| Does anyone else need a manager on 14:18 - Jul 2 by ReslovenSwan1 | Why is it not realistic?. Norwich went close to this style and romped the league. It was realistic for Swansea from 2007 to 2016 9 long seasons. There are literally dozes of europen coaches out of work who promote this style. I hope Cooper can take on coaching help and evolve. He has the like of Routledge, Dyer Britton Tate to give him value added input not learned on FA courses. These guys must have learned a lot under Martinez, Sousa, Brendan and Laudrup. He must know himself he must do it to be a serious managerial option with multimillion pound salary. |
That’s because Norwich have an excellent side, we had a decent first 11 but with severe limitations. In order to play that style you firstly need someone to sit in front of the back the and direct play, Grimes can do it but he is no Leon Britton. We need someone in midfield who can then play the killer pass and penetrate the lines, Norwich had Buendia, we didn’t have anyone that could do that. You need a keeper that can take the pressure of the press and become a sweeper. Woodmans distribution was terrible. Then of course you need the striker that can also become part of the midfield and have a good back to goal game, they had Pukki, we had nobody who could do that. Potter tried to play good football with a side that was far stronger than the one we had last season and we finished 10th. Cooper played to his squads strength and recognised the limitations and we finished 6th and then 4th. If we are to play tiki taka football (which is dying out at all levels by the way), and most importantly, effective tiki taka - then we need a squad capable of it. I don’t believe we do, we have a squad that can play winning football, but not in the style many want. Our strength was our defence, and we had individuals up front who could nick a goal here and there, in Ayew and Lowe. When you have so little investment in players year on year, while the best ones get cherry picked each year, you have to make do with what you have. That’s where we are at the moment. I don't necessarily want "tiki taka" football, just a couple of attempts on goal would be a good start.

We had enough to finish 4th. More attacking football means we sacrifice defence, which was the basis of our success. Sacrificing success for a bit more entertainment isn’t the managers remit because sadly for some he works for the owners not the fans. His remit is to get results. That’s how he felt was the best way to achieve them, considering where we finished its hard to argue he was wrong, especially when the manager previous finished mid table.

Best we leave it there. I want excitement and entertainment you want wins even though we didn't go up and are still in the same division. I'll let you play your silly little game and have the last say while I bow out.

Then go to Oakwood maybe? Their sole purpose it so excite you. The remit of a football owner and management team is to get wins and points, not to excite you if it comes at the sacrifice of those results. It’s nothing to do with what I want or what you want at the end of the day. Football is a results business and has been for the last few decades. The club will do what’s best for the club. Whether you think that’s silly or not, it’s just the way it is. You will just have to live with it because it’s not changing any time soon. [Post edited 2 Jul 2021 15:05]

You said it was unrealisic to play good open possession based football. Its not. Swansea played this style of football throughoiut the 'Jenkinista era'. Martinez had very little resources and neither did Brendan or Sousa. Sousa had to play Keri Morgan and Jazz Richards as teenagers. This football will alway be relevant. This gave Swansea the edge and now it has gone.

No I didn’t. I said it’s unrealistic to be able to play tiki taka football and storm the league with this group. You are comparing a unique period in our club and expecting those standards to be the norm, when in reality they may not ever be matched in our lifetimes again. Having access to Angel Rangel, Ashley Williams, Leon Britton, Nathan Dyer, Joe Allen et al, all approaching their prime, all who had been on a journey together with the club is something very special indeed and not something easily replicated. Those are the richest resources we have had in decades. Again, Potter tried playing decent football with a very strong squad that had the likes of Dan James, Oli McBurnie, Leroy Fer and Joe Rodon in it. £60m+ worth of talent just in those players and we finished in mid table obscurity. | Does anyone else need a manager on 18:59 - Jul 2 with 534 views | Dr_Parnassus | Here is the quote:- “Would I prefer tiki taka Brendan Rodgers style football while storming the league? Absolutely. Do I think it’s realistic? Not at all.” It’s simply about sacrificing results for aesthetic purposes. I wouldn’t. I don’t believe we have that key core of players that we had, that was able to implement such a style effectively. Britton was often like two men, Dyer the same, Rangel the same - we were relentless, game after game. Those players don’t grow on trees. It’s a bit like asking Arsenal to play the same as the invincible era but without Viera, Henry, Pires, Overmars and Bergkamp. Arsene Wenger was the manager that implemented that style, yet when those players left their style had to change simply because you have to adapt to the players you have. He was still the manager after they left...

Nobody is asking for Tika taka . All we want is some attacking intent. A pace of play which we seemed capable of this year but chose not to I genuinely believe a manager with a bit more attacking intent would have finished off the season better. We tried to protect our lead and play defensively and nick a goal for half a season when in reality when we went in the front foot we were decent If he stays which looks likely now I hope he looks back at our best performances and tries to replicate that not the dross we watched for the 2nd half of the season
| This is Patches O'Houlihan saying "Take care of your balls, and they'll take care of you." |

Again, we had enough attacking intent to finish 4th. The previous manager seemed to have a level of attacking intent people like and we finished 10th with a much better team. Attacking intent doesn’t mean better results and isn’t necessarily a positive. I just don’t see the evidence that a team who’s obvious strength was defence (we had no real seasoned striker) would benefit from sacrificing that strength to give the ball more to players that aren’t in their natural attacking positions.
