Cov have sold out the away end already for St. Mary’s game 13:43 - Dec 3 with 1176 viewsPatfromPoole

Amazing what being top of the League will do…..

Poll: Would you take going down to League 1 if it meant new owners coming in?

They've always had a good support so it's not a surprise, in fact i'd have been surprised if they hadn't sold it out even if they weren't top

They're only 5 places below us in the all-time attendance table. They've had periods when their support has been terrible and others when it's been good. In the 70s, a mate who was a Coventry supporter came with me to a few Saints away games and said that Coventry's support was nowhere near that good. They're currently getting their biggest average home gates for more than 50 years and their away support reflects that. It all depends on results.

I guess some may have given it a miss as it is a 12.30pm kick-off and I believe there are no Cross Country trains as things stand.

But again, when you are winning pretty much every game, people will be busting a gut to go to games.

Just checked out their average attendances over recent years.

17/18 season in League 2 they averaged 9k
22/23 Championship. 19k
25/26 Championship . 29k

Happy days when your a club on the up.

That 17/18 figure is misleading. At around that time Coventry had ownership issues and had to play home fixtures at various stadiums around the midlands.

If you discount those years i think you'll find their attendances aren't that different to ours.

Quite interesting.

They are a club who a few on here have stated have always tended to sell their best players over the last few years, and they haven't tended to spend big on players.

But a good manager seems to make all the difference.

So what, we’ve already sold out Oxford and Brum away, games after Coventry at St Mary’s

I’ve always thought of them as nigh on identical to us really, the difference is they went with SISA and we didn’t.

In terms of support, trophies, leagues they’ve often been in (putting aside when they had their club nearly killed) and even down to the fact their home got flattened in the war, there’s actually a lot more similarities than not.

Saying that their music is a lot f*cking better than ours

John Sillett who managed Coventry 1986-1990 who lead them to a FA Cup win(their only one just like us) was born in Southampton.

Significantly smaller allocations for our 2 away games, as I would expect you to know.

How dare you?!

I’ve just come from a work Xmas party where they were playing the Benny Hill theme.

I didn’t hear them playing The Specials.

You cannot reason a person out of something they were not reasoned into.

You can see every season of their attendances here. Like Pompey, they had a ground capacity of more than 50,000, and like Pompey, it was usually half-empty. I remember their halcyon days in the late 60s/early 70s when they got their biggest home gates, but their away support wasn't very good back then. This season is probably the best away support they've ever had.

Remember their fans coming to the Dell in Div1 in the 80-90's you could have fitted in a mini bus there were so few of them, they only had one 18k+ average home att in 15 seasons in the top divi 80-95.
Support has got better as the teams got worse, its easier to win in the lower leagues

I went, Did anyone go to the game Friday 22 December 2000 when the Specials sang on the pitch before ko?

Just checked this out.
They actually played at the Ricoh arena that season and finished 6th.
Lowest home attendance 6k , highest was against Accrington Stanley 28k.

So what, would have sold 3k easy for Oxford if available

But we are consistently selling out away allocations, most weeks before the game concerned, no different to what Coventry are doing.

More impressive are Ipswich who took over 3,000 to Blackburn last night

My first game was actually against Coventry at the dell, in the 84 season, not a first game you’d forget in a hurry

I was at that game with my missus, and remember us seeing the ska gig before the game.

It was great, I think The Selector and The Beat also played that night.

You keep saying so what for some reason 🤷‍♀️

It will be interesting to see if games sell out so quick when people have stopped bothering about getting sufficient away games in their name for Fratton.

I went to Highfield Road, when Saints lost 1 nil in 97 I think. I also remember beating Coventry 3 1 Ronnie Ecklund and Le Tissier wasn't it that day? Bruce Grobellar let in a terrible goal. Only been their new ground once, again I think we lost. Also remember Le Tissier scoring a cracker in a 1 all draw, in the Souness year.

Always remember a huge game against them, a relegation 6 pointer at the Dell, when we were two nil up. Benali gave the ball away to Peter Ndlovu, who made it 2 each. Strachan kept them up a few times before they went down. Their fans packed out the pubs directly outside the Dell that day and they were a very noisy bunch in the ground that day. It was a big game. We then went on to beat Sunderland away at Roker Park I think and we pulled off another great escape.

Go back a little before that, we beat Coventry at the Dell and big Ron Atkinson kicked off at the sky pundits after the game.
