I haven't followed it that closely, but, my understanding is that Trump had 20+ boxes of official documents in his basement, some of which were top secret. Things like details of new US nuclear missile systems. Not sure how that is defendable if true.

Every President has documents when they leave office. Him having them isn’t the issue, the issue is they are saying he didn’t follow the correct process with the National Archives.
If you punish Trump for such nonsense then you punish probably every President in history, even non Presidents like Hillary.
They are making an issue of it now because they don’t want him to run in 2024. The Democrats are using the DOJ as another arm of political power to try and weaken their opposition.
