What motivation did he have to try harder here?

In his first few games it was evident how lazy and disinterested he was. Yet, because he scored a few goals and our gullible supporters cheered him, he was cheered, clapped and praised - why bother trying harder when you're already successfully getting by?

In addition, the manager rarely dropped him despite his woeful attitude on the pitch. It was an easy few months work for Hourihane here.
