| Jordan Garrick watch on 17:58 - Feb 25 by ReslovenSwan1 | He signed at 16 in the summer of his 17th birthday and spent 6 seasons at Swansea honing his skills. If he played in the u18 initially. Garrick came to Swansea as a raw rugby league player with pace and a good athlete with no proper football training. He did not arrive as a rounded footballer. Having gone through the Swansea processing he is now finding his way in the physical battles on league 1. It is you that devalues the Swansea academy system which is a bit odd for a flag waving Cymro. The academy gives great opportunies for scores of 9 year old local kids. The Swansea u18s had a number of 16-17 year old s with African names earlier this week plus Bony s lad who conceiveably could be elligible to play for Wales. If the local kids are not good enough then it is sad. The evidence is that they are good enough. [Post edited 25 Feb 2021 17:59]

Of course they are good enough. Ben, Joey, Jazz, Rodon, Cabango, and Roberts tell you that. It just needs the hard work. The availability of Premier League money to attract McBurnie, James, Grimes, and Garrick (also see Kenji) is getting lucky. No Swans coaches have to work hard to unearth the player - you and i could run the academy with a big fat cheque book. The hard work has already been done elsewhere. Plus most of the bought in players never make our first team and are never sold for money. One player we signed from Man City when we were prem was with TNS 12 months later. Thats some difference. The many players from Scotland was just weird. About 15 signed and only really Fulton made the team. Anyway, our current finances and brilliant young manager will mean no more mass signings below first team level - and that can only be good for our local lads. I am surprised you can’t see that, its obvious ?

McBurnie was 19 when we signed him, had already played in the football league, and spent as much time out on loan as he did playing with our u23s. He'd have come through at Bradford or somewhere else, ridiculous to say he only made it because of us. DJ and Garrick joined much earlier but Hull kicked up a fuss with DJ's registration and tribunal because they knew they were on to a winner. Very few players' journeys start at 16.

You create a negative argument with lines like "most of the bought in players never make our first team and are never sold for money". This is obvious. 5 or 6 players cme from Scotland a two hit the big time Fulton and Kingsley. Kingsey was sold for £1.5m and this more than covered all the wages and expenses of the others . Players like Bioti Biabi and Adam King had qualitites but did not kick on and play in Scotland. Tom Holland, Ryan Blair were given thier chance and did not kick on while George Byers did kick on. These players di not block local players like Keiran Evans, Mason Jones Thomas from developing they were alos given room to develop before beig realeased. Cullen, Ollie Coope and Brandon Cooper came throught this group. Swansea and south west Wales has not profduced a 6ft + centre forward like Sam Surrrige or Vicktor Goykeres for decades .

Yeah agreed with Oli. He did come on leaps and bounds in the following 2 years though, and our coaching team has to take huge credit for that.

Timeline's a little off here. Keiran, Mason, Brandon etc. were in the age groups that came after the recruited players you mentioned, and didn't break through into regular u23s football until most had gone and we were relegated. Biabi, Blair, Maric, Tyler Reid etc. stood more directly in the path of Jack Evans (didn't get a real run of games until the Scots were all on loan), Aaron Lewis (forced to play left back more often than not to accommodate Reid), and Liam Cullen (stuck out on the wing while Biabi and Baker-Richardson played at 9). There were some tidy u18s midfield players we never got to see get a run in the u23s because of policy that saw Ryan Blair (now 25) handed a 3.5 year contract when he was a few weeks shy of 20.

Yes two different paths. Unfortunately for Swans, the nicking of other peoples hard work is an option that was tied to the Premier leagues pot of gold. You cant swagger around Scotland as billy big bollix without a pot to ... So its back to the local lads and the hours and hours of hard work to create the Roberts, Rodons, Allens, Davies, Richards, and Cabangos. And thats how you really judge an Academy. What a great opportunity for our young coaches and players alike. For every McBurnie and James, there have been 10 bed blockers brought in for God knows what reason .... and retained for years and years, like Gorre and Zabret. Any remaining lazy academy coaches will hate this reality check. Everyone else should welcome it. Very few playees should be brought in under first team level, not none - but few.

