| Jason Wilcox on 17:12 - Oct 25 with 1229 views | Ifonly | Who could have guessed that the man who appointed Russell Martin isn't very good at recruiting managers? At Man U he's appointed 2 interims and 2 permanent managers and they've all failed. Actually, it might be the fault of the players that Wilcox has recruited, rather than the managers, but either way it comes back to Wilcox. Money hasn't been the problem. Their payroll spend is slightly behind City but well up with the other big spenders and more than twice what Bournemouth spend. | | | |

I don't think Carrick is the main problem after all he got the job based on their finish last season and got them in to the Champions League, but it has to be the players yet again getting above themselves thinking they only have to turn up to collect their £200k a week salaries! Neville sounded thoroughly depressed which I must admit doesn't bother me, but he's correct in all that he says. Absolutely nothing on the pitch!

They appear to be a club in total disarray. Allegedly with debts of £1.5 Billion and a very disgruntled fan base in regard to the owners. I suspect that tomorrow Ratcliffe will solve all their problems by sacking a few more canteen staff at the training ground and telling the players to bring their own packed lunches.

Im happy for him to do that at United, thankfully he didn't do that at Saints, when he arrived we had to build a new squad and he did so, Ryan Manning, Ross Stewart, Shea Charles came in permanently and then he used the loan market well. David Brookes, Flynn Downes, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ryan Fraser & Joe Rothwell all came on loan and played big parts in our Promotion. Our issues back in the Premier League all came because Wilcox had left and had not been replaced

Take your tin hat off, he wasn't at the club when Bazunu arrived in the summer of 2022 "On 20 January 2023, Wilcox was appointed director of football at Southampton. Wilcox joined Southampton in the summer after serving a notice period with City"

Absolutely. Dawn from the canteen will be having a rubbish Christmas meanwhile Gary Neville and all the other money making podcastercoontypes will be feeling sorry for multi millionaires Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

No, our issues in the PL were because we had Russell Martin insisting on playing a style of football that our players just weren't good enough for. The idea that if Wilcox was still around he'd have solved that problem is bizarre. The only way that style of play would have worked is if we'd signed Man City's first team, not their youth team.

If Wilcox had stayed then firstly we wouldn't have signed the dross that we did in the summer of 2024. Secondly he would have counselled Russell Martin about the way he needed to play in the Premier League to get the best out of his players and if Martin hadn't been listening he would have sacked him a lot earlier. The real issue wasn't so much the style of play, but the degree to which it was implemented, with no leeway allowed for the players to clear their lines. Tonda likes his team to play from the back and not hoof it, but he gives his player the freedom to play out if in trouble.

I doubt that Mr Martin takes any counselling from anyone. He's too arrogant. I also doubt that Wilcox would have helped him. He's had a similar situation at Man U with Ruben Amorim. Amorim faced constant criticism that his tactics weren't going to work with Man U's players. If Wilcox advised him to adapt then he was ignored. Wilcox left us before the sh1t hit the fan. But he can't escape responsibility for the squad and coaches he's put together at Man U, at great expense and with disastrous results.

Agreed. Russell Martin was, and is, a narcissistic tvvat of the highest order.
