Those were the days when there was no famous for being famous instantaneous fame, a case of fame earned based upon starting at the very bottom like what many acts used to do by playing in places that were the total opposite of glamourous and spacious. I think modern undiscovered musical acts are disadvantaged nowadays because of the fact record companies and their talent spotting A+R dept(s) are in no way as keen, in number and conspicuous as what they once were, along with the lack of live music venues. And too right it's now more a case of picking someone off a TV talent show assembly line to have a decent chance of making it. There is no longer the individuality, excitement and genre/fashion movement craze etc like years back either i.e. rock n roll teddy boy to Beatlemania, to Merseybeat to Mods to SKA movement to Heavy Metal to Country-Rock to Glam Rock to Punk Rock to New Romantic to synth pop etc.

We indeed very were lucky. I think the internet means that people are far more likely to listen to 'free' music instead, that has taken away the commercial viability for record companies to talent spot and sign people up. It's harder even for long established bands who play smallish to medium sized venues to make money also. I watched Captain Sensible say in an interview say that the majority of the money that his band now makes comes from merchandising (T-shirts etc) at venues. Record royalties and venue ticket sales revenue falls way behind in this day and age. Those were the bygone days when getting on Top Of The Pops and having a few hundred thousand sales would get someone into the Top 10. You can in these days only sell a few thousand and still get to Number 1.

Yes indeed! I never knew his life story until you posted that up. He belonged to a generation that made the best talk show guests ever!!!! How can anyone with intelligence and with an inquisitive need to be stimulated, informed and moved on an emotional level ever have any interest in the made up "woe me" traumas come press agent and managerial scripts you'd get from a typical 'Love Island' contestant. No comparison whatsoever!
