I never knew that they are mandatory but now EFL clubs are voting on whether or not to get rid of the mandatory element. Believe it will be held in June.

I can see that reasoning, but in 20 years' time I'll still be rooting about in my attic* looking for some information on our trip to Oxford rather than Googling what was online at the time.

The football programme and fanzine are two mediums that should never be replaced.

At clubs like Dale, programmes are essential part of a match day. If we keep moving further and further away from tradition, especially when it’s unnecessary, then the game will continue to suffer.

Plus, it’s different at Dale as there are very minimal staffing costs associated with the programme as it’s produced almost entirely by volunteers. The mystifying and frankly nonsensical sales figures have been discussed elsewhere, so there are no reasons why we should see our programme disappear any time soon. After a season of further PR nightmares which have put distance between the club and supporters, I doubt it’s even been considered as an option at Spotland.

I would add to that Rothman's/Sky Sports Football Yearbook, which is rumoured to be ceasing publication this year.

Well interestingly, I read an article about Rothman's and Wisden was held up as an example of something that isn't being discontinued.

The game's gone.

I have the complete collection so probably makes me a bit wealthier in the long term.

They get around it by putting the Programmes/Mags online like they`ve done here in Oz. Matchday Queensland Cup RL and Men of League, that comes out quarterly, are both on line now because of "costs". Don`t be surprised if clubs like Dale adopt this nonsense idea, just another death by a thousand cuts approach to the tradition of the game.

With the rising costs of admission fees and match day costs such as catering, the cost of a programme makes it less attractive. That's not to say it isn't worth the cover price, rather that the money goes on other match day expenses. Whether that be a Golden Gamble ticket, or a brew, the programme will miss out more and more.

I'm not saying his views aren't valid - but if he's 'in meltdown' about it maybe he should run a campaign to make programmes 'non complimentary' ?

'Meltdown' was Fitzo's word.

Winter is simply expressing his views on how yet another of the game's traditions seems to be eroding away, like so many others down the years.

Maybe he will run a campaign in time, but it's got nothing to do with whether he buys his programme or not.

It must all add up though? If clubs are losing money because the rules say they 'have' to provide a matchday programme - just make everyone pay for their copy?
