Cracker this.
Legislation banning advertising of fat/sugary/shite food coming into effect APRIL 2022.

Im thinking why then when our nation is the most obese in Europe.

Campaigners however AGAINT this as the "poorest will be affected the most". Do what?

The poorest eat the biggest killing food out of ignorance not because of cost.

Look around and see 5 yr old boys with virtual beer guts and prepubescant girls with flab where they shouldn't.

We are killing our kids

Does anybody think the banning of advertising will stop lazy parents taking their kids to McDonald’s because they can’t be arsed to cook?

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

There is more to it High. You'll have to look it up.

It is a step though.

Kids like adults are affected by effective advertising and the effects are often subliminal.

One think is certain,we need to do something as we are raising a generation who who have a life expectancy less than that of their parents.

There's something in that .
My mum in law is 93 ,in care home, and just come out of hopital after falling and breaking her nose .Her face is a real mess.

In the past year, she s had 2 mini strokes and her legs are shot to pieces but her body will not give up.

My mum lived to 92 my dad till 94 and both had cancer when they died but passed away because the body basically had enough. The human spirit can plough through many things.

Anyway, have a healthy new year and all you care for.

Getting rid of home economics in schools was a big mistake.

My kids love to cook from scratch, skills learned from me and their mother.

They do occasionally buy a McDonalds etc but not that often.

Amen to that.

You have brought your kids up right.
My mum s place was in the kitchen. My father ensured that and I learned never to do that with a wife of mine. My wife of 41 yrs is a good cook and I try too and often we cook together then eat the contents at the table, something many kids have never done.

Meals for us are almost an inconvenience instead of something to take time over and enjoy.

Wifey and me use Mcd on motorways-for ablutions only.

It is difficult for a lot of people to find time to prepare and cook a proper meal. Gone are the days where a wife would stay at home and a good fresh hearty meal would be ready for the entire family when they came back from work or school. Now everyone is working all hours very often after a lengthy commute and on weird shifts. I know couples who barely see each other because of their work patterns, they’re like ships in the night. When ones coming in from work the other one is going out. I don’t blame people for just wanting to whack a ready meal in and collapse with a glass of wine.

We are talking about those who DO have the time.

As regards (hard) working couples ,it is entirely possible to eat healthily if some thought and preparation are given. We are talking about our most important function.Health. Nothing is more important than that .

In days gone by women were stuck at home but had none of the appliances to make life easier. I can still recall my mother' s mum looking after 5 with no washing machine nor hot water on tap. Look around any 50s photo of working class Swansea and the many Sunday School trips to wherever and you will see just how stark the contrast is between kids then and now.

Anyway, a decent exchange.. Thanks

I agree. This isn't 1950s Britain. Quite often, both parents have to work just to pay the bills. The nuclear family has had it's day too.

Contro.

It is about planning. First, let's not forget you can have shopping delivered to your door whereas in times gone by the women walked to the shops and carted home food in bags.

Our ,or my ,parents generation had zero time saving appliances we see in our kitchens.

Throw in no central heating and bathrooms and water having to be brought into a tin bath.

Women those days had it very hard indeed and reason why they looked well older than their years.

I have a sepia photo of my gran holding me in 1952 at Caswell. I wish I could show it on here but she was 50 at the time and looked 75 by today' standards. Shot to pieces by hard work. It is why life expectancy in areas like Wales ,the North and Scotland was so low.

We seem to be making excuses for obesity and that in itself is lethal.

Finally, it doesnt help to see schools playing fields sold off as well as physical activity nosediving. Kids are driven a few hundred yards to school whereas we walked ,miles in some cases.
I feel for kids today a there is more pressure on them and far less unskilled jobs for the less able

All it takes is a bit of planning.

We often bung stuff in the slow cooker so that we have a meal ready for when we get home.

You can make a cracking chilli from scratch in under 30 minutes, it works out a lot cheaper than buying ready meals too, what isn’t used can be frozen for another day.

Batch cooking is very popular these days, cook a big batch and freeze or chill individual portions.

Veg is so cheap these days.

Soups and stews are also easy and quick, make them with whatever you have at home.

I'm aware of all that mate. I was a kid all through the 60s. No central heating, ice on the inside of the windows, outside bog, no hot water, a tin bath etc, got the t shirt.

The difference being, Father went to work and earned just enough to keep us all in the essentials, plus a holiday once a year. Thesedays a lot more women are in the workplace, so wages have stagnated because of the additional numbers in the workplace

Society itself has changed not people. Both parents have to work these days, rent, council tax, all these things are a big drag on resources, . As for single mothers, there are lot's of them thesedays - I believe it's a lot to do with feckless selfish young men who don't want the responsibility and still want the single mans lifestyle.

Rant over, for now anyway.

Indeed, 2 great investments, my slow cooker and soup maker. Cheap as chips and food is healthy, nutritious and cheap.

They are, but it's a lot of junk food. fruit and veg are quite cheap now, but kids don't want that, unless they are given it from an early age. Also tinned food has much lower nutritional value than fresh food.

Tinned food has a similar nutritional value to fresh but obviously with tinned there’s very often more salt.

I read much claptrap about not being able to put food on the table.

Anyone can go to an Aldi store and buy a basket load of vegetables and fruit .Its what we should be eating and ,as you say, show a pomergranate ,a mango ,some bilberries to many kids and they recoil as they are so used to sugar being used in food. They have been brought up that way and they see TV ads glorying all kinds of killer foods.

Internet is available for millions of pieces of advice of how to even make a nourishing soup for basically buggerall.

Even a casserole is easy to prepare then both parents can go to work ! and come home and quickly reheat. But those families are often not the ones who eat shyte and feed it to kids. adly, many single mums spend time of their phone either taking selfies or exchanging umittigated drivel with their chums. Its a huge social issue for us and no government yet has had the guts to take it on and get stuck into the companies that take advantage of people's sloth.

And don't chuck away that turkey carcase folks.

My turkey and beef leftovers are now in curries.

The problem a lot of people lack in the kitchen is confidence.

Show someone some herbs and spices and they wouldn’t have a clue.

I’m no Gordon or Jamie etc but can put a different meal on the table every day of the week, it’s all about having a go, its amazing how easy cooking is if people actually had a go.

I love stuff cooked in the slow cooker, normally soups, after reading this earlier before I got home, had some time to kill and googled slow cooker recipes, I never realised how much you can cook in them, I thought it was just soups..

If you like your meat tender then its the slow cooker all the way. Put joints of beef and gammon in for 8 - 10 hrs on low with real ale or cider and they just fall apart. Christmas day turkey was in the slow cooker, stunning it was fair play.

Agree, I do like the meat to fall apart, nice and tender, unfortunately the missis does the cooking and I don't think she's a great fan of leaving it on for hours, usually it's tough as hell

Although that's just the way I like it compared it to the rest of the family, I can't even chew the meat, and by the time I'm still chewing, I look down and the rest of the family's food has gone. :)
