| Eurovision on 15:37 - May 23 by onehunglow | Try to be a smart @rse with me.Stick to ignoring me. Look at the context of my post and then reflect. Reflect on the volume of contemporary popular that endures . Leaving aside ABBA, not much ,I would suggest. |
I don’t need to try hard to sound smart when speaking to you. You literally described the people who produced Bach, Mozart, Handel and Beethoven as ‘musical nonentities’. And amplified your stance by listing a Russian and several children of German immigrants as reasons why ‘Europeans’ don’t have music that stands the test of time. You mentioned Sinatra - My Way was a French song - Paul Anka (Lebanese family btw) wrote new lyrics. Bert Kaempfert ( German) wrote Strangers in the Night. The best selling pop act at the moment by a mile are BTS, who are Korean and don’t sing in English. Most songs we know have been in English as the US and U.K. have been the biggest markets so they are written for that market. That doesn’t mean that the others are non entities. You seem to think everyone who isn’t you is somehow inferior.
| Eurovision on 16:01 - May 23 with 657 views | onehunglow | Eurovision is contemporary. The great classical composers are not although they were in their day. Opera was the music for the masses. No longer the case. Few hum classical arias apart from Aida . I can go back to dear old Katie Boyle doing the show as she spoke a few foreign languages which impressed the ordinary man . Very few resonating songs in his history until Waterloo came along. It is now a rather kitch show which appeals to the perverse side of us. I guarantee the winning song will be forgotten by next week. And finally, their attempts to look cool are comical | |

You said the Europeans were musical nonentities. Perhaps you are now withdrawing that. The latest now is no Eurovision songs that have stood the test of time before Waterloo’? Congratulations - Cliff in 1968 Lulu in the 60s with Boom Bang a bang Sandie Shaw with Puppet on a String. If you are going to say it’s because they’re all in English, then Italy’s entry in 1958 has done ok - you may know it as ‘Volare ‘.

| Eurovision on 15:26 - May 23 by londonlisa2001 | “The Europeans are awful at writing music that endures“. These ‘musical nonentities’ produced Bach, Handel, Brahms, Beethoven, Mahler etc etc etc from Germany; Mozart, Schubert, Haydn etc etc from Austria; Bizet, Debussy, Ravel, Berlioz etc etc from France; Verdi, Vivaldi, Puccini etc etc etc from Italy; Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Borodin etc etc from Russia. Even the writers of the great American songbook you mention, Irving Berlin, born in Russia, Hammerstein, Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, - all children of European Jewish immigrants. And you describe the Europeans as musical nonentities? The reason we received no points is because our entry was awful. If we sent Adele or Harry Styles we wouldn’t get no points. |
Good point. I thought Beethoven’s 9th in A Clockwork Orange was superb but can’t see it winning Eurovision if I’m honest lol

Ode to Joy could win it as long as it was put to a techno beat with someone dressed up as a milkmaid... The whole thing is always great fun. It makes me laugh that for a week before everyone in this country reckons they’ve no interest and for a week after everyone gets hugely annoyed that we get no points. And the viewing figures here are always huge.

No, just our musical expectations.

The UK is stuck in a time warp where it's arrogance thinks we are better than we really are. That's what you said, maybe it was only a musical judgement but it was about the whole UK.

| Eurovision on 20:05 - May 23 with 507 views | 73__73 | Haven’t watched the freak show for over 20 years. Zero points. I’d put that down to jealousy. A jealousy, that manifests itself with such things as the Eurovision Song Contest, stems from the fact that the British/English people have contributed so much to the world. Or even ask the 39 countries to fund it themselves instead of expecting the BBC to waste licence payers to cover the cost. | |
