I think Jones had most fans support until he opened his mouth, and did some bizarre interviews, especially after poor results.

e.g. being best in Europe statistically and the then saying Wolves going down to 10 men helped Wolves win ?

When Jones insisted he would no longer "compromise" over "certain principles, this was a clear sign he had lost the dressing room.

His comments last year, saying Southampton FC was his only regret, didn't help.

After the Charlton recent game against Stoke, where he told Stoke Fans to F*** off and having a run in with Shawcross, he will probably keep a low profile.

He was the wrong man in the wrong place and certainly at the wrong time, I have no real animosity towards him other than he wasn't a very good manager for us.

On a personal level I don't think he had much of a personality and he was a bit of a screamer at the players in the dressing room and that didn't help him

Directing personal abuse at an individual player or manager because he was once at Southampton is what Pompey fans do and it usually rebounds on them. I'm not sure why Saints fans would want to do the same.

I agree, although there will be the odd player who deserves a bit of stick for the way they left the club, most have done little else wrong other than not played very well, most not for the lack of trying.

For some reason Saints fans always have to have a scapegoat, I have no problem with supporters venting their fury in a manner which addresses the issues, but too often it gets too personal and abusive

It's always been the same, sometimes though scapegoats do turn it around, usually after they have left the club and started scoring in a league somewhere that isn't very good

he hasnt been the only manager thrown under the bus by soft weak minded players who cant or wont take any criticism in the way they perform, weve had a root core of this for some time,if they like you they try if they dont youre screwed. That somehow was never how it worked in my working career.

There's been a lot of chat the last couple of seasons about dressing room unrest, cliques and players performing on the basis of whether they "like" the manager or not.

For me, people are confusing "like" with "respect".

It is not the manager's job to be liked and it is not the player's job to either like the manager, or make him like them.

The manager's job is to dictate on-field strategy, discuss the thinking behind it and "respect" the views of the players if they suggest modifications to it.

The player's job is to "respect" the manager's strategy and implement it to the best of their ability whilst knowing that their opinions will always be given" respect."

In the case of Jones and Still my sense was that none of that key relationship dynamic existed.

In the case of Eckert, I think it does.

I agree that he was not equipped to do the job, a truly shockingly poor appointment. His personality and behavioural characteristics certainly compounded his problems, and the gobbledegook he came out with was guaranteed to cause a loss of respect.

Whilst I didn't want him as manager, he was a running joke with friends of mine who support QPR and Millwall due to his unhinged behaviour, I actually felt some sympathy for him on a human level towards the end as he seemed to be suffering a complete breakdown. Some of his post match interviews were rather bizarre to say the least

He did well at Luton and is doing well at Charlton, as has already been said, wrong manager at the wrong time and I doubt many others could have kept that team up with a strike force of Adam Armstrong and Che Adams

Whilst I want us to beat his team, that's it for me, I'll save my abuse for when Russell Martin returns

I don't think we need to worry about Saints fans abusing him on saturday. He'll get monstered by the Charlton fans.
They really do hate his guts and want him out of their club.
