Exactly, I think they are a good thing

Serious question but other than you not having to send a meter reading in whats good about them ?

Sorry this has nothing to do with meter reading, just wondering how efficient my central heating is, last night I put it on and I think according to the meter it was taking about 50p an hour? Is that about right?

All I can see is you can switch stuff off and find out what's taking all the energy.

You can get a monthly accurate bill paid by variable direct debit so you never overpay. You can also have an instant electricity and gas usage lets you see which devices use the most power.

Just had my first payment of £66 credited to my bulb account thanks to the UK government'.

The report in today’s Telegraph doesn't make great reading.
The Rough Field gas storage site off the Yorkshire coast won’t be ready for winter and is likely to make a minimal contribution to our energy security this winter as talks about funding drag on - they’ve only been going on for 4- 5 months!!!! The site closed in 2017 after the government refused to make funds available to Centrica to maintain the site - piece of critical national infrastructure. At full capacity Rough could hold enough gas for 10 days winter use and accounted for 70% of our storage.
We’ve been exporting our North Sea gas to Europe through out the summer because we didn’t have any storage facilities, now we face the prospect of going cap in hand to our European neighbours who’s storage tanks are nearly full or trying to source gas what supplies there are on the open market! On top of that, the government failed to ask EDF early enough to extend the power generation at Hinckley B, an early request would have enabled EDF to do the safety checks and secure a licence to continue operating but it never happened and our electricity supply is now under threat.

I suspect the reason Liz Truss doesn’t want a public information campaign about saving energy isn’t because it will turn us in to a nanny state, it’s because it will be used to reminder her she promised the lights would stay on this winter.

12 years of mis management has taken this once great country to the pinnacle of despair , no policy on energy other than just a flat rate no on expanding the renewable sector ,we produce well over 50% of our own gas supply yet no joined up thinking on how to store the excess .We have been through tough times before but I can’t remember ever seeing the country as it is now.

The renewable energy sector has expanded vastly in the last 12 year.

In 2010 only 6% of UK electricity generation came from renewables.
In quarter 2 2022 38.6% of UK electricity generation came from renewable.

At the beginning of 2022 1 million UK households had solar panels most new system in the last two years now include batteries to store electricity for night usage.

In 2010 virtually no UK households had solar panels.
Currently 3 month waiting list to supply new solar system due to high demand, worldwide inverter shortages.

A pretty good record on providing new green renewable energy with plenty more new sites under construction both off shore and on shore. Would have been a lot quicker without our tortuous slow planning process and small protest groups trying yo block progress.

We have even started building new nuclear power stations with the first one due on steam in 2025.

No doubt you have done your bit and installed solar panels.

You’re right, the increase in renewable energy is a really positive development and I believe solar should be compulsory in all most new builds.

It’s a pity that the feed in tariffs and export tariffs have been cut back so severely over the last 12 years, had they not been we could be in a better position than we are now.

The government needs to get a grip on and prioritise work on the National Grid infrastructure, there are quite a few projects in the pipeline that could be progressed quickly if we had the capability of connecting them to the grid. I’m not saying renewables are the answer to all our issues because they aren’t, but they can certainly make a big difference and reduce our dependence on gas and oil from OPEC countries and make us more energy self sufficient. If we can ramp up our electricity production, make it cheaper more people will buy electric cars and countries like Saudi and Russia will no longer be able to hold us to ransom.

Hinckley C is delayed and won’t go on line until 2027 at the earliest.

We'd have been far better off pumping the money spent on HS2 into electrical infrastructure.

As things stand there's not a chance in hell that we'll be in a position to stop the sale of new diesel/petrol vehicles in 2030. We just won't have the generational capacity.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The FIT being paid back in 2010 have now risen to over 60p per KW clearly more than the cost any electricity currently being generated. The cost are added to the green levy added to everyones electricity bills. It is madness an unaffordable to pay far more in subsidies than it cost to generate electricity.
The FIT were reformed to more accurately reflect the cost of generating electricity from new solar systems. Currently most electricity companies pay around 5p per Kw but these are changing.
Octopus currently pay between 13p and 33p per Kw on their variably FIT depending on time of day. This requires no subsidy from the government at all and a new solar system with batteries will cover its costs within 5 years. Even shorter if electricity prices remain high.

Even in 2030 it is likely that over 80% of vehicles on UK roads will be non electric. Currently around 1% of vehicles are EV. around 10% of new sales are EV though this is likely to increase as we near 2030.

Their is also a tendency for EV owners to install their own solar panels so they don't have to rely on electricity for 90% of their needs.

I would not like to predict what may or may not happen by 2030

and yet in 2020 the government missed its renewable energy targets with the Energy and Climate Change Committee Chair Angus MacNeil MP stating:

r the UK will miss its 2020 renewable energy targets without major policy improvements. Failing to meet these would damage the UK's reputation for climate change leadership. The Government must take urgent action on heat and transport to renew its efforts on decarbonisation."

and this year https://blog.policy.manchester
So yes there's been an improvement but its not quite a rosy as you make out

and yes thanks for asking, I have solar panels fitted to my roof which have been there since 2014 , yourself ?

Yes two systems, the first installed in 2010 and the second in February 2021 which has batteries. Enough to provide 95% of my electricity needs, plus heat my water with my immersion heater, power my electric car and still return 2.5 MW per year to the national grid.

You are correct there was a slow down in providing renewable energy partly due to Covoid and a shortage of solar panels and inverters from China which are still in short supply.

Electricity from wind farms still increasing with the three new sites in the North Sea. Construction started in July. Dogger Bank A B and C. Each will be larger than Hornsea 2 , the world's largest windfarm, which became operational in September.

1. Is there a cost of running solar panels once installed?
2. We had to have solar panels on our new build. Had our first year re-payment in July. £32 for 12 months. Seems absolutely pointless having them.

Not had any problem in the 12 years I have had them. The inverter is the only part of the system that might fail.

£32 seems very low.
Do you know what the annual output is?
What is rayed output of your system?

How much electricity you have saved or how much you have exported?

Solar panels seem to be a mystery, people who have them here don’t speak that highly of them either. Although those who have fitted them independently do.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

I have them fitted but not at my cost , I rent the roof space out and the company have the feed in tariff and I the free electric generated so it has helped to keep our bills down

The company who rent your roof space clearly make a profit.

If they have given you a device to see your actual real time try using your home appliances when it is sunny and output is high. If you have an immersion heater try to switch on when sunny and save gas by not using your gas boiler.
