Anyone having a "dry " October? 20:08 - Oct 13 with 24109 viewsdickythorpe

Just got a text from a mate who was. He said took the missus to Asda and we've got some Peroni. After we'd drunk 3 bottles each we suddenly realised we'd forgotten we'd started "dry" October!

Anyone think like me on this? When I was younger tee-total types were by myself frowned upon. wrongly deemed boring, not one of the crowd, killjoys to themselves....But now?...... Those types have my resepct at admiration i.e. it takes some doing to go without a drink!

Not of the same mindset, never really cared if others did or didn't, unless they started imposing their views on me, especially unsolicited. The same goes these days.

Haven't pissed on the upstairs landing for 13 or so months... does that count?

Truthfully, not leaner after recent stint, although when I first lowered my intake after medical issues, I lost 4 stone. Mainly from going form around 20 pints a night, twice a week to nothing. I stopped drinking for 2 years , but will have a drink occasionally in good company/parties (which normally ends up being a slab or a litre of jack) but don't go out into town anymore. I can go several months at a time without a drink have a couple of nights where I blow out, then not touch a drop for a year...liker I am doing now.

I truthfully prefer a reefer or two to unwind, and it helps with my condition. So no don't miss it at all. I never drink because I enjoyed the taste, I drink to get f'cked up and have a laugh, and would rather a cold drink or two unless I'm getting messed up.

Don't want to pry on your medical condition but weed help significantly.

Can't believe how far behind this country is with cannabis laws, compared to what's going on in parts of the USA. All drugs are legal in Portugal also.

No probs, open book. I have something called Chiari Malformia, and syringomyelia. My spinal cord has tethered due to the tonsil of the brain compressing against it after herneating through the base of the skull causing pockets of CSF to cause the tethering and cysts in the spine. It has caused severe problems with my nerves in my hands, arm s,legs and feet (especially left side), as well as occasional problems with my speech and other things.

One of the major problems on top of this is that it caused me to have a constant migraine style headache too, of which I had decoompression surgery (removal of a chunk of the back of my skull, to allow space for CSF to flow and stop further tethering/cysts forming. The surgery wasn't successful at stopping the headaches though and currently on year 5 of a constant headache, this is where the weed helps, as well as with the nerve and speech thing. Tried all manner of pharmaceutical drugs from both specialists and the GP, but it is the only thing that gives me any form of pain relief.

Woah sorry to hear that man. Interesting to hear another account of someone benefiting from the medicinal qualities of cannabis though. About time it's use was properly looked in to.

Not had a smoke for a long time.

Back to the OP, that's what lets us down in our house. A lot of our alcohol intake is down to habit:
- get in from work on a Friday and crack open a bottle
- not playing at home on a Saturday afternoon then nip out for a tea time pint
- share a bottle of white for Sunday brunch

It's almost done without a second thought.

Sorry lads really hope this isn't seen /read as a negative but smoking weed only helps in the short term, I know not from personal experience thankfully, but I know, mate works in mental health and the drug culture and weed works in the short term, but then as the body gets used to it, it craves for more stronger supplements and that mostly leads to more and more harder drugs and even more misery.

Don't do it lads please, just rely on your Doctor.

Max, the same thing occurs with alcohol, smoking, and even more so for prescribed pharmaceuticals. You only have to look at the Oxycontin/barbiturate issues in America at the moment.

Max believe me, my background is in Biology I am firmly aware of the dangers and the benefits. I am not a 15 year old child

Max, talking balls. If you're inclined to have an addictive personality I have no doubt it could lead you down that route. All my mates dabbled with weed back in the day and not one person I know has a heroin problem.

The medicinal properties of cannabis in the treatment of cancer are well known worldwide.

It's why in America 46 states now offer medicinal cannabis in various strains legally through dispensaries. You can also buy it legally in this country in oil form on eBay for example, but this contains just CBD not THC (the chemical that gives you a high). To treat cancer efffectivley you need both components.

More than half of cancer patients in the USA use some form of cannabis in their treatment according to their oncologists.

I use it myself for its anti tumour and cancer cell killing properties. I simply put some oil under my tongue most nights before I go to sleep.

But where it really comes into its own is with chemotherapy,it takes away all the nasty side effects like nausea and loss of apetite, something that can make you really ill. It's helped me breeze through it.

Here's a great explanation of how this drug is so powerful as a cancer treatment.

It's widely known how cannabis oil helps children with epilepsy and Parkinson's patients. It is a wonder why the government suppress its use.

There is a big diffference in using it for medicinal as opposed to recreational purposes.

It's great for many, many illnesses including Alzheimer's disease and diabetes amongst others.

But your point is a good one and it can be abused and dangerous in the wrong hands.

Agreed LB, unscrupulous people getting massively rich on the misery of others was more to the point I was making, I can't argue against its use for medical reasons when there's massive proof that it helps.

The problem is the big pharmaceutical companies will not allow it to compete with their drugs...they cannot patent it because it is a natural product so no money to be made.

So all hospitals can ever offer in this country is chemicals and operations instead of natural products that work.

This is what its up against.

CBD cannabis oil is legally available and has no high.

I recommend the Charlottes Web products. It tastes like olive oil in a dropper on the tongue..simple.

MP Paul Flynn is pushing for the legalisation of medical marijuana. I think his proposed bill got through its first reading in Parliament. Good on him.
