3 Games In 5 Days 20:23 - Feb 18 with 740 viewsSaintNick

Just seen an article in Facebook mentioning that back in March 1979 Saints played 3 important games in just 5 days, back then sides had a squad of about 15/16 not 24-30 as many in the top two divisions do these days.

On Saturday 17th March we played Nottingham Forest at Wembley in the League cup final, losing 3-2 with Peach and Nick Holmes scoring for us.

Just two days later on Monday the 19th we hosted Arsenal in the FA Cup Quarter final at the Dell drawing 1-1 Austin Hayes getting our goal and then just two later again on Wednesday the 21st we had the replay at Highbury going down 2-0.

It didnt get any better though. on Saturday 24th we went to Bolton in the League and lost 2-0, the following Wednesday 28th March we drew 0-0 at Spurs and then on Saturday 31st March we drew 2-2 with Leeds at the Dell 6 games in just two weeks

I was at Wembley for the League Cup Final and if memory serves the pitch cut up like a plowed field following a week of snow and heavy rain.

Wasn’t Ian Andrews our keeper ? Whoever it was, he looked incredibly nervous and at some point in the first half he let a shot go right through his hands and it went along the goal line before Chris Nicholl came to his rescue and belted the ball away.

David Peach put us in front and then we were outplayed by a very good Forest side in the second half who lead 3-1 before Nick Holmes scored a consolation goal toward the end.

On to Arsenal at the Dell. We were winning easily before our keeper ( Ian Andrews ? ) let in a shot from a mile out which he should have tipped over the bar. For the replay I believe Lawrie dropped Andrews ( can’t remember who replaced him ) and played a clearly unfit Charlie George and we deservedly lost again.

The whole season turned to ashes in the space of 72 hours.

Ironically I seem to remember that Ian Andrews had not conceded a single goal in the six games before his first and suspect only career Wembley appearance.

Poll: Decision Time. Will we make the Playoffs? Simple Yes or No vote.

If you watch the 1979 documentary 'Yesterday's Hero', Saints win that watch against Forest, with Ian McShane coming off the bench to net a late winner

That's a new one on me...

Having read the link I am absolutely astounded it didn't scoop the Oscars that year.

McShane's mullet must have been a shoo-n for Best Supporting Actor.

Thanks, you are absolutely correct.

My memory obviously fades as the years progress regretfully.

Two days after the final Gennoe made another error to gift Arsenal an equaliser at the Dell and he was dropped for the replay at Highbury. he didnt play again that season but regained his place at the start of the next season, but was dropped within a couple of months and never played again, he did have a long career afterwards at Blackburn.

Truth was I thought his timing coming off his line was suspect, something that Ted Bates also thought according to the Lawrie Mcmenemy book Diary of a season, his confidence was shattered at Wembley where nerves had clearly got the better of him

Good to know that at least my memory of the goal Gennoe let in at The Dell chimes with yours Nick.

As I posted earlier he was beaten from a mile out with a shot he should have easily pushed over the bar.

I think it was a cross that he sort of fumbled on to the bar and the Arsenal player headed it in as it dropped off the bar, but I may be wrong, definitely he fumbled it on to the cross bar though and should have caught it or at least put it over

In the 1973/74 season we played 3 important games in 4 days over the Easter weekend as we battled against relegation from Division 1. That was half of the remaining 6 games played within the space of 96 hours.

12 Apr 1974 - West Ham United v Southampton - L 4-1
13 Apr 1974 - Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton - L 3-1
15 Apr 1974 - Southampton v West Ham United - D 1-1

In fact, we had to then play 2 more of the remaining 3 games soon afterwards making it a total of 5 games in 11 days!

20 Apr 1974 - Southampton v Manchester United - D 1-1
22 Apr 1974 - Burnley v Southampton - L 3-0

A 3-0 win away at Everton on the final day was not enough to save us from being relegated as the first team to finish third from bottom under the revised rules that had only been introduced that season. Our replacement in Division 1 was Carlisle United! That didn't exactly work out well, they went straight back down along with Luton & Chelsea with Spurs only staying up by a single point and Arsenal finishing 16th. Top London club in Div 1 that season was QPR.
