Knighthood by all accounts.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

*Sigh*

If it was purely down to the car Bottas would finish second every race. He doesn't. Notwithstanding the facts that A - The best drivers usually end up in the best cars anyway, and B - driver input is often one of the reasons the cars end up the best, much as Ferrari did under Schumacher. Almost exactly like that in fact. A year or two of planning and then dominance.

Ferrari have had a car capable of winning the Championship in two out of the last four seasons. They haven't done so because Hamilton has ruined Vettel.

The true mark of a drivers ability though is in the wet. A car's superiority means nothing if you can't keep it on the track. There's simply nobody in the current field able to touch him when the rain comes down.

I’ve given up, people are a bit dense when it comes to Motorsport.

Motor port eh?
How come the great motorcyclists are ignored.

As regards what is "sport",millions would argue snooker and darts are pastimes and nothing to do with sport at all.

You can also throw in horse riding or "racing" as it's refered to. In my eyes,no sport whatsoever simply a business and one where the very rich con and screw the poorer making them think they'll get something for nothing;the worst mindset of mankind .

Scandalous that John Surtees was never knighted, Perch. Lovely gentleman too.

Indeed. What Surtees did will never be done again.I thought Rossi might however.,who is for me the greatest motor cyclist of all time and in fact of any motorised sport. The man is a true legend . TT/Track and Formula 1. Champ is every one.Nobody comes close really.

And bike racing far greater a spectacle with often real passing and repassing

HNY mate and hope to chew the cud for some time yet

Happy new year to you and yours Perch.

Have to admit, despite being a Motorsport fanatic, I’ve never really got into Moto GP...even though I’ve enjoyed races that I’ve watched. It is a fantastic spectacle. My job means that I’m quite involved with some of the Motorsport/MotoGP guys, funnily enough my colleague was on the podium for the last MotoGP race collecting the constructors trophy.

I love my cars but never really been into bikes. I’ve been brought up to stay away from them due to previous deaths in the family on 2 wheels. I’ve started to get the urge for them though. I can imagine that there’s no feeling like taking a bike around the beacons in the summer.

Swerve.
U2 Sir.

Speedway was my sport but it's highly specialised and expenive. You need good and loyal sponsors to break even.If you can ,there is or was a good living to be made.

It is very exciting and also highly dangerous.

50 mph broadside around a bend is one thing but you have 3 other mad jockeys aiming for the same part of the track as you and it's very very hairy.

The top riders,Mauger,Olsen,Penhall,Collins Nielsen were very very hard men.

And on public roads, sadly I have lost several friends.

I sold my last road bike about 6 years ago and still miss it .

lol when red bull had the best team and Car Vettol kept winning year after year, as many say there is not much between a lot of the drivers the one who gets the best team and best car will win most of the time, Hamilton drives for the best team and has the car best car and has done so for a number of years now, he could not win when Vettol was in the prime car could he, Vettol beat him for 4 years on the trot mun.

No most of the time the driver in the best car wins, spin it as much as you like, put Hamilton in a lower grade car and he does not win simple really, crap sport to be honest watching cars drive around in circles and knowing the one with the best car normally will win is so boring but there you go.

Surfing is a sport so why not. Skill in abundance and spectacular too.

Good to see JohnMcGuiness getting an MBE albeit 5 years late.Only Joey beats him.

Check him out and read about him.

Met him once in IOM at a pre tournament do and the most approachable ,straight talking ,humble sportsman. Massively popular in the sport, and eclipsed only by Joey.

Back to Lewis, Sky are showing the Brazilian GP now, when he won his first title.

The race when he came in for new wet tyres a couple of laps from the end, Massa's family started celebrating when he crossed the line to win the race and the title in front of a home crowd before Hamilton passed a car on slicks to get enough points to win the title a couple of corners before the line.

Hamilton is no doubt very good but those not wanting a Knighthood for him are basically envious ,jealous clowns .Froome live Monaco and Jackie Stewart Switzerland -didnt top them being honoured.

We are so hypocritical a a nation.

Back to McGuinness...Don't try this at home

There's still plenty of hilarious conspiracy theorists that are adamant that Timo Glock (the guy he passed on the last corner of the last lap for the championship) slowed down intentionally to allow Hamilton to win. Why? No idea.

That was an epic end to the season. Shame that Abu Dhabi pay big money to host the final race of the season at possibly the most boring circuit on the calendar. Final race should be at Brazil or (more traditionally) Suzuka.

or even better, swap the season around and make them race at tracks during the winter, not so enjoyable for the fans but the racing will be much better. Could you imagine racing at Silverstone in January

If a spelling mistake proves your point it just shows how dumb you are, just answer the question if it is not the driver of the best car that wins the races how was the great Hamilton beaten by Vettel to the title for four years on the trot, it is because Vettel had the best team and car at that time you dimwit.

Nah, it just shows that you don’t know too much about the people we’re talking about that’s all.

Just to reiterate some of what Winston said...

Of course the fastest car gives the best opportunity to win. These teams are far more than just the driver, but at the end of the day, they are turning the wheel. For 2 of Hamilton’s recent championships, you could argue that Vettel had a better car...Ferrari were using some engine trickery (now banned) meaning that Hamilton did an excellent job to win in the end.

The fastest drivers always end up at the sharp end. Hamilton was somewhat fortunate to start his career with a top team, but he handled the pressure brilliantly and ended up beating a 2 time champion team mate who is regarded as one of the best of all time. That just doesn’t happen in F1.

I’m far from a Hamilton fanboy but to disregard Hamilton’s achievements as a sportsman just because he’s had a great car for the last 6 years or so is silly. Vettel won his first championship in a car that wasn’t dominant at all, at the last race of the season, by the way. He very nearly threw away another one of his championships too.

Hamilton is ONE OF the greatest racing drivers of all time, period. He has done some things that no other driver has ever done in the sport. He was 1 point from winning the championship in his debut season in a car that was equal with the Ferrari.

So to answer your question, no, it is not ALWAYS the driver in the fastest car that wins. There’s more to it than that...that is a very simplistic view to take.

It might sound fun on paper but in reality it would be a mess. The cars and tyres would be so far out of their working range if they showed up at an icey Silverstone. I’ve skidded my way out of a muddy Silverstone field many, many times...it’s not fun. Same at Spa. These circuits are built for the summer unfortunately...although tracks are becoming more central (and crap) these days. Silverstone in 2000 was held in April and it was bloody awful. It’s bad enough in July!

It happened at Istanbul this year (also due to a new track surface) and it’s great fun for a while, but it does start to look like a bit of a farce.

As you say the fastest car gives the best opportunity to win that is fact and its good you can now accept that, all the rest is speculation and personal opinion on your part, Hamilton impressed the top team enough to take him as there number one granted, however there are at least 5 other drivers on a par with him who would probably be able to do what he has done if they had the resources and most importantly the quality of car he gets to drive, what we have to call real dominant sportsmen come from sports like Tennis, Boxing Mma Athletics etc they rely on there own abilities and not having something that is better than what there opponents have to help them win.
