I'm curious to know with the limited amount of information you think you have , how did you jump to that conclusion . Perhaps I was brought up in era where I wasn't frightened of my own shadow and to be honest its laughably and disquieting to see how insecure the younger generation are ,its action which offend not words . "Handbags & drama queens ", honestly how sad is that that you feel that someone should be suspended from a job for vocalising what most grown ups thought anyway . I suggest try living in the real world not La La land or is that too offensive to contemplate .

The "real world" you grew up in where sexist and homophobic language was tolerated as part of every day conversation (and national TV broadcast) has been on the way out for a long time. If it helps you feel more secure to imagine it's only a group of frightened and insecure "sissies " (as Risca felt compelled to put it) out there complaining then so be it.

"It's actions which offend not words" fck me that's some seriously ignorant shit pardon my language.

It up to you if you choose to take offence from something that wasn’t necessarily said in an offensive way.

There are lots of things that aren't appropriate to say on TV that are fine with mates, be they sexist, homophobic, even (in some people's opinion) racist etc. Just as there are lots of things that used to be perfectly normal to be heard in a male-dominated industry like football, which shouldn't be. "It was just a bit of banter, we know what he really meant" is a shit excuse for someone failing to meet the standards of the public-facing job. Especially when we've all heard what certain TV personalities really think of women off air.

But by all means keep fantasising about the "ultra sensitive souls spending hours waiting for moments like this". That's the aim of the story in that rag, after all. There's really no good reason to tolerate sexist language on television, except to appeal to sexists who want it to remain normalised for them to use as much as they like, and people terrified that the world is leaving them behind.

Yeah that’s exactly what I think of people who find the term “handbags” insulting.

I call my 7 year old grandaughter a drama queen when she can't get her own way and as for handbags , how insulting is that , to whom ? personally I'd have used the term "pussies " but then the Cats Protection league would have taken umbrage with letters to the Guardian editor .I've never been hurt by being insulted , some unwarranted and justified . You come across as overly sensitive .

I am not the arbiter for what is offensive to everyone. I imagine women might take more offence that I would. Sportswomen in this country hear derogatory terms and sexist language in their jobs all the time. There was a story on BBC Sport the other day about a manager who gets asked if she's there to watch her boyfriend play when she turns up to games. Same with racist and homophobic language, whether I as a straight white male find it offensive is irrelevant. I don't have the same experience of those terms and that language. For me (like many of you I'm sure) it was always "harmless banter". The lad from town who later came out as gay probably has a different memory of it all, but he never kept in touch after school surprise surprise.

It wasn't the first time the commentator had received complaints and he held his hand up to not meeting the standards set him by his employer, so the people complaining about his brief suspension come across as the most easily-offended here imo.

I didn't complain to BBC Radio Lincolnshire about "Tommo", but enough people did to provoke action, and his language by his own admission didn't meet existing standards.

Is a black person being "overly sensitive" if they feel hurt or insulted at being called the n-word, in your opinion? It's just words, which don't count as actions apparently.

The people saying "I was offended" are right. The people saying "no one should be offended because I wasn't" are wrong.