I totally agree, the new academy structure should see more local lads in the mix, but the money made from James and McBurnnie, albeit unknown when they signed only propped up the club, not the academy as it was, that’s my real complaint.

KK lives in fake world where Swansea and south Wales have an unlimited supply of top quality talent. That ended in the John Charles era. John Hartson was the last quality forward from the city of Swansea and that was 30 years ago. The area has not matched Bioti Biaabi or Courtney Baker Richardson lest alone big John. People sniffed at Sam Surridge and Goykeres but as 6ft plus centre forwards they remains head and shoulders better than anything produced by Swansea in 20 years. All big strong lads end up as centre backs. It is the very nature of academies that not all can get throught to the first team 0.5% is is said 1 in 200. Under the thinking of Killkenny imported talent with 'half a chance' will be replaced by local talent with 'no chance'. Kenji Gorre could do a decent job fr Swansea and was better than Asoro for instance. It sounds like the old south Wales failed economics of fake jobs to keep local unemployment down. I would fprefer 2 or 3 Jamiaican sprinters to be mentored and coached in south Wales like Rhian Sterling.

If you're going to compare our local players to bought-in talent at least bring up Alex Samuel who played a big part in getting Wycombe promoted last season. We bought in a few speedsters who've come to nothing in recent years as well. Barrow and Asoro both big money down the drain.

Welsh 6ft 2" stikers. Welsh born and bread. They do not exist. Vokes is the best but n Anglo. I never said Biabbi and CBR were great players. They are simply streets ahead of anything local sadly. I reckon Jason Bowen was the best forward who came throught the ranks another short speedster, He is like Samuel. Hedges is quite physical but still classe as a winger.

Give it up fella. You cant give the Academy full credit when we produce a player. And then blame the local youngsters when the Academy produces nobody. In your mind the Academy can never ever be questioned. I could equally asked why the Academy/CoE has failed to produce a centre forward ? You can add keepers to that list. I dont want a lumbering 6ft 2 centre forward to be honest, give me a mobile modern striker like Aguerro or Saurez any day of the week. I guess we should all be grateful you are not running the Academy, at least thats something.

Scotland , Graham, Michu, Bony, Gomis. All strong all 6ft plus all skillfull. These players were vital to the bexst time the club ever had. I give the Academy lots of credit. I am expalining to you local talent alone cannot do the job. Swasnea city does not produce forwards and certainly not big athletic forwards. These have to come from elsewhere.

Are you saying that if we had Aguerro ansd/or Suarez then somehow thats not goood enough ? What ? I am explaining to you that you cant bring in players from God knows where without Premiership cash. That option has gone. Deceased. It is no more. You just give up and cop out. I am saying to the Academy .. look harder, work harder, find the players we need. You believe in luck, i believe in hard work. This will amaze you as well, some Academies are better than others, and some academy coaches are better than others. This is a falsehood - "I am explaining to you that you cant bring in players from God knows where without Premiership cash. That option has gone. Deceased. It is no more". The club simply has to focus more and not have a wide and costly scouting sytem. The club now has strong links wih Chelsea and Man city who have dozens of top prospects they cannot use. If Swansea wait for the next john Hartson from local resources it could be a very long wait. Mr Allen might be asking why Swansea produced 10, 6 ft+ centre backs but not one 6ft+ centre forward. Allens reforms will not bear fruit for 8-10 years. This is exactly what Swansea need right now. [Post edited 28 Feb 2021 18:29]

A poster on another forum suggested the loan to Swindon was a one way ticket. This would be the shame if true as he is only now getting a consistent run of games and staying fit with the hamstrings that can affect sprinters. 4 games 1 goal two assists.

John Hartson was targeted by Luton from a very early age when he was playing in the junior league for Winch Wen. He had a great mentor, coach, trainer and manager in his father Cyril, who over the years was also a very good centre forward.
