When it comes to out and out wingers 22:43 - Apr 24 with 1511 viewsKeithHaynes

What do we have at the club ? Someone to either menace the opposition like Dyer used to, or just come on and change a game, like a montero, etc.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Proper wingers, the touchline hugging mud splattered, socks down crowd favourite. There’s a few in non league. The game has changed a lot, but Nathan was the best. Overall Leighton James for me was superb, in modern times Nathan, followed by Montero, Narsingh, Barrow, don’t forget Paul Anderson, Joey Beauchamp, there are others. But for me Nathan was the very best, a real fans favourite.

If we're going back that far: Don Rogers, Ronnie Rees, Eddie Gray. I think you're struggling with the "modern times" players, TBH. Montero is the nearest to a proper old-fashioned winger, Dyer arguably. Narsingh and Barrow? You're having a laugh.

Going back a bit further we had Brian Evans who could play a bit - traditional tricky touch-line hugger, and glamourpuss Barrie Jones, world record transfer fee for a winger at the time - £45,000 to Plymouth Argyle.

I didn’t say they had to be good 😉

A bit of a fallacy, there is more left and middle of the road than right. Which makes this a democratic balance.

I see you prefer No wingers and a compact midfield ?

On the right wingers, to some of the lefties on here if you;re not left you must be right, you have to be a tory.

On the football, we have nobody in the first team that terrorises the opposition. There isn't anubody that gets us off our seats, is there? It is usually so slow and laboured. The quickest any of our team go is on the team bus, otherwise they're in crawler gear.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

When Montero felt like playing and wasn't injured he was pretty damn awesome, i remember him giving Calum Chambers the biggest nightmare of his life and it was glorious to watch

You knew he'd get a cross in with either foot ,excellent winger. As was Leighton James

He doesn't terrorise the opposition as such but I imagine Lowe could get you off your feet when he does things like outpacing that QPR fullback on the half-way line before putting Routledge away? Routledge messed it up, of course, but that's what Wayne does. Maybe a better example is Lowe's second goal away at Cardiff? You'd have been on your feet, surely?

I think we’ve actually been very unlucky there this season.

While neither are touchline hugging wingers, Gibbs-White had quality and purpose. Looked like he’d have a bit of end product. Morris had pace and power. May not have been as technical, but no defender wants to come up against someone who can match them for pace, then outmuscle them.

I don’t think defenders would have relished facing either of them.

Barrie Jones was on another level from anything we have had as regards winger in recent years.
We've had some great wide men and I can go back to the days of Cliffy and Flicka.

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not
