Pies 14:26 - Jun 9 with 2760 viewskevinlongfanclub

Hello,

I'm writing a short piece for an online food magazine about Rochdale AFC's pies. I'm looking for someone who can quickly tell me the recent history of Dale's pie provision (i.e. post-2000), and at what point dale switched from Hilton's to Clayton's. Comments below very welcome!

The pies were much better in the last century.

Also, only last night I stumbled across Kevin Long’s no.12 shirt from him time at Dale in 2012. Notable for Balkestein’s name having been removed before Long took the number.

Hiltons and Nicholsons were excellent value, great tasting, good quality pies. The rest you can forget. Currently, the pies on offer are ridiculously overpriced, almost tasteless and very poor value.

If anyone is feeling the need for a reminder of those halcyon days when a tasty pie was de-rigueur at matches, Hiltons pies are still available from Hiltons Bakery in Norden (on the left going out of the village towards Owd Betts).

They do in my local Spar shop too. Two for £2.50. And the shop is making a profit. Tells me that the wholesale price is well below £1

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how Hilton’s pies
Used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those Dale fans dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every pie I’d seen delivered
Bad news at the kiosk
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about the change of pie
Something touched me deep inside
The day the pie supply died
So, bye-bye, beloved Hilton’s Pie
Did my best with the Clayton, but the filling was dry
And them good ol' boys were skimmin’ real sly
Singin', "There’s more crust for us in this pie
There’s more crust for us in this pie"
Did you write the book of grub
And do you have any gravy, God above?
If the menu tells you so?
Now, do you believe that sausage rolls
Can ooh, aah, give us goals?
And can you teach me how to chew real slow?
Well, I know that you're in hock with him
'Cause I saw you fillin’ up yer bin
You all pissed off the fans
Man, you’re now threatening bans
I was a lonely teenage starvin' pup
With a pie obsession and I had saved up
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the pie supply died

Poll: What is it to be then?

I stop at Hilton’s when passing on a regular basis providing I can park. The pies haven’t changed since the seventies and the vanilla slices are lovely all for I think £1.80.It’s just missing the oxo/bovril.It’s great reminiscing the past and if these pies were still being served at dale you would be queuing all match and probably paying £3 a pie.

"Currently, the pies on offer are ridiculously overpriced, almost tasteless and very poor value."

And a tad stale?

Mark Hodkinson in his book "The Overcoat Men", pages 240-2, reprints a letter (of c. 1983?) from a catering volunteer, Allan Rabbich, who maintained Nicholson's pies were better and cheaper than Hilton's.

In the early 1960s, give or take a few years, Dale's programme included an advert in verse form, along the lines of:

Walk to the tea-bar
Straight as a die
Count out your coppers
And ask for a pie.

But I don't recall the pie baker

The supplier of Pies did not matter to Paul Gascoigne allegedly.
Folk lore has it that “he ate all the pies”.

I heard a similar story about someone smuggling in pie and chips from the chippy in their backpack.
