| Potter: Open letter to Brighton fans.. on 18:05 - Sep 12 by Catullus | If you want a fantasy, tell us again how the Vetch was rammed full by 7000 fans on August 29th 1981. Well done though, you managed to not mention HJ or the trust, it's an improvement. |
Crowds approaching 10,000 in the Vetch was very uncomfortable in 2001 or so. 24,000 in 1981 was madness even reckless. Hillborough did not have a safety certificate yet held events. I would be amazed if the Vetch had one in 1981. They still took my money and put me at risk. Hillsborough in 1989 did not have a safety certificate because who ever had to sign it off did not agree it was safe. They therefore thought it was unsafe and they were right. Being the UK the establishment they singled out a single policeman for responsibility when in reality there were a chain of errors and bad practices on going at the time all over the country. For this reason the FA had no difficulty in recommending Hillsborough for a semi final despite the fact it had no safety certificate. The fact that no one was killed at the Vetch during the time of hooliganism was pure luck. It took new respected local ownership having a good reputation with the local council to see the end of that potential death trap. I am grateful you are not. Football fans have always been treated like second class citizens. We take what we are given. For that reason I went to Birmingham and paid for a hotel and had no match to watch. Had I gone to Lords to watch cricket I would have seen some action. I recommend no Swansea fans go to the rescheduled match as a protest. [Post edited 12 Sep 2022 19:10]
