South Africa v England 11:16 - Dec 26 with 13699 viewsexiledclaseboy

First test now. Saffers 97/4 just after lunch. England won the toss. Sam Curran does have a welcome habit of taking wickets in the first over of a spell. Done it twice today.

Rory Burns out of tour with ankle ligament damage, playing football. He was tackled by Joe Root!!

Perhaps Joe should be invited down to Fairwood to give a demonstration.

I didn't even realise England won the toss in the 1st test. Mindblowingly dumb. At least they got it right this time.

England. 262/9

Only one batsman reached 50, Olly Pope 56 Not Out.

P1ss poor batting by England , collapsing once again for 49/5. Great day for SA, but p1ss poor captaincy and bowling for the 10th wicket.

Curran chipping in and Bess helping the seamers.
It'll be close.

Curran will have a long career with England I reckon. Every team needs a Curran.

You’re right, it’s been coming for a while. Doesn’t actually reduce the playing time by all that much though. About 40 overs I think.

I’m not a fan ether but it’s probably going to happen. Not many games go the full five days these days. And it’ll free up more time for the more lucrative white ball games. Which is the real reason.

Indeed.

White ball is where the money is.

Remember watching a New Zealand/Sri Lanker test a couple of years ago and there couldn't have been more than a couple of hundred spectators.

Kohli has a point though, if it does go to four days what's to say they wont try and reduce to three in the future...

It’s only really England, Australia and India that get crowds for test matches. And anywhere England tour. Test cricket won’t disappear but it is evolving. The white ball impact means that four days will be enough for most games.

The spinners are going to be most affected, and Australia's Nathan Lyon is already complaining.

I think they're going to lose 58 overs per Test match, bowling 98 overs per day instead of the usual 90.

1970's ... 75% went into the 5th day

1980's ... 77% went into the 5th day.

1990's ... 69% went into the 5th day.

2000's ... 58% went into the 5th day.

2010's ... 58% went into the 5th day.

But that fifth Test Match at the Oval last Summer wouldn’t have happened if had been a 4 day game.
