Firebreak - That was Starmer's call.

Opening up from firebreak was a free for all and a disaster, that led us to needing to lockdown again before England. We were in their equivalent infection level of Tier 4.

We have more infections until very recently and Deaths than England per capita. Far, far more than Scotland and Northern Ireland. It's not a competition.

It's not by accident that cases have fallen - it's by a large slice of luck. We had to go in to lockdown before the Kent variant became dominant here.

You don't know what facts and evidence are.

Drakeford is making a huge hash of taking us out of lockdown again. The man is an incompetent, dithering fool.

Had the courage? Why did he write to Bojo TWICE before taking action over the borders?

Why did he go along with the Christmas bubble plan?

Why did he hold back vaccines but then change his mind after a public outcry?

Why was the firebreak only 2 weeks when we plainly needed longer?

Bojo is a useless steming pile of rubbish but it doesn''t mean Drakeford has been good.

He tried to get Bojo as you call him to act. He didnt. He therefore decided to act. You fail to recognise he doesnt have powers to close borders. We would have to be an independent country to do that. I assume you would welcome that then.

As far as Christmas is concerned nearly everyone supported the policy for all to act together. So many called for it and when it became clear that there was need for a stricter policy he did so.

As far the short firebreak is concerned it worked. The figures dropped. Would a longer period have been better. Possibly but the other countries had longer firebreaks and it hasnt worked there. For the last 2 months the daily rates in Wales have been the lowest in the UK.

The issue regarding vaccines in false. Throughout the time the vaccine has been made available it was made clear that the Pfizer vaccine was not going to be given in care homes or surgeries. That was the reason for the slowness of the initial roll out and was actually said by Swansea Bay Health Board.

That's not what Gething said,

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/

To quote him directly,

He said: "I don't think it is right for us to institute a set of border controls trying to prevent people from elsewhere visiting Wales.

"I think that would lead us into all sorts of anomalous and difficult territory, but I do think that as we act to prevent people who live in hotspots in Wales from travelling to England and taking the risk of the virus with them. So the Prime Minister in his capacity as the Prime Minister of England in this case ought to do the same to prevent people from English hotspots from travelling elsewhere in England to Wales or other parts of the United Kingdom because of the risk that that undoubtedly poses.

So basically he wanted Bojo to do something in England he didn't think it was right for Wales to do. Maybe he wanted to be able to blame Bojo?

The short firebreak, yes the figures dropped, they'd have dropped more if it had been longer. Maybe if he hadn't made the rules a suggestion and told people they wouldn't be enforced the figures would have been even better.

The vaccines again, Drakeford is accused by his own words,

https://www.theguardian.com/uk

Christmas, the science said it was a bad idea. Yes people called for it and our drippy politicians took the popular choice instead of the right one, by politicians I mean all of them, Bojo, Drakeford, Sturgeon, they are all guilty of populism and imagine this story multiplied thousands of times,

It's being different for the sake of being different.

This entire non-essential selling in supermarkets thing is crazy - any pent up demand to buy non-essential items is now going to be satisfied in those three weeks before other shops can open. It undermines the entire exercise, not that there was any sense in it anyway.

All non essential shops must open at the same time. You must wonder why supermarkets get a three week head start on selling non essential goods? Wonder if Drakeford and his cabal have shares in supermarkets.

Quote from the interview with Drakeford in today's WOL regarding gyms:-

"The evidence I have been reading says that gyms that are well ventilated, have large premises and are modern have risks which are at the modest end under spectrum. If they are carefully run the risks can be mitigated.

Gyms that are small, a bit old-fashioned, have not much ventilation and lots of people close by one another have risks that are likely to be significantly greater. I want to use the weeks ahead to talk with our environmental health officers and the sector to work out if we can have a more differentiated approach to reopening gyms rather than it being all or nothing."

This is exactly what I said should have been the case across the board when we came out of lockdown last summer. Instead they all opened with no guidance. He is only now considering a differentiated approach.

The bloke is a clown.

Left and right exchanging blows, can you not see it's the left AND the right that's the problem.

The worrying thing for me is that anyone agrees with what Drakeford is doing, is sealing their fate and also others, come September, you can just see that another lockdown is coming most prob sep/october.

I really feel is that if EVERYONE said ferk this, we are going back to normal, there would be no increase in deaths.

IMO the vaccine has done nothing to prevent cases and deaths, it's just convenient timing they rushed to vaccinate people when they knew the normal flu season was ending.

Global pandemic they say, well honest I would not have known it, unless it was rammed down my throat constantly by the news..

Good News Cat.
You are not right wing. I can confirm that to be the case.

I am ,as regards some matters, but virtually communist style left on others, whuch is why the likes of Builthy, taxy et al are so misled and misinformed.

We live in an age where politicians cannot be trusted.People who cannot see that are deluded.
I have lived through times where a labour government has been eaten from within by hard left.Whole cities like Liverpool destroyed becoming a land of bin dippers as described on here by people from equally poor towns.Working class united-my'rse. they are.As selfcentred ,self interested as anyone else but they would not admit it.Liars really.

