James Beattie 10:10 - Sep 30 with 2033 viewsSaintNick

James Beattie has been telling the media he didn't want to leave Saints and only went because Harry Redknapp forced him out.

I am not quite so sure that was the case, after all we signed Peter Crouch in the summer of 2004 with the assumption that Beattie was going to leave, indeed Everton & Aston Villa had been chasing him in August 2004 as the BBC reported

"By capturing Beattie, Everton have finally seen off Villa in a two-horse race that began in August."

"But Southampton were determined to keep the big forward and, after rejecting offers from both clubs, they reported Villa to the Premier League in November for allegedly making an illegal approach."

As I remember it Beattie wanted to go and having given Saints good service for 6 years deserved a shot at a big club, for one reason or another the deal could not be done in August and Beattie had to stay.

Redknapp didn't arrive until December after Saints had reported Everton for illegal approaches

I thought Redknapp wanted to sell him to fund highly-successful signings like Bernard, Davenport, Quashie etc etc….

I was in a pub in Shepherd's Bush London in February 2015 having a few drinks before a rock concert at the Empire just up the road. Saints were playing QPR that night, so there were quite a few Saints fans about. I found myself standing next to James Beattie at the bar, he was with a few of the fans. I asked him if he was going to the game and he replied that yes he was, and that he was still a big Saints fan and the he wished he had never left the club. I mentioned his goal at Stamford Bridge, in about the 4th minute, a real screamer - he said yes one of his favourites. I didn't mention that he also put one in his own net in the second half!
But seemed a decent down to earth sort of guy, happy to talk.Never did much when he moved on, though.
