Let’s look at that issue logically for a second. Millions are flooding over the border to Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Poland as they are bordering countries. They’re always going to have a lot more refugees than us because they’re immediately next door. If there was a civil war in the Republic of Ireland they’d all spill over into the UK. They wouldn’t be fleeing to Poland or the Czech Republic. It’s a matter of geography. Over time we absolutely should take more, but at the current moment comparing the numbers with those countries directly next door to the atrocities to try and score a cheap political point is highly disingenuous.

Firstly, if the Ukrainians had implemented the Minsk agreements, there probably wouldn’t have been a war. Secondly, if NATO hadn’t of led Ukraine up the garden path with some vague possibility of joining NATO in the future. (NATO have no intention letting Ukraine join and never have) that would have decreased the chances of war dramatically. Thirdly, Russia isn’t going to let the USA etc to put ballistic weapons in Ukraine, just like the USA wasn’t prepared to except Russia placing nuclear weapons in Cuba in the 1960’s.

The Minsk agreement wasn’t worth the paper it was written on. It heavily favoured Russia and was signed largely under duress following russias illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula. History is littered with these treaties signed at the barrel of a gun following a conflict. A good example would be the Treaty of Paris of 1856 where the Russian empire completely denounced any claim over the Crimean peninsula and agreed to a complete demilitarisation of the Black Sea in the aftermath of defeat in the Crimean War. Of course that didn’t last long. The NATO issue as I have said was Ukraines choice. Russia had absolutely no legal or moral right to oppose any choice made by Ukraine. Thirdly why would the US want to place missiles in Ukraine? It’s long been established that Russia and the USA along with the other nuclear powers are more than capable of totally annihilating each other as it is. If the USA wanted to place missiles to threaten Russia they could put them in Latvia or Estonia, two countries who are within driving distance from St Petersburg and Moscow. We aren’t living in the sixties anymore. Honestly what do you think the odds are of the USA attacking Russia? Even now with the horrors the Russian regime are committing the evil warmongering west are demonstrably doing everything they can to prevent escalation. We haven’t fired a single bullet. We never would have fired the first shot. Your arguments are a nonsense and don’t stand up to any scrutiny or logical thought. Whatever the political tension within ukraine, whatever NATO has or hasn’t done and whatever the USA may or may not hypothetically want to do doesn’t matter. It’s irrelevant. Nothing justifies this course of action Putin has embarked upon. Nothing.

What part favours Russia ? Have you read the Mink accords, because I have last month. As for Crimea it was given to the Ukrainians in 1954, 95 % plus of the population class themselves as Russian. Also, it’s not up to Ukraine if they join NATO that’s up to NATO and only a complete madman would even consider Ukraine joining NATO.

The Minsk Agreement failed from day 1. It didn’t stop the fighting, at best it restricted it slightly. If we are to assert such significance to the honourable keeping of international treaties then we should also consider the Geneva convention which Putin and his forces are routinely wiping their arses with on a daily basis. Did you read those treaties? What about the UN charter? The transfer of the Crimean oblast was symbolic. The population are largely Russian because the local population were either killed, forced to flee or shunted into a train and sent to Siberia. And of course it was ukraines choice to apply to join NATO. They’d have to fulfil the entry requirements which they were and are miles away from first but the fact remains that it had absolutely nothing to do with Russia whether they did or not.

It didn’t stop the fighting because Ukrainians carried on killing Russians. Now have you read the Minsk protocol and the revised Minsk 11 ? If not you must be getting your information from MSM, regarding Minsk. You still haven’t said which part of Minsk favours Russia ?

Also it had nothing to do with the USA when Russia wanted to install nuclear weapons in Cuba, but that didn’t stop the Americans from threatening war against Russia. Time for you to come into the real world. Ukraine is being used by the west, because the west really doesn’t give a toss about the Ukraine. A Ukraine in NATO possibility could be the trigger that starts ww3, so preventing ww3 is far more important than what the Ukraine wants.

Maybe you should ask why Ukraine wanted to join the EU and NATO, I’d hazard a guess to say it’s because they wanted some kind of protection from Russia. They’ve seen what’s gone on in places like Georgia and were fearful for their future. [Post edited 21 Mar 2022 19:38]

Precisely. There’s a reason that nearly all the ex Soviet states want very little to do with Russia. NATO isn’t expanding eastwards. The ex Soviet states are fleeing to the west for protection from Russian aggression and threats. Apart from Belarus (puppet state) and a few pockets like that enclave in Moldova the ex Soviet areas of Europe want to get as far away from Russia as humanly possible.

95%, from what I've read it's closer to 60% but even so that is only after they deported the entire indigenous population of Tatars to "Russify" the area. What about the "Pereiaslav Agreement" which the Russians and Cossacks signed. The eventual consequence for the Hetmanate was the dissolution of the Zaporizhian Host in 1775 and the imposition of serfdom in the region, as well as a systematic process of Russification. Ukraine does not belong to Russia, borders have changed all through history. Going by your point of view the Uk should still have it's empire, or at least some of it. Maybe we should force the newer countries back together into their previous entities, Yugoslavia first maybe?

I know why Ukraine wanted to join, that's not the issue. The issue is their desire has (at least in part) led to the Russian invasion. Putin didn't want them in the EU or NATO. That is why I have already suggested the Eastern European countries should form their own bloc. They can have a trading bloc AND be their own defence against Russia by having a NATO style agreement about mutual defence. I doubt if the EU will want those countries that are members to eave and set up their own shop though, they are trying to build their empire and guard it jealously. This war isn't going away unless we find a compromise acceptable to all sides. Even so we don't want to hang Ukraine out to dry, we need to protect them as much as we possibly can.
