the'boring' tag it had successfully shaken off over the past 10 years.
