What if Martin signed a new two year contract in March. What would be the difference? I personally did not recommend it back then, few did.

Not a lot of difference I suggest. Just another £1m or £2m in the bank in compensation. This is being used as another stick to bash the owners. Martin leaving is not the issue. Who is replacing him is the issue. If he has the same philosophy he has a ready made squad starting to get more consistent. Swansea can put a gentlemen's agreement for SFC not to raid the club.

Martin wants to leave Swansea like Manning does. It is business life.

Patience works two ways.
He has been patient with those above him who made some strange decisions during the transfer windows
Many managers would have walked then

The only transfer window deemed "strange" makes perfect sense in retrospect if you consider the doubts in the minds of those in charge about Martin.

Giving him more money to spend when he was in "process" mode would have been money utterly pissed away. It's only since the end of March he's resembled a remotely competent manager, and that was probably too little, too late.

When you consider that then keeping what limited funds we do have for whoever replaces him makes perfect sense.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

What if he got a couple of players in January.

We will never know but I guess you and fellow Martin haters will try and spin it to say he still would have failed to get us into the play offs.

And btw I am a jack b@stard not a Martin lover.

Not many managers walk full stop. The only one I can think of is Kenny Jackett.

Winter Marsh and Martin made proposal the owners did not like. it was stated there was money to spend but the proposals were not considered good enough. All three are lively to be working elsewhere.

Levien fronted up and apologised to the fans and now appear to be making changes including having i a US man in town to stream line decision making.

We can keep pretending that all we needed was a couple of players in January and not the large scale abandonment of Plan A if you like.

If he'd got the players he wanted, why would he change his plan?

He didn't want to do that. Every time he moved away from it it was either forced on him through injuries or results. Every time the pressure eased he switched right back. He couldn't help himself. Hell, the last game of the season, the first game with nothing on it saw the reappearance of the goal kick routine. It's ingrained in him.

For this entire season we've had a squad of players good enough to finish top six. Obviously. The results gained when not following "The Process" more than speak for themselves in this regard. The January window is a smoke screen. An excuse used to blame others for his own mistakes (not that they're undeserving of criticism for theirs).

I genuinely think his personal health was badly affected by it. I’m uncertain if that’s sulking though.

No, I don’t think Martin worded it as “sulking”.
The amount of work it seems like Martin and his team put in, whether it was working or not, seemed to me to be a great deal, going by what he, the staff and players said. Not getting support for those people hurt him. And definitely affected him.
He was honest about that, as he was with everything I believe. I was actually quite proud to have a manager of my club, who all his players loved working with, the staff all happy, the atmosphere around the place all relaxed and positive(even when losing loads).

It was slow going, I admit, but we were slowly improving and that’s all that matters to me.
A small improvement year on year, with a back room and facilities full of people living what they do. Helping each other and being great humans to each other.
There aren’t many clubs like that. Not only getting paid to play football, but learning about life and improving on the pitch and as a person.

All that, whilst moving slowly up the league and back to the prem.

That would have been perfect.
I do think Martin and the rest of them could have done it if they’d been supported.

While football is not the most important job in the world it can be stressful. I am not one to conflate being sad, unhappy and miserable with mental health. If had a strong philosophy and it was not working I would be angry, frustrated and miserable. Martin likes big transfer windows and this was a potential quick fix and an escape from his problems getting results.

Sheffield united singed no one. No drama there. Martin made a big issue of the fact they signed nobody. I interpreted that Levien and Silverstein were not impressed with the proposals made to them. Marsh and Winter will leave on account of this perhaps.

Hegginbottom did not lose focus. Martin found a way and the right way he figured out on his own. This occurred while being put under pressure and after a period of reflection. He was not let down in any way. This refocusing has surprisingly earned him a big pay day nearer his home on the south coast. he is attracted by the money and his contract makes absolutely no difference in my opinion.

Yes but did sheff Utd need players as desperately as us?

There are many factors that concluded us not getting in playoffs.

Sure I read that we lost the most points after 90 mins in the league. Think it was 10 points lost.
If we had managed to close out them games, we would have been 4th.

Now can we blame the manager for those crazy goals we conceded in injury time?
If not, then Martin should have finished 4th and the inidividial mistakes by the players cost us.

Im not saying I agree with my point, but just a thought.

I do think Martin will go with his way at Southampton and we will then see if it works with better players.

The two unbeaten runs in both the first and second halves of the season showed what our squad could do if players were setup right and didn't play stupid predictable footbal, l you could even say we had so many "games of two halves" which were defined by kamikaze football at the start of each of the halves sometimes compounded with the merry go round of stupid substitutions and position changes.

Maybe a lot of teams suffered with the freedom of on mass substitutions to keep players happy instead of fine tuning a team where players are carrying a knock or are fatigued given the role they play or injury history.

If the team is winning most players have to accept it might be hard to get consistent game time and may only be used as impact subs, if a team is not winning then maybe players may feel justified to have a strop being on the bench.

As for a manager being offered an extended two year contract because Martin's teams had been so inconsistent I would not have the confidence to offered him an extension with the risk of having to pay a substantial amount of compensation if we went on another losing streak and a sacking seemed inevitable, which was why with a year left on his contract I would have been happy for him to prove himself as a manager capable of gaining a promotion with results in the early part of next season having the confidence to build a team admittedly under the financial constraints that the club has had to work under.

Martin is looking after number one taking the easy way out, if he had the belief in his ability as a manager he would have had the confidence to fine tweaked his young the team for a good start to the season, did he have that confidence no because if the team had a bad start his stock would be considerable lower almost unemployable, presumably got out while he could.
Where are all the Premiership teams knocking on his door.

Is the team in a better position than when Cooper left maybe only from a position of a young team which the next manager can build on.

Look up how many goals we conceded in the 90th minute after March 14th and you will find your answer.

Martin loved blaming individual mistakes when his own system was largely at fault. Set the defence up right, play players in their proper positions, stop insisting on suicide football and those mistakes are almost entirely absent.

You forgot to mention idiotic intial substitutions that meant he changed three or four players positions only for him to five minutes later make the substitutions he should have made in the first place and swap everyone back to their original positions. To be fair the fact he changed it again meant he had realised his mistake but usually too late.
Trial-and-error, heavy weighting on the error and not learning what the trial had shown him.
Perhaps his time with us will improve his ability to adapt his methods but not too sure about that.

I was tempted to mention the Birmingham game especially. 3-2 up and comfortable, he takes off Piroe, Cullen and Ntcham and we end up losing 4-3.

No doubt "individual mistakes" were blamed there too.

Thought it was going that way against PNE but to be fair first lot of substitutions didn't work with Ntcham being asked to cover Mannings runs but second subs left Ntcham further up the park in the middle allowing us to still have a viable threat up front, happy to defend a lead towards the end of a game but you still need a someone up top to take advantage of teams pushing forward and leaving space, pace in the team helps

Ogbene and Key are two players mentioned in the press. They were available for £1.5m-2m combined perhaps.

In earlier discussion Swnsea were pushing for Play offs and the £1.5m -2m might have been worth it. Slumbering stale performances in bottom half of the table made them a no go investment. Coming 8th is of little benefit. Swansea were well out of the play off picture.
Martin wanted the club to spend. Both players are now free transfers but will require high wages.

Martin did not need players. He need a 'word in his ear' to buck up his ideas.
