A Rochdale lad makes it to Home Secretary on 23:04 - May 1 with 5462 views | mingthemerciless | When did he last visit Rochdale ? I got interviewed on Yorkshire St regarding him by a camera team today. " Political lightweight who has been promoted way beyond his ability, at least he'll be in good company with that gang of chancers " was my sound bite. Last time I saw him anywhere near here was in " Zook "in Manchester. He was laughing and joking with the guy who owned the restaurant. The same Asian guy who was in UKIP until they found out he was employing illegal immigrants as chefs ! I know, you couldn't make it up.

Why should he visit Rochdale? His family moved to Bristol when he was a lad, to take up new employment I'm not defending him, just questioning why the usual kneejerk reaction of many locals to someone born here who makes it into a position with a national profile is to ridicule them

My family left my place of birth 50 years ago , I still pop back , maybe it's a primeval desire ! Anyway no one will have this kind of reaction in years to come because we have no maternity unit, so people will most likely not have been born here

To feel like she had to lie about having targets to get rid of illegal immigrants is a kick in the teeth. All illegal immigrants should be kicked out. It’s ILLEGAL.

Of course they should - any sensible nation has to retain control of it's borders, not least to keep out criminals who've evaded the law from whence they came. UK nationals have been murdered by a few of them So why have any target other than ALL illegal immigrants should be removed? In setting a nominal target, it encouraged those in the Home Office with shit for brains that in order to reach it, they might try it on with those who were here perfectly legally but might have some difficulty proving it, with the horrendous consequences we've seen

The target was fake, it was to remove 10% more, but the government simply has no idea who is here

There isnt a major UK party with the backbone to to stop any form of immigration. The home office attitude is that there is no real difference beween legal and illegal immigration because the Government will not make it a priority and put sufficient funds into fixing the non-problem . Politicians have no real perspective of why immigration is a problem, they send their kids to private schools, use private health doctors and dont have their salaries held down by the threat of someone who will work for less, indeed many are getting rich thanks to rising house prices and rents and enforced low wages. The Home Office needs a root and branch clear out as does Parliament. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Immigrants don't decide wage levels - employers do; happy to join your campaign to increase the minimum wage to £20 per hour; then no one will be holding down salaries.

Supply and demand does. If there is a massive increase in unskilled/semi skilled labour then wages are suppressed. A ban on unskilled immigration would after a few years see an increase in wages for low paid people.

Indeed. Trying to skew the market with falsely inflated wages would simply price those jobs out of the market, or require huge government subsidies to employers. If free trade is a good thing, then those countries who can produce goods or provide services at the most affordable level should be allowed to do so, taking factors such as quality into account A minimum wage is required to avoid exploitation, but should remain at a level that would see no employer hesitating to take on staff because of it Countries such as India, China and Brazil have huge populations clamouring for a standard of living through employment and productivity, and many millions are being lifted out of real poverty through capital-based enterprise. To try to retain traditional industries through subsidies in the UK would be to deny them that opportunity. Once their populations reach a certain level of prosperity, we'll benefit through trading with them through those products and services we're best suited to provide (if we can get the hell out of the EU) Those other countries will require educated populations in order to succeed, and that's the best way of ensuring they can see how basic freedoms and rule of law (with all it's difficulties and caveats) can work, through travel and trade contacts Try to skew the market at your peril

Foreign Aid, especially health & education have driven reduction of developing world poverty much more than capitalism. Yes don't skew the market - destroy it. Free Trade is a disaster which has widened inequality , justified imperial invasion & wars. You're right - the minimum wage is set so low it guarantees nothing more than wage slavery. Reducing wealth differentials is the only hope for our divided world. I'm surprised you're still conned by the trickle-down myth through which the vast majority are patronised into accepting the elite minority must have 100 times more wealth than them. I think you're life is worth as much as anyone else's.

I'm conned by nothing, least of all the Foreign Aid canard. How on earth do you think those countries who supply Foreign Aid have found themselves in a position to do so? Through capitalist endeavour and success - that's how None of us need patronising lessons from those who would seek to reproduce the utterly failed attempts at socialism in the 20th century in our current century "Reducing wealth differentials is the only hope for our divided world" Really? So, after several millenia - in fact, all of recorded history - we're now suddenly at risk from wealth differentials? And how do you think history came to be recorded? By free trading between peoples which required transactions to be documented, resulting in trust and the cross-fertilisation of ideas. That you're able to post on a messageboard is entirely down to capitalism and free trade. You should thank your lucky stars you weren't born in a socialist nightmare

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2013/mar/17/aid-trade-reduce-acute-poverty This article would disagree with your comment regarding free trade. One problem is that EU tariffs often make goods from developing countries much more expensive. At least Brexit can help in this regard. https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/the-big-idea/2016/12/23/14062168/history-global Another interesting article as well.

A Rochdale lad makes it to Home Secretary on 13:39 - May 3 with 4308 views | rochdale_ranger | You can bang on about a free market and capitalism as much as you want the truth is we have socialism in this country. Socialism for the very rich and socialism for the poor. The rich get tax breaks and the poor get state hand outs and housing. It’s the working poor, the small business man and the squeezed middle who have to live by the rules that our overlords set for us. Also the notion that places like China and Russia will become more open and freer societies as a result of trade and travel and people being allowed to be good little consumers is nonsense. And as far to the right I am it’s always people on the right that advocate this socialism for the rich. It’s the Blair/Browns and the thatchers of the world that sell the rest of the country out for their mates in the city.

Places such as Russia and China won't become more open due to being allowed a few consumer goods, but because for those states to be successful and competitive in future will require higher standards of education for more of their population - including women, i might add - and the increasing interaction due to trade relationships and travel If that weren't true, why would North Korea seek to keep it's population in the dark and impose the death penalty on anyone trying to escape abroad? It'll be interesting to see how that develops, btw No-one is "banging on" about capitalism. It has many, many faults and no-one is blinkered about it. It's just that the alternatives so far devised have proven to be worse, and basically deny the fundamentals of human nature. What you refer to as socialism in this country is simply the state acting in it's own interests. The prime example of that is state pensions. If workers thought they'd have nothing to live on in retirement, there'd be no incentive to save or do their best throughout their working lives. The same with the NHS, or the healthcare insurance schemes in other developed countries. Both are huge benefits, paid for by the worker/taxpayer either directly or indirectly, without which no modern state could remain competitive

I think history is recorded by the victors - whether hereditary monarchs, military empires or elected dictators - more free killing than free trading. After several millennia we have more anger and hatred between and within peoples. I don't seek to reproduce anything - time for a different way. As a start we could learn the lessons of the Scandanavian countries which are superior in every measure of health, education, equality and happiness.

We can certainly learn from anywhere that tries to put the wellbeing of it's citizens first, whatever form of legislature that takes. Wellbeing is an extremely difficult concept to measure though, and there have been recent moves within Scandanavia to row back on their previous forms of benign state interventions And i'd seriously challenge your inference that there's more anger and hatred between and within peoples. Much of what we hear is due to the exponential increase in news media which loves nothing more than trying to create divisions - see Laura Kuenssberg as a prime example - your inference being from the news media of course There's an huge amount of co-operation and goodwill flowing between people and between peoples that rarely gets reported, otherwise the increasingly complex modern world just wouldn't function. It's easy to forget that, especially when there's an instinctive prejudice against people who're doing better than oneself - which brings me right back to my original post in this thread Good luck to Sajid Javid. He'll be seen as a role model for people of Asian heritage making it to the highest levels in society [Post edited 3 May 2018 16:00]
