It is true that helicopters have a slightly higher fatality rate than fixed wing aircraft but if you consider the roles and environments the types operate in then the figures are skewed. Most accidents are during take off and landing and being near the top of a building or oil rig or in a clearing in a forest is always going to be more risky than a 3 mile long runway. A good helicopter pilot should be able to recover from an engine failure by autorotating just as a plane can glide in but the big difference is a transmission failure which tends to make a helicopter uncontrollable. The risks are acceptable for the obvious benefit helicopters provide.
I also believe that helicopter accidents stand out more in our consciousness as they often occur in built up areas (Vauxhall, Glasgow), tourist areas (Grand Canyon) or involve the rich and famous (Leicester owner, Colin McRae, Matthew Harding).
Personally I think helicopters are amazing bits of kit and would love to get in one again.
All that said, a tragic event, particularly with regard to the young children involved. |  |
