| MOBO awards tonight on 17:20 - Dec 10 by londonlisa2001 | It’s not based on the colour of the artists. It’s based on the type of music. It only exists because that type of music was being ignored by the mainstream awards at that time. Don’t forget that it’s not that long before the MOBOs that MTV refused to play any ‘black’ music. I’m not a fan of grime either! To me it has no tune, but then that just makes me sound like my grandmother talking about the music I liked when I was a teenager. I do like old school hip hop though. |
I always think MTV get a bad rap (quality punning) for that not playing black music thing. They were more or less a rock only channel back then and there weren’t many black rock stars or bands in the early 80’s. If they didn’t want to play rap or hip hop on their channel then that’s their choice.

Yeah, that’s Bollox that they put out there to pretend they weren’t being racist. The first song on there was that huge rock anthem ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ and they played loads of New Romantic stuff, much of which was British. Loads of British New Romantic bands became huge in the States as a result of them being on MTV all the time.

” Yeah, that’s Bollox that they put out there to pretend they weren’t being racist.” I don’t think that’s true at all. In the ‘80s US college radio was dominated by guitar bands, largely. That’s what got the airplay and clogged up most of the Billboard Charts. MTV’s programming would have been reflecting that, their advertisers would have insisted they air the stuff kids would tune in to watch. If there was colour discrimination it was in favour of green.

I didn't say they attached colour to the artists. They are attaching colour to the styue of music. Attaching colour to anything always causes arguments these days. Can't we just have music regardless of colour/ethnicity or whatever. Can't we just accept that some people make music, some people like it and give awards based on popularity? That's why I referenced Cultural appropriation, this is a definiton, Cultural appropriation is the adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity. Music is an element of culture, I've seen people heavily criticised for wearing clothes from other cultures. Of course I think the idea of CA is silly. Clothes, like music are made ny human beings and we are all human beings, can't we just get on with it without dividng stuff out into black or white origins?

In the past couple of days, there have been renewed articles about Richard Grosvenor Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, the Tory MP for Dorest who lives in a 14,000 thousand acre estate and who has inherited his family’s plantation in Barbados, and failed to declare it on the register of MPs’ interests. It is estimated that 30,000 slaves died on his family’s plantations. He is rich beyond most people’s comprehension (hundreds of properties, farms, businesses, trust funds coming out of his ears) and his wealth was made on the back of slaves. And you are concerned Radio 2 had a day in August to celebrate Martin Luther King on the anniversary of the ‘I have a dream’ speech where it plays music by black singers?

No it’s not racist, same as MTV wasn’t racist in the 80’s. It’s their choice to play what they want and there are more than enough brilliant black artists to enjoy for a day. As long as they don’t play any of that rap crap I’d be happy to sit and listen.

Ok then, I look forward to when they only play music by white artists... which we all know will never happen

Tony Blackburn’s sound of the sixties is usually 100% white but I don’t hear anyone screaming about him being a massive racist.

Blackburn’s show is sixty minutes or so of blokes with dodgy haircuts doing inferior imitations of black artists from the southern US, High. If it’s White you’re after then stay with the Beeb and retune your dial to 90/92 FM. A channel so White it’s ultra pure.
