Bravo to Non Stanford of Bridgend winning the European Women's triathalon championships. Wales is well represented in this sport. We are actually very good with Helen Jenkins coming 4th in the 2021 Olympics and Leandra Cave world champ like Stanford a decade ago. Another Welsh girl Issy Morris came quite high up too.

In this events certain ethnic groups cannot compete such as Africans andd Asians. A lady from Bermuda has done well and won the Commonwealth games Flora Duffy so may be it is a matter of training facilities.

Also find it fascinating how ethnic groups are better at certain events. Virtually all sprinters are black, most swimmers are white, 800 to maybe 5000m is pretty mixed whilst the Africans dominate the distance events.

Great book Running With the Kenyans talks about their kids running everywhere, to school eg, mostly bare foot and maybe the poorer countries don’t have the access to swimming pool, pole vault, and field events.

I spent a bit of time in Kenya, a school trip came to the hotel, roughly 30 8/9 year olds.

They were laughing their heads of at people jumping in the swimming pool. They found it hilarious. I took a video of their reaction, it was great.

I told the teacher they were more than welcome to jump in too but was told none of them could swim. In fact they weren't allowed in water full stop. They don't have access to pools and the animals / water quality in rivers and lakes could kill them.

We don't know how lucky we are.

Often see the great runners are so humble. These guys marathon times are 1 1/2 hours faster than mine. I’d. be flipping unbearable if I was that fast.

Dame Flora Duffy-Olympic Champion too, is a white Bermudan. It's a bit of a middle/upper class sport which needs the water and a racing bike. Wales are very good at this sport in general.

Partly elevation too. These guys grow up at altitude on the central highland plains-Nairobi is close to 1800m above sea level and Addis Ababa 2300m above sea level.

West Africans specifically John, its not a uniform spread across the continent.

Colin Jackson did a tv show looking at it all 👍

Kenya has a huge doping problem in distance running, they have several Olympic and World champions currently serving bans that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Altitude and running six miles barefoot to school and back every day only takes you so far.

As regards Non, I remember her as a sensational young teenage middle distance prodigy at the top of the UK rankings for a few years while running for Swansea Harriers close on two decades ago. Delighted to see the success she has earned through Triathlon.

Undeniably true, one of the reasons, I’ve switched off a bit from the elite athletics. They need their Tour de France moment for the whole thing to be exposed.