We now have a hapless PM one who doesnt like criticism or flak;he wants to be loved.Wrong.

We have a smarmy opposition leader who we really have no idea as to how he would have fared any better.

Biggest loss to Labour was John Smith

Biggest loss to Labour was Ruth Davidson sticking to Scottish matters.A wasted talent

Setting dates is absolutely wrong especially months in advance. Nobody really knows what the position will be in June and that includes you and me. As far as Starmer is concerned he needs to learn that he isnt in charge of what happens in Wales. Drakeford is as we have devolution. If we just have politicians doing as the UK party leader says then having devolution is pointless.

As far as extending the lockdown you dont know whether it would have helped and neither do I. The evidence elsewhere in the UK suggests having a longer period didnt work. The cases increased in England after firebreak just as our did and the highest figure in England ended up slightly higher than our peak in Wales although a few weeks later.

You really cannot plan ahead on dates especially more than a few weeks. Any plan should be based on data ie the figures not dates. This is what Johnson has said numerous times but then adds in specific dates.

As an example if things happen as per the Swansea University modelling then we will be in a totally different position in June so setting plans for June and July will prove as wrong and useless as saying the virus was going to be gone and we would be back to normal by December.

Completely get your position. Don't think I can personally bring myself to vote for Plaid given their now open commitment to an Indie Ref if they were to win the elections, but I'd rather they formed a government than the same old gang of labour cronies. At least then, like you said, we might see a government that cares about Wales in its entirety, rather than just the South East.

Unfortunately I think Labour will end up the 'ruling party' again, even if they might end up with fewer seats. We'll then be in the marvellous position of ending up with another FM nobody voted for; Drakeford steps down half-way through his term as intended, and we get Gething in his stead.

Maybe it's the fear of ending up with Gething that drives me towards Plaid. Drakefiord was poor when he was in health, things started going bad under his tenure and continued to decline under Gething.

I asked Rhun Ap Iorwerth a few questions, made my opinions clear, basically asked him to persuade me. I'lll read what he has to say and think on it.

To be honest Price doesn't inspire me but ap Iorwerth seems a better choice, maybe if he were leader?

It's only wrong to set dates if you stick to them regardless of the situation with the virus. Nobody is going to do that and nobody has said they are going to do that.

It is absolutely wrong not to let people and businesses know what is likely to happen when, even over the short term.

Both you and I know if Drakeford had set dates and Boris hadn't, setting dates would be the correct way of doing things in your opinion.

I don't have a problem with the cautious way Drakeford is going about things, even if some of it is random, but a plan to the summer is essential.

I dont honestly know how anybody can tell if a longer firebreak lockdown would have worked. It would certainly have taken figures lower initially but the evidence from elsewhere was that after reopening the figures rocketed in the same way ours did.

The whole idea of the firebreak was to reverse the trend. It did that. What then happened was the figures then rocketed. The exact reason for that I dont know but I suspect that as we moved towards Christmas more people went out and about and that was probably a cause as was the fact as we went into lockdown earlier and came out later than England many came here shopping because shops were closed. It was my main concern over moving out of lockdown and opening shops earlier than England. I suspect tat may well be one of the reasons shops havent now opened.

If you look at the graph under daily figures it shows there was a reduction in figures after the firebreak which was what the intention of a firebreak was. The issue wasnt that the firebreak didnt work. It did what it was meant to. The problem was what happened after the firebreak.

The daily figures shoe that the Wales peak was before Christmas. There were a couple of days after Christmas and in the early New Year where double figures were shown for Christmas and New Years days. Because of this a few days around that period were not accurate.

I dont accept Sturgeon made a mass of things. She has been as good as anyone and the same is true for Drakeford. Both have been far more cautious and made less foolish predictions than Johnson has.

The decision over Christmas rules I criticised at the time along with Drakeford's decision to allow 4 from different household's to sit together in pubs. However his overall handling of the virus has been good. The figures havent gone from 1000 behind England to 70 ahead for no reason and this went on last summer long before the Kent virus was established. and has continued in Feb and March when the Kent virus has been the main strain in Wales.

The reason a longer firebreak would have worked was the same as the reasons I gave for wanting it to be months not weeks. We had seen after the first lockdown that people went berserk and cases shot up. If we'd had lockdown that went past Christmas the figures would have dropped really low, the trend would have meant a much bigger decline and lives would have been saved.
With fewer cases and vaccinations maybe we'd be ina much better situation now. We wouldn't have seen the Christmas crowds in Cardiff or anywhere else. What we also saw then was later on, in December, when another lockdown was announced people went berserk again. It was entirely predictable, indeed I'm sure it was preicted on here.
We always needed a longer term plan.
You were all for tougher measures until now when you say other things in your defence of Drakeford.
Figures in England rocketed because of the more transmissible Kent variant, Scotia has told you that. We locked down on Dec 20th to avoid that variant. Bojo told the devolved governments about it and his plan to lockdown and they rushed out to announce lockdown before him.
You cannot argue that lockdowns work and then say we can't know if a longer lockdown would have worked, they do or they don't. Which is it?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
