Being proud of your country 14:07 - Feb 15 with 4899 viewsonehunglow

Should we be and if so why?

Countries are formed by lines drawn on a map by politicians often with disastrous results, like the Balkans.

If we live in a fascist/communist country or one with a murderous past-like Turkey for example, why should anyone be proud

Consider what we've given to the world in terms of inventions . development discoveries i'd say we had a lot to be proud of , maybe we'll get it back one day .I'd still rather be here than anywhere else all the same.

We weren't the first with radar. Even during ww2, the Germans were ahead of us in it's development, we just used it better

Maybe someone should tell Sir Robert Watson-Watt that?

https://www.aps.org/publicatio

The Germans stopped developing RADAR in 1940 apparently because they thought they'd nearly won, bu the time they realised their mistake it was too late to catch up.
The big breakthrough came in 1939 when scientists at Birmingham University invented the cavity magnetron oscillator which we shared with the USA

Germans thought our radar was rudimentary in comparison to theirs, but they couldn't believe how well we used it

The Freya radar was more advanced than its British counterpart, Chain Home. Freya operated on a 1.2 m (3.9 ft) wavelength (250 MHz) while Chain Home used 12 m. This allowed Freya to use a much smaller antenna system, one that was easier to rotate, move and position. It also offered higher resolution, allowing it to detect smaller targets. Because of its complex design, only eight Freya stations were operational when the war started, resulting in large gaps between the covered areas. The British Chain Home radar, although less advanced and more prone to errors, was simpler, which meant that the complete Chain Home network was in place in time for the Battle of Britain.

Our radar masts (Chain Home) because it was such a simple system they were quickly repaired or replaced if bombed, it stretched all the way from Orkney down to the South coast.
In 1940 the German system was better but we improved after they had given up. Here's something, if you can be bothered!

Yes, the British use and application of radar was better than the Germans, but the Germans actually had better more advanced equipment and technology.

Radar was used as rough guide, the observer corps then had to fill in the details; how many, what height, what aircraft etc.

Technologically speaking, the Germans were far better in many areas. It's ascary thought but if Hitler hadn't invaded Russia and concentrated on beating us first he may have won the war. With the UK/GB beaten the Americans had no staging post, with nowhere to launch missions from (to stop them) Germany probably would have gotten Nukes first and that would have been it. With Nukes he would have beaten Russia too and we'd all be speaking German now.

One bad decision probably changed everything.

I've read that many modern day Germans are scared to be proud of their country and still embarrassed about the 2 world wars and their part in them.

Germany was never economically on a total war footing like the UK was. NAZI policy didn't encourage women into the workplace. Technically they were superior. Despite the nostalgia the me109 was superior to the spitfire in many ways and their battleships were a match for anything the RN had. They did tend to over engineer though. their weapons and even uniforms were over elaborated which was wasteful.

It was a huge mistake to turn on Russia, although it nearly worked. The idea was to defeat the Russians, steal their resources and land before the Americans joined in the conflict.

If Britain had fallen The Uk would have been a staging point for the invasion of the US, That with the British and French navies would have been used to attack the American mainland. German U boats were already attacking US shipping at will and as the US only had a small fleet in the Atlantic and would have been tied up with the Japs in the Pacific, it would have been feasible to overrun the major cities on the east coast Britain was Americas front line in the conflict, so in effect we saved the Yanks not the other way around.

It's all conjecture of course, but it was believed to be a possibility at the time

Given the fact that these Nazi fascists had Concentration Camps, then the use of the German language should not be your biggest fear.

German ? english ? Similar languages i think you may find..... ‘the German and English languages are considered to be members of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family, meaning they are still closely related today’.

At least Welsh would have survived against all the odds, we have the experience required after all.

You couldn't invade the USA by sea from the UK, it's a massive distance and the size of the fleet would have made it an easy target long before it got near their coast, they learned from Pearl Harbour too.

I'm not sure the Me 109 was better, the Spitfire had a tighter turning circle which was a big advantage in a dogfight. The Me could dive faster so was good at running away though. The Spitfire was faster above 20,000 feet, they were quite closely matched really, I think it came down to the pilots.

I'm stopping now, derailed the thread again, sorry.

The US had very little defences on the east coast, as could be seen by the U Boats attacking US shipping with ease. A fleet would have got to the US with air and submarine cover, US troops were transported directly to N Africa from the states during operation torch. At the time, the US only had a poorly trained army of about 100k, certainly no match for the Germans

The me109 was slightly faster, had fuel injection and not a carb, so no stalling , and it had greater fire power, it had cannons instead of machine guns and could fire for longer than the spitfire

Yes but the Spits tighter turning circle meant the Me couldn't bring it's firepower to bear unless they surprised the Spitfires. That was a tactic they used, diving out of the sun, if it didn't succeed the Spits usually did better in a dogfight.

The US army was much bigger than 100k. When Hitler invaded Russia in 1941 it was nearly 1.5 million, a year later it was over 3 miilion and doubled again in the next year. By the end of Torch the US army was nearly 7 million strong.

Germany wouldn't have had the naval capability to launch an invasion of the USA, it couldn't have transported enough men across the Atlantic. If Brtain had fallen all our troops would have beenn ordered to try and get to the USA, all our navy would have gone there and they would have been enough to stop an invasion.
The USa lost most of it's battleships at Pearlt but it's aircraft carriers escaped that. The USA military industrial complex went into overdrive after Pearl. in 1941 the US navy had around 700ships, by 1945 it had over 6000 ships and 3 million men. In 41 they also had over 2000 fighter aircraft which rose to over 5000 in 42 and nearly 12000 in 43.

If Germany was to beat the USA it needed nukes, Hitler had recognised that which is why Germany put so much into the V weapons, they wanted an ICBM, if they'd got it....well who knows. What we do know is the bombing of Peenemunde, the attack on Rjukan in Telemark and other operations helped delay Nazi plans long enough for the Allies to overwhelm Germany.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
